BIOGRAPHY

Born in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) in Mozambique in 1934, was educated in the Liceu Nacional in Mozambique, and at the London School of Economics, University of London (B. Sc. (Econ.) 1957), graduate work under the supervision of Ernest Gellner, 1957-59..

Held appointments at the Universities of Leeds (1959-64) and Essex (1964-71), where I was one of the founders of the Department of Sociology and of the School of Comparative Studies, and at the University of Oxford (St. Antony’s College), 1971-2001.

Visiting appointments at Harvard University (1966-67) and the University of Pennsylvania (1967-1968), and for shorter periods at various universities in Brazil (UNICAMP, UNESP-Marilia) and Portugal (Coimbra).

Elected Emeritus Fellow of St Antony’s College on reaching the compulsory age of academic retirement in the University of Oxford in 2001.

Investigador Coordenador (Senior Research Fellow), Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, 2000-2005, and since then Investigador Honorário of the Insitute.
