Ticket prices for Heritage Walks
£5 for adults£3 for over-60sFree for accompanied children under 16
These walks look at specific locations and their history and heritage. Most walks are offered on a ‘just turn up’ basis unless otherwise stated. If tours are marked ‘Booking essential’ you will need to book your tickets online at newcastlecityguides.org.uk
All walks, visits and events last no more than two hours unless otherwise stated and are non-smoking.
Newcastle and its surroundings have some steep slopes, steps and uneven surfaces. Where walk routes encounter these, it is noted in the walk description.
Season tickets
£35 for adults£30 for over-60s
Buy from newcastlecityguides.org.uk or in person at Newcastle Castle. Season tickets are valid for all walking tours, excluding Winter Warmers, Grey’s Monument and performances.
Season tickets are non-transferable and must be presented at the beginning of each tour, or the standard price will apply.
Performances
Occasionally we deliver performances that take place in the Guildhall on the Quayside. These will be promoted through our website, the NewcastleCityGuides Facebook page and @NewcastleGuides on Twitter, and will be bookable via our website.Booking is essential.
Tickets cost £5 and include the performance and a tour of the Guildhall.
Grey’s Monument tours
Tours of this iconic monument are available on select dates throughout the year.
Tickets cost £5.Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.Under-5s are not permitted.
Public transport
All our walks and performances start and finish close to Metro stations or bus routes.Tour start and end points are included in the tour description.

Newcastle City Guides are a group of trained and qualified volunteers working in association with NewcastleGateshead Initiative, and our 2019 programme of 57 Heritage Walks will take you exploring Newcastle, Gateshead and parts of North and South Tyneside, uncovering the fascinating history and hidden stories of the area.

This walk includes a steep downward slope to the Quayside, so guests with wheelchairs or limited mobility may prefer to finish the tour at Newcastle Castle. Please discuss this with the guide before the tour starts.

AprilWonderful Women of NewcastleSunday 7 April | 2.30pmMeet at the Haymarket Metro Northumberland Street entrance (opposite South African War Memorial). Finish at St Nicholas Cathedral.Our first walk of the season is a celebration of women’s strength in the face of adversity. Throughout history women have been held back from making their mark, often denied an education and career opportunities. This tour visits places associated with some of the wonderful women who have graced Newcastle and played their part in its history. Some were intellectuals, some were pioneers and all have a fascinating story to tell.
Keep Your Feet Still Geordie HinnyWednesday 10 April | 2.30pmMeet at the Chinese Arch, Stowell Street. Finish at the Central Station.Music hall was one of the most popular forms of affordable entertainment in the Victorian period. Take a look at the places where the most popular stars of the time, including Joe Wilson, Geordie Ridley and Ned Corvan, played to packed houses and wowed people with their songs of local events and characters.
Black and White FriarsSunday 14 April | 2.30pmMeet at the Castle Keep. Finish at Blackfriars.Explore the intriguing mixture that is Newcastle: the medieval Castle, and religious houses, 18th century fashionable houses and buildings for the town’s élite, and our fine 19th century railway station, and prestigious commercial buildings. There are even mentions of the Roman presence.This walk includes some steep steps.
Central Station and Boiler ShopWednesday 17 April | 2.30pmMeet at Cardinal Hume’s statue, opposite the Central Station. Finish at Boiler Shop, Stephenson Works.This walk takes a circular route in and around the magnificent Grade I Central Station with access to the world’s first locomotive works. The emphasis is on George and Robert Stephenson’s contributions and the latest developments around the historic Stephenson Quarter.
Dickensian NewcastleSunday 21 April | 2.30pmMeet at the Royal Station Hotel. Finish at Alderman Fenwick’s House, Pilgrim Street.What did Charles Dickens think of Newcastle? Find out on this literary tour and explore where his theatre group performed, where he carried out his celebrated readings and what he would have seen on his visits.
In Sickness and in HealthWednesday 24 April | 2.30pmMeet at the Castle Keep. Finish at the corner of St Thomas Street and Percy Street.This walk looks at the medical history of Newcastle. Old hospitals for the poor, the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Doctor Gibb, “Dirty Dick’s” and Lucozade are just some of the medical topics you will hear about on this fascinating tour.
South Shields – Sailors and Smugglers Sunday 28 April | 2.30pmMeet and finish at South Shields Metro Station (King Street entrance).In a town renowned for its rich maritime history, this South Shields walk travels along the riverside looking at relics of its industrial past. As a busy port, it was home to sailors, press-gangs and smugglers. Look our famous smuggler in the eye! There are steps down, but an alternative route is available if needed.

Please wear suitable footwear as some areas of the cemetery are overgrown and can be slippery, especially in wet weather, and the ground is uneven in places.
North Shields QuaysideSunday 12 May | 2.30pmMeet at North Shields Metro Station. Finish at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre.See where industry and fishing once thrived. Gateshead Grand and GrimSunday 19 May | 2.30pmMeet at Gateshead Old Town Hall, West Street. Finish at Trinity Square. In this circular walk we look at the town centre old and new. Gateshead was a Victorian boom town and, by the time the town hall was built, had become a town of great contrasts, where civic pride vied with slum dwellings. If you lived in central Gateshead, no matter in how fine a house, slums were less than half a mile away.
John Wesley’s NewcastleWednesday 22 May | 7.00pm Meet outside Newcastle Library, Princess Square, Newcastle. Finish at Wesley Obelisk, Wesley Square, Quayside.John Wesley visited Newcastle many times in the latter half of the 18th century. This walk takes us through parts of the town he would have known, with reminders of buildings with which he was associated, some of which are still standing, others long gone.There are stairs down but an alternative is available if needed.

Finish on Dunston Staithes.A unique walk exploring the history of Dunston Staithes and the industry that would have been visible from them on both banks of the Tyne. The walk will take us onto the actual Staithes, one of Europe’s largest timber structures.Steep steps onto the Staithes – an alternative ramp will be open.

This walk examines the roles played by Newcastle Abolitionists including Earl Grey who, as the Prime Minister from the region, in 1833 abolished slavery in the British colonies. The walk also focuses on those from the region who benefited financially from the slave trade.

Finish at St Thomas’ Church, Haymarket.From the site of the Chapel of St. Thomas on the medieval bridge to its early Victorian replacement at Barras Bridge, this walk visits several sites of religious significance.
