Soak Up Some Vitamin D this Summer

Sunlight is the most important source of vitamin D for most people – and August in Wisconsin means plenty of sun and, therefore, plenty of this mood-boosting vitamin. We actually require more vitamin D as we age and those over 50 are at an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency. This holds especially true for women. The most well-known benefit of vitamin D is its ability to maintain strong bone through its regulation of calcium. But it

also helps reduce the risk of flu and diabetes, while also regulating mood and helping fight off depression. We can get some vitamin D through foods – like salmon, tuna, cheese and egg yolks – as well as vitamin D-fortified foods like milk, cereal and juice. But the most important source is still sunlight. So take it as an excuse to get outdoors this month and embrace the nice weather (while it lasts!). Take a walk outdoors, sip some lemonade

on the patio or take your card game outside. (Remember to wear proper clothing and sunscreen and to stay hydrated!)

August is prime growing season for much of America, which means there are some great fruits and vegetables hitting market shelves and family tables this month. Blueberries, raspberries, melons and stone fruits like peaches and nectarines are particularly good this month. For vegetables, beans, cabbage, peppers, tomatoes and squash are all in season.

It’s Prime Time for Seasonal Produce

In-season produce not only tastes better, but it also retains more nutrients because the produce is allowed to ripen before being picked. It’s also cheaper, meaning you save money while eating better! Buying local – through farmers markets and produce stalls – is a great way to ensure that you’re getting the freshest in-season produce, while also supporting local farmers and businesses. Many also offer organic and sustainable

options. So take the opportunity to grab some tasty (and healthy) ingredients for your summer meals!
