You Ought To Know...The last time the Hereford breed has had this much upside potential and opportunity dates back to the late 70’s. What is producing this upside? Well it is not our association or staff that are causing it; surely not the sale managers, auctioneers, agents and consultants and in the most part, nor a large part of the breeders as the population ebbs. No doubt the Hereford has grown into a competitive, new and improved product that on common ground stands up to all other breeds and that credit can only go to the core of breeders who have persevered through the years a lesser market share, economic setbacks and animal disease. The demand for more Hereford is coming from the outside, inward from other nations and commercial producers whose families for several years have used other breeds.

Although this outside movement will reap rewards for those with available inventory, we have already seen a shortage of young breeding age females in the system, as the exporters have done a credible job moving females out of the country to Eastern European markets. If the export market continues, the dealers will have a difficult challenge finding a supply of females at a reasonable value.

The fall run of sales was above expectations and this strong, steady commercial market will ensure strength for the next upcoming quarters. Although a stronger market is responsible, the audiences for the shows and alleys at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina and the National Western Stock Show in Denver were the largest ever and the largest of any other breed. This significance relates that there are those from other breeds looking at the Hereford opportunity; a scenario which has not occurred for quite a long time. The foremost change is a result of the Hereford junior movement as graduates of the junior program are now becoming the leading breeders in our industry.

The commercial sector needs Hereford to supply baldies (black, red or tan); the most popular calf to market… as a stocker, grasser, bred yearling or producing cow. Breeders in other breeds selling bulls hope that their customers have some Hereford base in their herds to achieve maxim results from their bulls whether they are Angus, Charolais or Simmental. More and more Hereford bulls are required to be used on the solid colored cows to add bone, hair, conversion and hybrid vigor.

Since change is continual, change in the livestock industry in North America during the past eighteen months has been a welcomed transformation. The future of the cattle business is laden with opportunities but we have already seen a demographic change. After “feels like a hundred years” era with BSE, many of the older experienced producers have dispersed their herds, especially those with smaller programs. Higher grain prices have also forced decisions of change. In areas of higher urban populations, asphalt, concrete and escalating land values are taking the fun out of cows and in some areas replaced by horses as a lower maintenance hobby.

Herefords Today Winter 2012 18

Page 21: Herefords Today

As the livestock industry goes into its restocking years, many factors will change. Existing cow herds will become larger and run by fewer personnel. The age of the producer will become younger with a new and improved knowledge of operation, limiting risk. There will be less purebred seed stock producers and sadly to say, there will be fewer breeds of cattle, simply because breeds that have a lesser base will not be able to afford or maintain the technology required for the new breed of stockmen.

A very successful breeder from a neighboring northern state related to me in Denver, “The beef business begins the day they are born,” therefore sire selection for heritable traits will be crucial for success. He related that in half the cases, Hereford bulls are being used on heifers, hence calving ease is a critical factor. Numbers and data (whether we like it or not) will become more important as operations get larger and more advanced. We must remember that to get accurate numbers, we must report all our data or we are only kidding ourselves and the customers.

This inward movement will be experienced all spring through bull sales and opened to the world in July. Plan to be a part of the World Hereford Conference, the World Show and the sale. Mostimportantly, get your product ready because the competition will. It is time to put our best foot forward… Canada is the source of the best Herefords… let’s show the world.

These are fun times, enjoy them. In a rising market, do not sell yourself short pricing your product too low because you are judged by price and quality. Our spring issue of Hereford’s Today will be a special World Conference issue, plan to be a part of it and show your program to the world. For those who believe in our future, this is your special invitation to be a part of the T Bar Invitational, June 19-20th at Dakota Dunes.

The Genetics You Need! For The Cattle You Want! Sheldon & Shannon Archibald and their five children carry on the traditions of both the Trefiak and Archibald families with commercial black baldies and purebred horned and polled Hereford cattle available for sale. The Archibald homestead at Irma, Alberta, Est. 1919, when Sheldon’s grandparents settled on the same location where they reside today.

The Trefiak Herefords began in 1945 with Mike and Barbara, when they established a strong herd with many high selling, prize winning, champion bulls and excellent maternal mothers. Sheldon and Shannon (daughter of Bob Trefiak) Archibald are honoured to have the opportunity to purchase this strong line of well bred animals, which has been influenced through some of the top Embryos and AI sires in the world. Our exceptional purebreds crossed with out Angus commercial cattle have produced some over the top Black Baldie Bulls, with strong backs, thick frames and good disposition.

We are excited and enthusiastic about the genetics we have to offer. Jay Berry of Berry Herefords, Wyoming says GAH 230U is one of the greatest bulls he has owned in many years. Make us a part of your future genetic plan. The Archibald family would be pleased to have you as a visitor and friend.

Bear’s Corner By Doreen Flewelling The longer I’m associated with the beef industry and the older I get, the luckier I feel to have had the opportunity to meet so many interesting and intelligent women. Often the unsung heroes of our industry are the women, and in this column I hope to share some of their lives with you. They form a diverse and devoted group who can proudly claim the titles of wife, mother, career women and then often become secretary, bookkeeper, farmhand, entertainment co-ordinator and shrewd business partner as well.

Valerie (Mamchur) Lees of Blair-Athol Polled Herefords was raised in a traditional family where work came first and extra-curricular activities were well earned pleasures. Val describes herself as the “middle child” born to Alex and Callie Mamchur. She has an older brother, a younger sister and brother as well as two older half sisters from her mother ’s first marriage. Val’s father, Alex Mamchur, was born in a part of the Ukraine that was then occupied by Russia, and he arrived in Canada as a Russian immigrant. He could speak Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, and English, but because he couldn’t read or write in English, he was considered illiterate. In the Ukraine, Val’s grandfather Mamchur had a gristmill and grew wheat, oats and barley. He also had a fruit orchard producing both hard and soft fruit. Long before pesticides were used, the Mamchurs would boil rhubarb leaves and spray the juice on the hard fruit trees, such as apples, to control insects. In turn, they sprayed the soft fruit trees, such as pears, with soapy water as an organic pesticide.

It was the “push factor” that forced the Mamchur family to leave the Ukraine. When the Russian government expected all of the able bodied young men to defend Russia over a land dispute with Poland, Val’s grandfather was sure this war would be sudden death for his two sons, Val’s uncle and her father Alex. At the same time, the Russian government was raising funds for the war effort, so they decided to tax the out buildings on farms. They taxed barns, grain bins, storage sheds and even outhouses. A double-hole outhouse was taxed more than a single-hole outhouse. Val’s grandfather felt the Russian government was just asking too much. They wanted his sons and his money! Val’s great uncle had already immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba and they had received two letters from him that emphasized his excitement about settling in Canada. The Mamchur family walked away from their farm with what they could carry and eventually set sail for Canada. They landed in Canada in the 1920’s, and with the help of Val’s great uncle, they were directed to Saskatchewan. At the time, homestead land was still available in Saskatchewan so they settled into an English community near Parkside. The first thing Grandfather Mamchur did was use his two sons to pull the plough to get a potato crop planted. An English neighbour stopped by when he saw the Mamchurs spreading manure on the field. He was adamant when he told them that manure was to be piled and not to be spread on the land. He insisted that they would never get a crop of potatoes! Grandfather Mamchur spent a worrisome summer checking under the plants for potatoes. He thought perhaps the English knew what they were talking about! As it turned out, they harvested a bumper crop of potatoes their first fall in Saskatchewan!

Callie (Wilkinson) Mamchur ’s family (Val’s mother) came to Saskatchewan via the United States. Val’s grandmother was born in West Virginia, married and moved to Oklahoma to take part in the Land Rush. We don’t know whether they acquired land in Oklahoma, but they eventually made their way to Northern Saskatchewan. Val describes her mother ’s father as a ne’er-do-well, because the way the story goes is that he sold moonshine, and one day he just disappeared… rumours were that he was killed by Indians. Val’s grandmother raised her seven children alone!

When Alex and Callie Mamchur married, Alex was a Section Foreman for the railroad, so they moved around Saskatchewan somewhat, but their second child, Val, was born in a community north of Prince Albert called Big River. For grades eight through twelve Val attended the “Sisters of the Presentation of Mary” girls’ boarding school as a day student in the French community of Debden.

Traditions Matter

Val’s Family 1985

It was during those years that Val was introduced to the rewards of knowledge. “My convent education was definitely a positive experience,” Val tells me. “The nuns set excellent examples for the girls, and they encouraged us to further our education.” One nun in particular will always stand out as Val’s mentor. Sister Saint Paul taught Grade 12 English Literature and Social History, and she told Val she was too bright to waste her mind, and that she should find a way to attend university. Being raised by a traditional father with an old fashioned Eastern European way of thinking, Alex Mamchur didn’t feel it was necessary for his daughter to waste time and money on a university education. He felt that girls should concentrate on attaining a home and family. When Val graduated Grade 12 at the age of 16, she was only one of three girls in her class to continue her education. Sister Saint Paul even offered to sign the loan papers so she could attend university. Val declined, but she will always appreciate the confidence the nun showed in her. “Sister Saint Paul was such a progressive teacher for her time,” Val recalls. “She turned our minds on to history with pictures and slide shows of world events such as the liberation of the concentration camps. I remember the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Sister Saint Paul brought a television into the classroom for the students to watch. She was recognized as such a phenomenal teacher that I heard later she was promoted within her faith. She was summoned to Rome as a Canadian advisor to the Pope.”

Immediately after High School graduation, Val enrolled into Summer School at the University of Saskatchewan, then into fall classes the same year. She earned her Temporary Teaching Certificate the following spring and, at the age of 18, took a summer job managing the Big River Café from April 15 until September 1. On September 2, she started her first full-time position in Leask, teaching Grade seven, eight and nine Art for one year. The next fall she returned to the University of Saskatchewan for a second year to earn her Permanent Teaching Certificate. During this time, Val’s parents, Alex and Callie, were running a restaurant in Debden called Mom’s Cafe. Val worked her way through university on student loans and by working in the restaurant on weekends. Alex gave Val his old car so she could make the 90 mile trip home from Saskatoon on the weekends. Now with her Permanent Teaching Certificate, Val was offered four teaching posts in Saskatchewan: two in the north and two in the south. “I narrowed it down to two locations,” she tells me. “The first one was at Wood Mountain in the southwest. During my telephone interview I asked them if they had an ice arena and hockey teams. They didn’t, so I declined. I had always been expected to work hard at home and in the restaurant, but we were also rewarded in our free time. My parents owned a cottage at a nearby lake and we sailed, boated, fished and swam during the summer. I shot gophers with the boys, played baseball and golf and rode horses with friends, square danced with my parents and sang in the Glee Club. Our club sang in French at the opening of the Legislature in Regina one year. When the men were overseas in the war, my Mom coached boys’ hockey, and she was also an avid curler. My favourite curling position was as the Skip, and when I was on the ice, Mom would sit behind the glass and score every rock. When she got the chance, she would show me where I could have done better. Don’t get so worked up, I’d tell her; we’ll win! However, my favourite winter sport to play was hockey. That is why it was so important to me to teach in an area that had an ice arena.” “My second interview was for a position teaching Grade 10 in Arcola,” Val continues. “I met with the School Superintendent while he was in Saskatoon on business. Arcola had an ice arena and hockey teams. I accepted the position, and I heard much later that the Superintendent returned to Arcola and told the Chairman of the School Board, Tom Lees, soon to be my father-in-law, that he had just hired a really neat girl to teach Grade 10!”

In September of 1970, Val moved to Arcola and rented a room with Tom Lees’ hired man and his wife. Her first extra-curricular assignment was to chaperone a school dance on Friday, September 18th. One of the students in her Grade 10 class, Chris Lees, brought his older brother, Duncan, to the dance to introduce him to the new teacher. Chris told Duncan this new teacher must be wealthy because she owned her own car! That night Duncan offered to drive Val home… half a block! He didn’t miss the opportunity to make a coffee date with Val for Sunday night, but as it turned out, he stood her up. Duncan’s father, Tom, insisted that combining was much more important! “My parents weren’t farmers so I didn’t understand the importance of harvest,” Val chuckles. “I wasn’t sure exactly what farming entailed.” The following weekend Duncan invited Val to the movies, and on December 19th that same year, they were engaged.

Unbeknownst to Val, she was entering into a new adventure. It would be a world where a winter holiday is always on hold because of calving season, where supper is at 10:00 p.m. because a cow is calving, and harvest comes before anything else. You run on Mother Nature’s time. Val had just been introduced to a family with traditions of their own. The Lees farm was established in 1882 and it was predominantly a mixed cattle and grain farm. Tom Lees and his brother Harold Lees established the Lees Bros. herd in 1949, but Tom continued on his own in 1964 and renamed the farm Blair-Athol Polled Herefords. Tom was an active supporter of the industry as a former Vice-President of the Canadian Hereford Association and a founding father of the Canadian Western Agribition. Tom and Fern Lees raised four children, Duncan, Lorna, Chris and Lorraine. By 1971, Val’s parents had retired to British Columbia, so after the short courtship, on Monday, August 9, 1971 Val and Duncan were married in Surrey, B.C. The wedding was planned around a Thursday cattle show in Regina, leaving Duncan Friday and Saturday to get the cattle home, pack up himself and the wedding party and drive over 1,600 miles to Surrey! On their wedding day, Duncan’s father offered Val a little advice. “He told me never to learn how to milk a cow,” Val recalls. “Being a young self-confident female with an athletic background, I would never back down from a challenge. Especially if I could challenge the boys! I was sure I could learn to milk a cow! Why not, I asked?”‘Because if the cow has to be milked,’ he told me, ‘your husband will always come home!’” The newlyweds bought a house in Arcola, and Val taught Grade 4 that fall. She was finding that being married to a farmer and living in town was rather lonely. Her husband would leave early in the morning and wouldn’t return until long after dark. When Val got pregnant with their first child, the Lees decided to sell in Arcola, have a home built, and move it onto the Lees farm. The new house was to arrive before the child, but their daughter, Lynne, arrived on July 24, 1973. The house arrived in mid October of 1973. The young family moved in with Duncan’s parents, and while Val was busy caring for the new baby, Duncan did his part by choosing the flooring, fixtures and wall colors for their new home. Val chuckled when she told me that when the finished house finally arrived, she was surprised and thrilled to move into a beautiful little purple house. Duncan’s school color, I might add.

Val taught school half time after Lynne was born, but as their family kept growing she found it necessary to give up her position. Daughter Arden arrived in 1975, Jeff in 1979, and their family was complete when Jarrett arrived in 1981. While the family was growing, Val would substitute teach whenever possible. Val settled well into rural life during those years and learned everything she could from Duncan about the cattle and farming.

Her first challenge came shortly after moving to the farm when Duncan asked her to drive the grain truck. No one told her that the new help got the least desirable truck! Val spent the day learning to come along the combine and to back up to the grain auger without brakes! “Also, I had never seen a calf born so I would accompany Duncan to the barn and learn all I could about calving,” Val says. “Little did I know that in future years I’d be home with four children and calving cows while Duncan was away at Hereford meetings. I learned to feed or halter break or anything that was necessary. I enjoy farm life and it has always been important to me to embrace a challenge. Just as my mother taught me, and I have always instilled in my children: don’t say you can’t do it because there is always a way. You can do it. Go the extra mile and challenge yourself.”

“I started going to cattle shows and sales with Duncan, and I would sit with my father-in-law, Tom, or some of the more seasoned Hereford wives like Michaline Warnyca or Mary Duke,” Val remembers. “They taught me the ins and outs of the business. They taught me how to keep a good sale catalogue and spell the names correctly. They also clued me in as to what was expected of a farm wife. Mrs. Warnyca also taught me how to show cattle. I would sit with her at the shows, and she would explain the finer points about being a good show person. I never showed single animals, but I was often called to help with the groups. Mrs. Warnyca would give me hand signals from the sidelines when I needed a little coaching. Now, I feel I have the same role with my children and grandchildren.”

In 1990, with four children in school, Val enrolled at the University of Regina to upgrade her Permanent Teaching Certificate to a Bachelor of Education Degree. With Duncan’s help on the home front, she would leave for Regina early Monday mornings and return Friday afternoons in time to meet the Arcola school bus. In 1991, she graduated with a Bachelor of Education Degree specializing in French and English with Canadian History as a minor. Val accepted a position at the Southeast Regional College in Weyburn as the Literacy Co-ordinator. At the time, the Saskatchewan government estimated that one in seven adults living in Southeast Saskatchewan was illiterate. “During my 18 months at the college, I went from having one person who couldn’t read or write to having 100 adult clients,” Val explains. “My job was to evaluate each client and place them with a tutor who could best serve their needs and help them on the road to success. My oldest client was a 93 year old woman who had raised a family, but never learned to read or write. She wanted to read the Bible before she died, and she succeeded!” Another client was an oil executive. He had been managing with the help of his wife. He would tell her what he wanted to say, she would write it into a speech, and he would memorize it. A third client Val remembers really opened her eyes to the urgency of the program. It was a young mother who innocently went to buy groceries one day. The two top shelves were stocked with baby food visible with pictures of babies on the labels. The bottom shelf had cans with no pictures. The mother thought she was buying no name baby food when in reality she had purchased cat food for her baby. Part of Val’s assignment was to work with the grocers to spot potential hazards for people who couldn’t read the labels. She remembers one store in particular where the fruit juice was on the top two shelves and the pretty blue windshield antifreeze was on the bottom shelf. Next Val accepted a short term position teaching Grades 9, 10 and 11 in Redvers, but she was anxious to teach closer to home. The following year she went back to work full-time teaching Grades 7 to 11 in Arcola and has been there for the past 18 years. As a senior member of the staff, Val is looking forward to retirement in three years. Val describes herself as “the mother with the big blue van” who drove to hockey, baseball, figure skating, and music lessons. She has seldom missed an event that involves her children. “I was in the bleachers whether they wanted me there or not,” she laughs. “It has been important to me that my children were given all the advantages I was given as a youth. All four children were in sports and all four played a musical instrument. I grew up in a musical family; my Dad could play any instrument he picked up. Duncan taught the children about agriculture, and he took care of 4-H and the Junior Hereford Association events.”

“The nuns taught me that idle hands get into trouble,” Val notes. I guess that is why I keep my hands busy.” Val is an artist; she paints and draws pencil sketches in her free time. She is also a gardener and takes great pride in her flower gardens. She grows a huge vegetable garden as a labour of love for her family. She processes all kinds of fruit including Wild Saskatoons, Cherries and Peaches. She freezes fruits and vegetables, makes jams and jellies and pickles. Coming from a restaurant background, Val loves to bake and her specialty is fruit pies. “I can put about 40 pies in the deep freeze in two days,” Val tells me. “I think my grandchildren need to grow up eating Grandma’s pies and sleeping under Grandma’s handmade quilts. I quilt in the winter, and every child and grandchild has at least one personalized quilt… so far.”

The Lees are also proud of the fact that all four of their children have attended College, there obtaining degrees in agriculture. “We have done our part to make sure agriculture remains in our future,” Val states. “Agriculture has been good to us.” Their first daughter, Lynne, and her husband Arnie Senger live in Regina. Lynne is a Supervisor at the Affinity Credit Union and Arnie works at Prairie Flying Service. They have two children, Kallie and Aidan. The second daughter, Arden, and her husband Jeromy Charlton own Charlton Farms near Weyburn. They raise Polled Hereford cattle and grain farm 20 quarters of land. Arden works off the farm as a Relationship Manager with Farm Credit Corporation. They have three children, Matthew, Jade and Andrew. Jeff and his wife Grace live on the farm next to Val and Duncan and help with the purebred operation. Jeff also works full-time as a gauger for Enbridge Inc. They have three children, Christin, Kylee and Jackson. Duncan Jackson Lees is Val & Duncan’s newest grandchild born, January 23, 2012. Congratulations Lees Family. Jarrett, still single, lives in Weyburn and works as a battery operator for the Apache Corporation. He is also a big help with the Lees’ purebred operation.

“Now that we have watched our children grow and we’ve seen the friends they have cultivated and the self confidence they have achieved by being active members in 4-H and the Junior Hereford Associations,” Val notices, “Duncan and I are thrilled to be back watching our grandchildren follow in their parents’ footsteps. We have always felt our children were safe when they left home. There is always a Hereford breeder somewhere close to willingly help them along the way.” Duncan and Chris Lees farmed with their father until his sudden death in a farm accident. In1984, Chris started his own purebred Hereford herd, and by the mid 1990’s Duncan and his family made the decision to stop mixed farming and continue solely raising purebred Horned and Polled cattle. Today, they breed approximately 200 females annually and co-host an annual bull sale each April called the Wilson Lees Value Added Bull Sale. Each October they also partner with the Wilson family to co-host the Blair-Athol Haroldson’s & Friends (including Mil-Wray, Til-Toba, Roselawn Polled Herefords and Old Burchill Farms) Fall Production Sale. They have successfully turned Blair-Athol into a brand name throughout the industry by promoting and exhibiting their cattle across Canada and the United States. 2010 marked the Lees family 38th consecutive year of exhibiting cattle at Canadian Western Agribition, and 2010 also marked the 100th consecutive year they have registered purebred Hereford Cattle. Now into their fifth generation, the Lees family also celebrated 125 years farming on the original homestead in 2007. Like his father, Duncan has tirelessly given his time for the betterment of the beef industry in Canada. He has been a 4-H Leader, an Adult Advisor for the Canadian Junior Hereford Association, a Southeast Saskatchewan Hereford Zone President, a Past Saskatchewan Hereford Association President, and is a former Canadian Hereford Association President. In turn, Val is a Past President of the Local Band Association, a Past President of the Figure Skating Club, and a Past Brownie, Girlguide, Cubs and Boy Scout Leader. Presently, Val is the Staff Representative for the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation, Local Interests Negotiating Committee (LINC). She is presently bargaining on behalf of 550 teachers for an upgraded zone contract. Duncan’s past positions with the Canadian Hereford Associations has allowed the Lees to travel throughout Canada and worldwide. They have attended National Shows and Junior Hereford Bonanzas across Canada and the United States. They have also represented Canada at World Hereford events in Argentina, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. “I never thought I would get to experience those countries,” Val mentions. “With my interest in history, I cherished every moment of the tours.”

Greetings from the East!

First, I hope everyone had a great holiday season, filled with family, friends, and nothing but great things. I also hope everyone is now into a successful calving season with the 2012 show strings well underway.

We have had a great year here in the Maritimes. We had two very successful sales, the Down East Hereford Sale, held in September, and the Atlantic Bonus Sale, held in October. A huge thank you to all who supported our sales.

Our show season was also a success, in all three provinces. With five MOE shows and several other exhibitions, the Hereford breed was well represented this past summer. We are anxiously awaiting the start of the 2012 season.

The New Brunswick Hereford Club would like to take this opportunity to send a HUGE THANK YOU to Vance Wilson. He has been the Secretary/Treasurer for NB for many, many years and has since retired. His many years of hard work and dedication to the Maritime Hereford Association and the Junior Association are greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten.

We would also like to wish a Happy Retirement to Ernest Pippy of Prince Edward Island, who has decided to retire from the purebred world. Ernie, who owns Kimbrook Farm, will be missed as an exhibitor, but we expect to still him around at various Hereford functions. Happy Retirement Ernie!!

We are set to have our Director’s meeting in January, where details will be finalized regarding the Annual Meeting and East Coast Round Up, tentatively set for the end of May. We also have an all breeds bull sale happening this spring, in Nappan, NS, which will include Hereford Bulls.

Cheers!

By Chris Poley

2012 will be the year of the believer! For all of you who stayed fast in your belief that common sense would prevail, our markets would reopen and the demand for your high quality safe protein source would rebound. Many did not believe and bailed out; that is their loss and your gain as they helped to decrease inventory, which will keep the prices higher for longer. Having just returned from Denver, it was very encouraging to see a definitely more upbeat beef industry on that side of the border too. The US inventories are low, creating higher demand for available product, which is also good for us Canadians. Export possibilities around the world for Canadian beef and live cattle are plentiful.

I recently heard one of the auction mart fieldmen comment that he had been working at the sale barn for a few years now and this fall was the first time he realized producers in his area had teeth, because this was the first fall he had seen them smile. These smiles are well deserved and long over due. There is a young guy in my area who increased his inventory by more than double in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and this was not easy as we all know the banks did not have the foresight to lend money on five hundred dollar cows (but they will today on fifteen hundred dollar cows). However, they scrimped and saved and bought cows and the calves he sold this fall out of the cows he bought, brought twice the purchase price of the cow. He was a believer and got rewarded for his belief. Now this is all feel good, warm and fuzzy stories and that is okay because we all deserve to hear them as the market is good and the industry is strong and we all dam sure heard enough negative stories through the last eight years.

Now that things are good though is no time to sit back and coast; rather it is the time when you can afford to get aggressive and capitalize at the highest possible level. The single most influential contributor to your calf crop and ultimately your

bottom line is your herd bull selection. When prices are high that is when you need to purchase sires that will give you top quality calves with the most possible pounds to sell at a high price per pound. Work with breeders who you are comfortable doing business with and ask them to help you with your bull selections. After all they have studied the genetics before they ever purchased the sire or straw of semen. They will know the strengths and weaknesses of each pedigree and have been with their sale bulls virtually since the day they were born and know their growth patterns. Depending on your individual management practices and target marketing timing, different bloodlines will be more suited. Any reputable breeder will be more than willing to assist you with your selection and will be honest and straight up with you or he will only ever do business with you twice, the first and last time. Some people may feel like they are bothering the owner or feel stupid asking lots of questions about the bulls and the program. There is no need to feel that way; there is no such thing as a dumb question and besides, you might as well make him earn the sale, your business and your trust. After all, there has to be a partnership formed between the breeder and the bull buyer for both to be successful.

Enjoy the good times we are in and the excitement and promise a new calf crop brings!

See you on the road.

I’ve seen our breeders really do a remarkable job in making our breed more convenient by lowering birth weights and improving calving ease, while maintaining performance and efficiency that the Charolais breed has always been known for.The tans have always been accepted for their ability to feed well, grow and yield with a little bigger carcass weight. I am encouraged that the white calves have returned to selling right alongside the tans. Now the silvers are selling at a premium because they offer heavier carcass weight over straight British cattle and provide market flexibility while meeting the marbling and lean meat yield requirements of the packer.Over the last number of years the beef industry has emphasized marbling. Going forward I see the industry demanding cattle that perform and yield. I believe the Charolais breed is in a great position to fill that demand and the Char calf will continue to be a very valued commodity.’’

-Neil Gillies, General Manager Canadian Charolais Association

In 1988, Neil Gillies started as the fieldman for the Canadian Charolais Association. He left to take a position with the Ontario Cattlemen’s Association, working with beef processors to develop value-added beef programs. In 2001, Neil was given the opportunity to return to the Canadian Charolais Association as the General Manager.

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) numbers are a valuable tool when selecting breeding stock. Where do these EPD numbers come from? How do I use them? To the uninitiated, the number of EPD values available can seem overwhelming. Counting carcass and ultrasound traits which have subcategories such as marbling, ribeye area etc. there are over a dozen different traits that you can select for using EPDs and that number is likely to grow. They can be as daunting as looking at a financial statement if you don’t know what the numbers mean or how they were generated.

Some may believe that EPDs are yesterday’s news; genes/genetic markers are the way to go! EPDs have been around since the 1980’s and are made possible only because of incredible advances in computer technology. The identification of genes and EPDs both have a place in animal selection, but represent different branches of the science of genetics. EPDs fall into what is known as quantitative genetics; whereby, through complex calculations the genetic component of measurable traits like body weight is determined. Identifying and studying the influence of individual genes is molecular genetics which is a much newer and rapidly expanding field that looks at the function and interactions of genes. In many cases the molecular side is helping to explain differences in EPDs, but we still have only hit the tip of the iceberg in molecular genetics. EPDs are more of a big picture tool for genetic selection and will remain so until we figure out how all of these genes interact and how they interact in various environmental situations.

A common misunderstanding is that EPDs predict actual performance of the animal. Two key words are average and progeny! They actually predict the average performance of the animal’s progeny. They are not designed to predict the animals own performance and they will not predict uniformity in the calf crop. In other words, you can still have great calves and not-so great calves, but on average the calves from a bull with a higher EPD for a growth trait than his same-breed contemporary should perform better. You also can’t compare EPDs between breeds; only within a breed.

How animals perform is determined not only by genetics, but also by how they are raised. Pasture, creep feeding, how the dam milks, weather, disease, parasites and so on can all play a role in how fast the calf grows. Calves from a single AI sire in one herd may weigh more at weaning than calves from the same bull in another

herd, so it is important that groups of calves are compared as fairly as possible, accounting for these differences in management. Within your own herd this is usually pretty straight-forward if all calves go to the same pasture, just don’t forget to compare bulls, heifers, steers and twins separately. However, to calculate EPDs, this information must be entered into a computer program designed to account for these differences and to keep track of all of this animal’s relatives. Heritability of trait is also considered when calculating EPDs and is a scientifically determined estimate of, for example, how much the difference between the yearling weights of two calves is due to genetics. So for yearling weight the heritability is approximately 40%; therefore, 60% of the difference is due to feeding etc. If a yearling bull has an adjusted 365 day weight that is 100 lbs heavier than the average of the others in the evaluation then only 40 lbs of that difference is consider to be due to genetics. Now that young bull will only account for ½ of the genetic makeup of his calf-crop so his EPD for yearling weight is only +20 lbs based on his performance information alone. However, this is only part of the story. Calculating EPDs’ requires performance information from not only the animal in question, but also as many relatives as possible. As the animal matures and has progeny of its own that information is included and really enhances the accuracy of the EPDs. EPDs are recalculated with every calf crop and the more information that is received from successive generations the more accurate or reliable the EPDs become. Traits like birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight are correlated so that must be accounted for too. Accuracy values are often listed below the respective EPD. The higher the number the less chance there is that the EPD will change very much with subsequent calf crops which means that the average performance of that animal’s calves is not going to vary much from what was seen previously. Young bulls will have EPDs with low accuracies so it is not uncommon to see their EPDs change over time. Sometimes for the better; sometimes not. Sires with large numbers of progeny as is often the case with AI sires will have the most accurate EPDs. If you maintain a herd of purebred cattle composed of relatively obscure cow families and never submit any performance information then EPDs for your animals are not going to be very useful to anyone. There is simply not a lot there to substantiate those numbers.

Biography:Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at theWestern College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked inmixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice inSaskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run aherd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.

Understanding and Using EPDs

Herefords Today Winter 2012 80

Page 83: Herefords Today

For most commercial cattlemen, there are really only four EPDs they need to look at: birth weight (BW); weaning weight (WW); yearling weight (YW); and milk. The others, with perhaps the exception of the carcass traits, are more useful for purebred breeders. Birth weight is the best predictor of calving ease and the birth weight EPD is more reliable than looking at the bull’s own birth weight. A bull with a 65 lb birth weight may have been born early, may be a twin or could have been born to a heifer. These sorts of things are accounted for in the EPD calculation. Wean-ing weight and yearling weight are easily measured performance traits. A bull with a 10 lb higher weaning EPD another bull of the same breed will sire calves that weigh an average of 10 lbs more at weaning. The milk EPD is a maternal EPD. What this means is that it is predicting theperformance of the animals daughters, not the sons. The daughters of a bull with a +20 milk EPD would be expected to wean calves that weigh 10 lbs more than a bull with a +10 milk EPD. Obviously, the sons don’t produce milk, but they can pass on supe-rior traits to the next generation. If you want more milk in your herd choose sires with higher milk EPDs.

Comparing animal to animal when looking through the sale catalogue is one way to use EPDs; another is to compare to the breed average usually also posted in the sale catalogue. It is important to realize that the breed average does not mean that the average animal pos-sesses that particular set of numbers rather that is the average for each individual trait. If you are looking for a heifer bull then compare the birth weight EPDs to the average birth weight EPDs for the breed.

One of the most common mistakes I see is the tendency to focus on only one trait when selecting bulls versus balanced trait selection. Cattlemen in the market for a heifer bull will focus on a calving ease breed and then look for a bull with a low birth weight EPD. Likewise, I have seen bulls selected for use on heifers with breed leading WW and YW EPDs. With the exception of what we call curve benders these traits are related. Bulls with really high WW EPDs generally have BW EPDs well above average. Determine which traits are important to you, then choose acceptable EPD ranges for those traits, and realize that tradeoffs may have to be made.
