We look at the countries and cities that Paul traveled during his ministry as he spread the Christian faith among the Jews and Gen-tiles. We will also study how Paul brought the people of these countries to Christ and get a flavor of life through Paul’s eyes.

This class discusses and examines, in a non-threatening manner, the Bible passages used through the book. After several years of study, this group is halfway through the book. I simply want to share with you what’s in my heart. This last month was a difficult month. We traveled back to Texas so that I could officiate a funeral service for a family friend. I typically do not like to officiate funerals for family members and friends, but I agreed to do so in this case. We also took the opportunity to visit with Margaret’s father, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. In traveling down to Texas, I didn’t know how God was going to use me and, to be completely honest with you, didn’t want to be used. The family friend’s time on earth, in my and others’ opinion, was much too short. I didn’t feel qualified to answer

any tough questions, because I was struggling with them myself.

It’s no secret that Christians face difficult times in their lives. That’s the reality of the Christian life. Obstacles, stumbling blocks, tribulations, and the storms of life do occur. It’s not a matter of if they come, but rather when they come. No doubt, we are continuously tested in life, but I believe that as we turn to God and put our trust in Him, He gives us what we need to endure. In fact, God works through us, despite us. His grace is evident everyday. I continue to be amazed!

I was reminded of one of my favorite figures in church history, Dwight L. Moody. Have you ever heard his story? Dwight Moody is one of the great evangelists of the 19th century. He was born into a large family in 1837. His father was a small farmer and stonemason and was also an alcoholic and died at the age of 41 when Dwight was only four years old. He had five older brothers and a younger sister, with an additional twin brother and sister born one month after his father’s death. His mother struggled to support the family and some of them, including Dwight, had to be sent out into the work force to pay for room and board.

When he was 17, he moved to Boston to work at his uncle’s shoe store. While he worked for his uncle, he attended the Congregational Church of Mount Vernon at the insistence of his uncle. He applied for church membership in 1855 and was rejected. Can you imagine that? His teacher, Edward Kimball, said that he had seen few people whose minds were spiritually darker than when he first arrived in Sunday School.

Kimball worked with him and, through their conversations, Moody came to know how much God loved him. Moody would go on to minister to the welfare of sailors, gamblers, and thieves in Chicago. One witness recalled those early days of ministry:

“The first meeting I ever saw him at was in a little old shanty that had been abandoned by a saloon-keeper. Mr. Moody had got the place to hold the meetings in at night. I went there a little late; and the first thing I saw was a man standing up with a few tallow candles around him, holding a boy, and trying to read to him the story of the prodigal son and a great many words he could not read out, and had to skip. I thought, “if the Lord can ever use such an instrument as that for His honor and glory, it will astonish me!”

Moody, through God’s grace, continued his witness. Being human, I’m sure he must have felt discouraged at times, but never lost his faith. His witness led to one of the largest Sunday school classes of its time. The average attendance was 650 with 60 volunteers from various local churches who served as teachers. It became so well known that newly elected President Abraham Lincoln visited and spoke at a Sunday School meeting in 1860.

Despite the obstacles and tough times of his life, Moody had a tremendous impact on numerous lives. God used this simple man powerfully. He is known as one of the great evangelists in all of church history and a real demonstration of how God can use those who answer His call. You may know some of his legacy. Moody, through the grace of Jesus Christ, is credited with founding the Moody Church, the Northfield Mount Hermon School, and the Moody Bible Institute and Publishers, as well as having written hymns and develop worldwide missions.

As I was thinking about Moody, I couldn’t help but smile. I was encouraged and I hope his story has been an encouragement to you. Moody’s story reminds me that God doesn’t call the qualified, but rather qualifies the called.

As I reflect upon our recent trip to Texas, I am amazed. I can see how God used me, despite me! The trip reminded me that it’s not about me. I don’t have to have all the answers. I don’t have to rely on my own strength and you don’t either. You and I simply need to be faithful. I’ll leave to you a verse of Scripture that holds a great deal of meaning for me:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1-3)

May God strengthen us with His grace, so that we might not grow weary or lose heart as we continue the race!

Getting together with your small group can either be the biggest blessing of your week, or at times it can feel like a complete flop if you are the group leader. Try these helpful hints out in your group this week and be blessed.

1. Come prepared. Highlight questions you feel are important to you.2. Consider meeting in homes. It lends to a more comfortable, inti-

mate setting. If children come with parents, hire a babysitter and share the cost.

3. Share responsibilities. They could include leader, co-leader, host, caller, time-watcher.

4. welcoming guests. Have one person responsible to welcome folks other than the leaders.

5. refreshments always enhance your gathering. Build in 10 to 15 minutes of snack/social time before starting your session, so if peo-ple are running a few minutes late they won’t miss the beginning.

6. Avoid interruptions. Turn cell phones and pagers down (or off).7. Always start on time. If you do this faithfully from the first meet-

ing, you’ll avoid the group arriving and starting later and later each week.

8. ideal group size. 3-12 people is ideal, otherwise break into smaller groups for discussion or prayer times. This encourages greater participation by everyone in the group and begins developing leadership skills in others.9. Come to an agreement with your group to keep confidentiality. A covenant can be very helpful in cre-ating an environment of safety.10. help one another stay on track. Stay focused to the topic at hand. 11. Turn the empty chair into an open chair. Without a clear vision for the open chair, groups don’t grow spiritually nor do they reach their highest potential for serving the congregation as a whole.12. end on time. Regardless of where you are in the

lesson, when the clock rolls around to the “agreed” ending time. This communicates that you value and respect everyone’s time.

13. Confirm your next gathering. Also, make sure that whoever is responsible for refreshments at the next meeting is aware of his or her responsibility.

As we have been dreaming and planning ways to minister to families we have repeatedly said, “When the new Pastor gets

here…”

Well now he IS here and what a treat it is getting to know him and to hear his vision for the way we minister to families at FPC Yakima. I was asked to share with Mark some of our family min-istry history at FPC and as I prepared to do that I realized that the arrival of Mark Tumney in the role of Associate Pastor of Family Ministry and Outreach is the answer to the prayers of many faith-ful people over the past 15 years or longer. Thank you God for your provision and your perfect timing! What a wonderful commit-ment our church has made to helping families grow in Christ-like maturity by providing strong pastoral leadership in this area.

Lots of new things are developing and one that we are very ex-cited about is the new Family Ministry Board that will serve under DMT and will set a unified vision for how we minister to children, students, and the parent’s that go with them.

StUDeNt MINIStrY leaDer traINING On Saturday April 10 We are invited to join a one day training seminar in Tri-Cities on the topic of relationships with young people. The guest professor for this event is Dr. Andrew Root who has written a couple of brilliant books about youth ministry. The event is free for the Presbyterian youth leaders of Central Washington, so please talk to Tyler or Karin if you would like to join us. The seminar is from 10am to 3pm so we will be meeting at the PowerHouse at 8:30am to drive over together. This will be a wonderful day to get to spend together as leaders, and a great opportunity for new leaders to join.

booM-ShaKa-locK-INFriday March 26 we are having an all-nighter for Middle School students (grades 6th – 8th). We are meeting at the PowerHouse at 8pm and students will need to be picked up at 8am Saturday morning. We will have worship together, a short scripture study, lots of games, some crafts and video games in the gym, a late night snack, and a movie to fall asleep to. Please bring $2 for food, a sleeping bag and pillow for sleeping. Don’t bring iPods, energy drinks, or your pets…dogs don’t like dodgeball! This is a great event to invite a friend to so grab a flyer from the PowerHouse and remember to sign up.

GhorMleY MeaDoW chrIStIaN caMP Living up in the mountains has many advantages, but a few drawbacks as well. One of the most evident is the remoteness of our locale. Another is the fact that on most weekends our staff are hard at work serving camp guests so attendance at church on Sunday is sketchy at best. As a result, you may not get the op-portunity to get to know our staff or see them very often. That is most unfortunate because our staff are fabulous servants of God and essential to the ongoing ministry that First Presbyterian Church has in Ghormley Meadow Christian Camp.

One of those amazing servants the past 3 years has been Ju-lia Springer, our office manager. Julia came to Ghormley in Feb-ruary 2008 from Indiana and has done a fantastic job as guest group director, office and Sundeck manager. She has brought professional organization to the office and developed great rela-tionships with our guest groups. She is desiring to return to the Midwest, to be closer to family and so will conclude her service at Ghormley in March. We will miss her greatly, as a vital staff member and a good friend. God Bless you Julia, we have been blessed by you being here.

The Team arrived! Gustavo, Katrina and family arrived in Ticul and Kathy and Jim, Doug and Lynn, Buzz, Larry, Dave and Monti arrived in Merida on the evening of February 13. Gustavo and family attended worship on Sunday morning at the Presbyterian church in Yotholin and taught in their Adult Sunday School and later, the entire team attended the evening service.

Our first day started with an awkward minor scratch of one of our rented cars. We thank God for his protection and for collision insurance. We did not let that crash our day or our mission. After that we had a very pro-ductive day with tanks washed, holes drilled, carbon filtering and water softening tanks filled, pipes glued together, pumps installed, wires con-nected, women trained, etc. We finished our day with devotions after having a pizza feast at the corner pizzería.

The team finished the project on February 17. We had a kickoff service at 6:30 that evening with worship, testimonies, training certificates and a commissioning message by pastor Wilberth. Then, we closed with a drink… pure water coming from the new water purifying plant. By the time you were celebrating Ash Wednesday service, we were celebrating with panuchos, a typical Yucatan dish.

The name of the water purifying plant is Zayab, the Mayan word for Water Spring! Our brothers and sisters at the Presbyterian church of Sinai in Yotholin have a clear understanding of their mission to take the water from the Living Spring and share it along with the Zayab water to their community.

Praise The Lord and thank you for supporting this wonder-ful project that is already transforming an entire commu-nity in many ways.

MISSIoNarY updateFebruary 13th, 2010

BUSy SeASoN iN BATTAMBANg!(exCerPT)

Hello friends and family all across the globe! Already it’s February and this first month and a half of 2010 has flown by. The “cool season” is officially over and the cool mornings and evenings have been replaced with hotness! Our normal pace of life here is actually quite fast and crazy but we enjoy and grow through all the challenges and exciting things! It has been amazing to get into the new year and start what is the fourth year of YWAM Battambang we see all the faithful ways that this ministry has grown. Here’s a peek into what’s been going on these last few months:

Highlights:1. Our third Phase 2 school we ran has officially ended at the end of January, with many of the students continuing on to staff the upcoming DTS!

2. Most of our staff traveled up to Chiang Mai for YWAM’s 50th Anniversary at the beginning of February. It was an amazing time of celebration with other YWAM missionaries in the SE Asia region, along with YWAM’s founders Loren and Darlene Cunningham.

Lowlights:

1. Caroline has had mono for the last six weeks and it has not been an easy time for her, especially because she spends most of her days, resting and at home. Please pray for complete healing for her, that she may be back on her feet again and get back into the rhythmn here. Thank God that there’s only one “lowlight” in our lives right now!

Thank you for all your continual prayers and support and believing in us and what we do here. We pray that in the midst of this busy season here, that we will continue to live it out with grace and strength from Jesus, as He is our true guide.

Presbyterian women is a national organization for all women in the Presbyterian Church USA. It is organized in the local church, Central WA Presbytery and Alaska Northwest Synod. In our church we have three circles: Deborah, Edith Ferry and Naomi. We also include the Baby Celebration quilters.

In our budget for 2009 we gave support to Ghormely Meadow Christian Camp, the church library, Campbell Farm, Christmas quilts, Carillon Bell Choir, Baby

Celebration quilts, church custodians and the Union Gospel Mission Youth Center. Our membership also supports the national organization with the “Thank Offering”, “Birthday Offering” and the “Least Coin Offering.”

On Monday, March 15 there will be a Spring gathering of P.W. at Walla Walla Presbyterian church from 9:00a-3:00p. Interested ladies please contact Chris Leverett: 965-8481.
