ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA OF CATULLUS GROTTOES AND MUSEUM

This is a beautiful archaeological area immersed in an olive grove overlooking the lake. It’s been known since the 15th century as “Catullus Grottoes”, from the name of the Latin poet whose family owned a villa there. These important re-mains belong to one of the main Roman residential villas in northern Italy. The museum contains significant artifacts.

CASTELLO SCALIGERO (CASTLE)

Scenically surrounded by the waters of Lake Garda, this castle was built in the second half of the 14th century by Vero-na’s noble Della Scala family. The main features are the wet dock, an incredi-ble fortified port built in the 14th cen-tury, the ramparts, and the crenellated towers. The central tower is 37 metres. It is possible to enjoy a beautiful walk on the ramparts.

ROMAN VILLA AND ANTIQUARIUM

Originally located in proximity to the be-ach, it is the most important archaeolo-gical testimony of great Late Antiquity Roman villas in northern Italy. Divided into 3 sectors, it preserves splendid polychrome mosaic floors. A small museum displays interesting remains, parts of statues, and portraits.

ROCCA VISCONTEO - VENETA E CASA DEL PODESTÀ

In a panoramic location, Rocca is a mi-litary fortification from which you can enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Garda. The large structure also contains “Casa del Podestà”, restored and improved at the beginning of the 20th century to become a House-Museum. The monu-mental library is of particular value.

SANTUARIO MADONNA DEL CARMINE(SHRINE)

Built in Late Lombardy Gothic style (15th century) the Shrine and its rustic architecture stand on a splendid terrace overlooking the lake. The interior, with single nave and gable roof, is decora-ted with frescoes dating from the 15th and 16th centuries whose figures and colours recall Mantegna, Foppa, and Perugino’s styles.

ROCCA DI MANERBA CASTLE - CIVIC MUSEUM AND ARCHEOLOGICAL PARK

The remains of the castle are in a spectacular position on a spur domina-ting the lake. Along the slope that takes to the Rocca is the Museum, whose galleries showcase local archaeologi-cal findings as well as landscapes and natural features of the region, including the prehistoric pile dwelling site (UNE-SCO).

MARTESMUSEO D’ARTE SORLINI

Created thanks to the efforts of Fonda-zione Luciano Sorlini, it is an extraordi-nary collection of paintings hosted in an elegant 16th century palace. A fascina-ting themed visit itinerary highlights the dialogue between the most prevalent Venetian painters of the 18th century like Tiepolo, Ricci, Guardi, and Canalet-to with locals like Bellini, Savoldo, and Pitocchetto.

DUOMO DI SANTA MARIA ANNUNZIATA(CATHEDRAL)

Located in the town’s historic centre, it was built between 1453 and 1502 in Late Gothic style. The door was built during the Renaissance period. The interior is divided into three naves and is an authentic art gallery. Of particular interest is the large 14th century cross by Giovanni Teutonico. There are also works by Romanino.

MU-SA - MUSEO DI SALÒ

A place for culture and events, the civic museum contains artistic and scienti-fic collections that narrate the history of the city, an important centre during “Magnifica Patria”, the Venetian domi-nation. A room with ancient musical instruments is dedicated to Gasparo da Salò, whose name is connected to the manufacturing of stringed instruments, in particular the violin.

IL VITTORIALE DEGLI ITALIANI

Strongly wanted and created by Gabrie-le d’Annunzio with the collaboration of architect Maroni, Vittoriale is an eclectic ensemble of buildings, gardens, streets, squares, an outdoor theatre, and water streams created from 1921. A visit to the site enables you to understand the spirit of the famous poet/soldier who is buried in the Mausoleum.

ST. ANDREA MONUMENTAL CHURCH

Already documented in 1040 A.D., the current building dates from the 12th century and is a wonderful example of Lombard Romanesque architecture with Verona influences. The polychro-me marble façade with the door deco-rated with plants, animals, and siren motifs is beautiful. The crypt contains the remains of St. Ercolanus in a sar-cophagus.

NONII ARII ROMAN VILLA

Dating back to the 1st century A.D., the villa used to be on the lakefront and be-longed to Brescia’s illustrious Nonii fa-mily, who had several properties on the lake. Only a few rooms of this imposing and luxurious residence are accessible today; they showcase important por-tions of wall decorations and mosaic floors.

Catullus Grottoes - Sirmione (BS)

PAPER MILL VALLEY - CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE - PAPER MUSEUM 

Located in the wonderful Paper Mill Val-ley, the Museum venue is the old paper production complex, whose nucleus dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. The building, modified several times to make room for new machines, is cha-racterised by a tall chimney. Workshops and demonstrations enhance the visit to this site.

SANTUARIO DI MONTE CASTELLO(MADONNA DELLA STELLA SHRINE)

In a splendid position on a cliff overlo-oking the lake, it stands on the remains of an old temple turned castle. Inside, it preserves “Casa Santa”, a small temple estimated to have been built in 800 A.D. The interior boasts Giotto-style fresco-es. The spectacular view over Lake Gar-da from Mount Baldo to the Sirmione peninsula.
