More than 20 per cent of all bond refund chequesare returned to the RTA because tenants fail toprovide an updated forwarding address.
Tenants can avoid this problem by giving the RTAtheir bank details so money can be depositedstraight into their accounts. Landlords and agentscan also help by reminding tenants that it is thefastest way to get bonds back.
RTA General Manager, Fergus Smith, said directcredit was not only quick, but secure.
"I encourage all tenants to complete the bankdetails section on the bond refund form to ensure aspeedy refund," he said.
"It takes around two days for bond money to berefunded via direct credit. Tenants who wantcheques sent to them may have to wait more than
a week, taking into account postal delivery andbank clearance times," he said.
Tenants are responsible for ensuring the RTA haseither their bank account details or an up-to-dateforwarding address.
If a bond refund cheque is not banked within 15months the money becomes unclaimed.
Another method of receiving your bond back, is totake the completed form to an Australia Postbranch and they can refund the cash. In thisinstance, all parties to the bond must be present toreceive the refund.
