Dear Friends,

It’s official, I love my job here at Pike Place Market! Thank you for welcoming me with open arms in my first full year as Executive Director of the Pike Place Market Foundation.

The Market is extraordinarily unique to our city. We are an intentionally created neighborhood where farmers sell their crops, businesses start and our low-income neighbors live and thrive. The Market is truly the heart of our city, and The Market Foundation makes sure that heart is strong.

We know the vitality and economic health of Seattle’s downtown is inextricably linked to the well-being of our most vulnerable citizens. With the help of all of YOU, our loyal supporters, I am proud to say we have infused 18.5 million dollars into the life-changing services in the Market and forever changed the lives of nearly 300,000 people in our community.

Yet, as I look around our city I know we can do more. Too many frail seniors walk through our doors without food or housing, low-income and independent workers lack basic healthcare, families are forced to choose inadequate care for their children, at a high cost to their future.

In the coming years, we have the opportunity to do more. You’ve likely seen in the media that the Pike Place Market will build on an under-used piece of land in the historic district to develop the Pike Place Market Waterfront Entrance. This development will not only add to our civic, retail and marketplace infrastructure, it will also provide vital units of low-income housing for seniors and community space where we can address emerging needs. I will personally keep you informed about this project as the site plans continue to take shape.

Here at the Pike Place Market Foundation, a slice of pie is much more than delicious crust and fruit filling—it’s the difference between hungry and nourished, sick and healthy, homeless and housed. On April 16, 2013 we “Cut the Pie” of funds raised with an awards ceremony to support our community of services in the Market. Here are the results and the impact of the funds in the year ahead.

How we Cut the Pie


Pike Market Medical Clinic received $265,000, enough to cover the unfunded healthcare costs of 13,250 visits or 50% of total appointments. Pike Market Senior Center received $183,000 to cover more than 30% of operating expenses, including breakfast, lunch, wellness activities, employment services and case management. Pike Market Child Care & Preschool received $175,000 to fund tuition assistance for 30 children—that’s 74,000 hours of care over 264 days out of the year. Pike Market Food Bank received $65,000 to cover the cost of 12,160 visits to the Food Bank.

Market Fresh Coupons received $25,000 to provide low- income seniors and families access to fresh fruits and vegetables in Pike Place Market.

The Market’s new SNAP Matching program received $10,000 to double the purchasing power of our low-income neighbors when shopping with food stamps at farm and produce tables in the Market. Heritage House at the Market received $15,000 to improve the quality of life for our frailest seniors in assisted living. The Community Safety Net Fund received $2,500 to assist our Market community with emergency assistance.

Grinning ear-to-ear at the Food BankLinda, a regular volunteer and shopper at the Pike Market Food Bank, was thrilled to meet Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn when he visited for a press conference in November.

The Mayor encouraged city residents to get involved with local food banks to help end hunger for low-income kids, families and seniors. City-wide food donations were down 30%, but the need was up 25%.

Hightlights from the YEAR

Preschool for ALL KidsThe graduating class at Pike Market Preschool is off to a great start as they begin Kindergarten this year. Our Preschool provides high-quality early learning to families of all income levels.


A place to call home in the MarketAfter years of living in shelters and sleeping outside, Bob, a retired fishing boat captain, just got the keys to his new apartment at Vincent House in the Market! Sandra, his advocate at Pike Market Senior Center, stuck by his side for 3 years as he applied and waited for low-income housing. As Bob said, “It’s a happy ending!”

A different view of health care Neighborcare Health’s Pike Market Medical Clinic takes a different approach to preventative healthcare, as seen here in this photo of a twice-weekly walking group organized by Clinic staff.

“Providing primary care is increasingly a team sport,” said Mark Secord, Executive Director/CEO of NeighborCare.

Whether Clinic staff are organizing walking groups for diabetes patients, or providing direct care on the streets and inside of low-income housing downtown, the clinic is expanding its reach beyond the four walls of its facility.

$3,257.41 from her home at the bottom of the Hill Climb. Pictured here with Rachel the Piggy Bank: This year Resident Advocate Sandra Dunn celebrated 20 years of service as the “Miracle Worker” in the Market! She works with up to 160 seniors every year and has easily touched the lives of thousands of elders in our community over the past 20 years.

Everyone in Seattle has a story about what captured their heart at Pike Place Market. For LeAnn Loughran it started with breakfast at The Athenian and helping to “Save the Market” in the 1970s. Looking back, LeAnn also has a 25-year record of donations to the Pike Place Market Foundation. “I guess it’s been a little here and a little there that’s hopefully made a difference over time,” she said. To ensure “lasting support to the Market community’s social service programs” LeAnn has dedicated a bequest to the Foundation in her estate plan.

As her friends like to refer to it as “LeAnn’s beloved Market”; we can say, it’s true!

fruits & veggies for low-income neighbors Meet Ruth (pictured right), a Food Link volunteer who helped collect more than 15,500 lbs of donated fruits and veggies last year from Market produce vendors. That’s almost 8 tons of produce gleaned for our neighbors in need. She’s doing her daily pick up at Lina’s Arcade No. 7 produce stand—one of the many stands that donate unsold produce to the Pike Market Food Bank.
