“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love

for one another.” — John 13:35

Dear Friends in Christ,

What are the core values of our congregation we call First Lutheran?

What are the what? I know you are probably thinking, “What are core

values and why do we need them?” First, let me explain. It seems to

me that clear, concise, accurate mission and vision statements can be

great tools congregations can use to help shape their ministry in the

world. Yet, to reach a truly accurate mission or vision statement the

core values need to be identified because everything a congregation

does is grounded in its core values.

The current wisdom of many church transformation experts is that con-

gregations act according to their core values, not according to their

plans or goals or mission statements. If a congregation’s core values do

not support its vision statement and mission statement, the process of

creating a meaningful, accurate mission statement is fruitless. You see,

congregational behavior does not stem from what is written on paper

but from the core values of its members. Congregations always act on

their core values, not on the goals they set. A congregation expresses

its core values in answering the question: Why do we do what we do?

With that in mind, myself and a group of your elected and volunteer

leaders gathered together at the end of April to begin the process of

lifting up our congregation’s core values. We began the process by

learning together a definition of what congregation core values are and

why they are important. We continued the process by gathering into

three small groups to discuss some questions that would help us get at

our congregation’s core values.

The questions we discussed were: What are the congregation’s

strengths? What values do you think lay behind these strengths and

commitments? What changes would cause our membership to feel dis-

connected and leave? What do our people care passionately about?

What are the valued practices? What really makes us unique as a

church? How does the community view the congregation?

(Pastor Doug—cont. from pg. 1)

We continued the process by gathering into a large group and comparing

the lists and notes taken by each small group as they discussed the ques-

tions. We lifted up the things that all three lists had in common. The

things identified as being in common included: youth programs, commu-

nity support, a come-as-you-are, inclusive, open-door way of being to-

gether, care for people (in the congregation, community, and world),

strong leadership, programs that are action oriented, and giving (time,

talent, treasure).

We then looked at what was in common from the discussions of the

three groups and worked to identify the values suggested by what was

lifted up. We identified these four values (in no particular order): Giv-

ing, Accepting, Loving, Caring. We then determined to sit with these

values for a while to see if they truly are our congregation’s core values.

This is where you can help this process in a huge way. I am asking you

to consider these four core values (Giving, Accepting, Loving, Caring)

and ask yourself if they truly identify who we are as First Lutheran

Church and if they accurately reflect why we do what we do. I am ask-

ing you to tell us your thoughts about these core values. Are they accu-

rate? Is there something we overlooked? Could they be phrased in a bet-

ter way? We want to hear from you, so please let us know what you are

thinking. More to come . . .

Blessings,

Pastor Doug

Women’s Ministries – May, 2018

On Saturday, May 12th, several of our members attended the

Prairie Rose Cluster gathering at American Lutheran in Tolna. It

was a wonderful day. The speaker, Kjellaug Reyerson, was truly

inspirational. She spoke from her heart with descriptions of events

that she made clear. She spoke of fears and sadness, occasionally

mixed with a bit of humor. The stories of her family’s personal ex-

periences of life in Norway during the Nazi occupation were heart

wrenching. After coming to America, they settled at Pekin. Her Fa-

ther decided to take his family to America so his children could re-

ceive an education as the educational system in Norway was de-

stroyed during the war.

We need to be reminded of all the blessings we have in America,

and our children and grandchildren need to hear them also. It is so

easy to become complacent with the blessings we have. We have all

the freedoms we need, we are free to worship God, and we have so

much more than the “basics” of life. And, we do not have an en-

emy’s military invading our community, destroying everything and

threatening our lives. If you ever have the opportunity to hear her

speak, please do yourself a big favor and take advantage of the time.

My grandparents came from Norway, but I had never heard the

story of the German occupation. It was a perfect time to hear it, just

before Memorial Day.

We are having a WELCA/Women’s Ministries meeting on June

7th. After that, you will hear of events planned for our women in the

upcoming worship bulletins and newsletter. Suggestions are always

appreciated!
