Message from the President

Thank you to the staff and the volunteers for putting on such a great Open House on September 5

th. From reports I have received

to date it was extremely successful.

To those of you who came out to meet our George VanderBurg (Assistant Minister for Seniors), MLA David Dorward, other MLA’s and their various staff, my thanks for representing SEESA and to hear what the future has to offer for Seniors in the Province of Alberta.

There is not much to report from the August Board Meeting as this was our first meeting after our summer recess and we concentrated mainly on the upcoming Open House and Ministers visit.

Last but not least, on behalf of the Board, I would like to congratulate Ellen “Jo” Berglund on being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Thank you & God Bless, John B. - President

Kimberly’s Korner

What a busy September we have had. As I write this the 4 Western Provinces Floor Curling Tournament is going full gusto! Steve, Dorothy and the planning committee did an amazing job of preparing to host this event. As per usual our SEESA volunteers stepped up and the event was run smoothly. All participants and spectators had a wonderful time. Congratulations to winners and all who had a hand in making this event successful!

We have had several requests for the ability to use debit or credit cards at the front desk for membership or class payments. We have explored this plan over the past couple of years and for the time being the cost of providing this service outweighs the convenience. We are, however looking into installing a ATM machine in the dining room hallway. This would be an option for those who wish to use plastic.

Kim, Shelley, Sheila Clifford-MacKay & I have just attended the seniors service conference “Grey Matters.” This conference was great information for all things senior. We attended sessions varying in subject from financial to brain fitness. It was also a great opportunity to meet others in the senior services field from all over our province as well as visitors from other parts of the country. The keynote speaker, Dorian Block, spoke on the works that are in place in New York City.

Now we gear up for our Fall Rummage Sale! The Fundraising Committee has been busily planning and scheduling this event. Cleaning bees start in early October. Fun, fun, fun! We have a new mini bus stopping at our centre! The

307 has been added through efforts of the Aging in Place project. The bus goes from Bonnie Doon to Capilano, stopping at SEESA in both directions as well as at Ottewell Place, Fulton Place and Gateway Manor!

OUTREACH NEWS

Elder abuse is a general term used to describe harmful acts toward an elderly adult, such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional or psychological abuse,

financial exploitation, and neglect, including self-neglect and medication abuse (Wikipedia, 2012). If you know of any such behaviors occurring you must report it to police, a social worker or a counselor. Elder abuse is often perpetrated by someone stronger and/or younger than the senior. It is often someone familiar to the elder. Please break the silence. Report elder abuse if you suspect something does not seem or feel right.

Different than elder abuse is senior to senior bullying. But come on, abuse is abuse. SEESA has a strict code of conduct for abusive behavior and verbal or physical attacks. If you have witnessed inappropriate conduct please write down what you remember, try to estimate as best you can the date and any other details. Send this in writing to Kimberly Buehler or the Board of Directors (12). If you have witnesses please include their names. SEESA wants to be a safe and fun place to come to and enjoy.

U of A Grad Student would love to hear from you! Research Participants Needed!

Are you aged 65 or older? Do you access governmental programs and/or services? If so, this study may be of interest to you! Hello! My name is Sophia. I am a graduate student at the University of Alberta, and I am conducting a research study on the information experiences of older adults. I am conducting individual interviews in order to learn about your experiences when you search for information on governmental programs and services as well as when you send information to governmental programs and services. This study seeks participants of age 65 and older, and who are fluent in English, to share their experiences. Interview duration is between 1 to 2 hour(s) (depending on your availability), and may be of great informational benefit to participants in terms of learning about various programs and services you may be eligible for as well as how to obtain the necessary information. Interviews will be conducted in private spaces (such as in a conference room at a public library) in order to maintain participant privacy and confidentiality. If you are interested in participating in this study then I would love to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Soup’s On! Welcome back to all who

have been busy with their summer activities and travels. Our cafeteria has resumed offering a daily ‘hot lunch’ special, and our summer menu has been tucked away until next year. One change to our regular lunch menu will be the addition of a daily hot/toasted sandwich. Also, we want to offer some healthy take-out snacks such

as veggies and dip or yogurt and granola. Any other suggestions are welcome.

To our new members: Our cafeteria is here to provide healthy, affordable meals for our members and guests. We offer gluten-free choices, and try to keep our food low in fat and sodium. We are especially proud of our hearty soups.

As always, thank you very, very much to our hard working volunteers, some of whom did double-duty over the summer while others were away. -Bev Clarke Kitchen Coordinator/Cook

MEMBER BASED

ORGANIZATIONS Why pay yearly dues?

SEESA Members, except Lifetime members,

pay SEESA a yearly fee of $30. We attend as

our personal calendars permit while SEESA

offers programs throughout the year. Our

membership year runs from January 1st to

December 31st with most of our members

opting to renew their memberships between

the months of November to January. Annual

dues may be paid at any time of the year;

however, up-to-date membership status is

required to participate in Clubs and Classes.

In the fall the new member or “$35 Deal”

runs from Autumn in the present year to

December 31st in the following year and is

offered to people who have never been a

SEESA member before. Once in a lifetime so

to speak.

SEESA members can be proud that the rent is

paid, utilities are paid, staff is paid, insurance

premiums, music licensing, upkeep and

repairs are paid throughout the year.

Members support the Association with yearly

dues so that when they wish to attend

programs, the building is open, the staff is

here and the programs are available. SEESA

and other membership-based organizations

do not have to close down because members

make the commitment to support their

organization yearly.

Let us all give ourselves a pat

on the back for making sure

that we support this very

worthwhile seniors activity

centre.

Membership Chair

September BIRTHDAY PARTY

Twenty-four birthday celebrants and their guests attended the party. Bev Munroe and Marv Wolfe were scheduled to entertain; however, Bev was unable to attend due to a bad back. We surely did miss him. Thankfully, Marvin was here on guitar and he brought along the legendary Joyce Smith and her husband, George, to fill in for Bev. We were thrilled! Joyce has a wonderful talent and was really appre-

ciated. These musicians had a great connection. Our own talented Dee Turner sang with Joyce for “You Are My Sunshine”. It made for a very “sunny” day. Get well soon, Bev.

Door Prizes were awarded to Jean Yahodenko and Mike Coupal. Bernice Armstrong and Eugene Warawa won Wednesday Lite Supper Gift Certificates.

Regular Birthday party volunteers: Shirley, Zygun, Flo Lucas, Edith Howard, Bernice MacRae, Vi Ponton and Anne Trimble were joined by Lois Brosseau this time around. Thank you all for making the parties such a celebration.

SEESA’s Secret Sauce

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 23 - 25 SEESA’s renowned Accidental Drama Group will present two brand-new plays. World Premieres: one a Melodrama, Evil Meets its Master, in which Love cunningly triumphs over Adversity. The other, The Conscience of Clarence Clarenton - Browne, is a succulent presentation in which a would-be murderer is tormented by his own conscience in the form of the ghost of his recent victim, and finally cooked by his own imaginings.

Not only are these plays made public for the first time, but they are written by playwright, Ken Gough. Who knows? Perhaps these are the early steps towards an upward career which will reach the heights of the theatrical world!

These presentations can truthfully be said to be not Off-Broadway, but indeed, Off-Off-Off Broadway happenings. Come and see what happens on the SEESA stage this year. Tickets:
