National Platform

• Digital spend controls 2014 required all e-Learning

hosted on external sites be moved to one national

platform

• Previously known as project Blofield it has now

changed to HEE e-LfH Learning Platform Upgrade

• Many users in KSS have volunteered to participate in

this

• The deadline for completion is 31/03/2015. After this a

LETB migration manager will be appointed to work

directly with LETBs and e-LfH. They will then plan the

migration of local content over to this new national

platform in the early part of the next financial year

• Starting in a Hospital as a Junior Doctor is a bewildering

and stressful period in your career!

• Common tasks are often more difficult than they

should be and include:

– Requesting many different tests

– Making referrals to many different specialities

– Using hospital guidelines that are difficult to find

• More time (and stress) is often spent finding out how to

do such tasks rather than actually doing the tasks

themselves.

ESR – The Future of Self Service

• Payslips and P60s should replicate the paper payslip exactly

• Any comments entered into the Self Service application to

support requests for change (for example) must also be

transferred and recorded in the core solution for reference and

audit purposes

• Trusts will be heavily involved with Pilot and Test sites for the

new functionality being selected now. They will work closely

with NHS Central Team and IBM over the coming months

project

• The library service received £20,000 for a project exploring the practicalities of loaning mobile devices in a secure IT environment to access e-learning and educational resources.

• Some devices would be configured for internet access through the NHS network (e.g. requiring a SUSSEX login)

• Others would be set up for open access WiFi, avoiding the N3 internet connections which would allow a greater range of software versions, Apps and use of social media.

• Devices could be borrowed for use in the libraries, workplace or home. Policies and processes would be developed to manage this securely.

• For use with Open access WiFi we chose

Tablets - because they could be reset in 2

minutes. Ipads are not supported by our IT

department; equipment for automatic loaning,

recharging and resetting of mobile devices is

too expensive (very successful in academic

sector)

• We planned NOT to have Office software on

the Tablets (adds to library staff time resetting

devices) but this proved unpopular with users

within the libraries.

• Introduction of “safeboot” as a requirement on all mobile devices = not suitable for multiple users; lengthy resets by IT after each loan so a re-think was required. Notebooks are still not in use.

• ESHT IT department are working on another solution. Direct access to ESR (password only at this stage) for multiple use, ease of access and ensuring correct software. The plan is to loan to ward areas in collaboration with L&D but this depends on available space and network points.

Steps identified

1. Evidence gather – what has/hasn’t worked for other libraries or other organisations? Keep doing this as the picture changes rapidly

2. Scope the problems in your own environment (ask IT, L&D, IG, HCAs)

3. Ensure your IT department are able to support the project, and involve Information Governance

4. With advice from IT, choose the mobile devices that will work in your environments – try first with a few, and factor in replacement costs and the inevitable damage

5. Plan for at least 18 months before things embed: considerable time is needed to agree practicalities and get clear processes and staff engagement

6. Identify the impact on the overall infrastructure (network capacity)

7. You will need a variety of solutions and devices. The most difficult to achieve will be mobile devices for multiple use on a secure network
