To recount the contributionof the three awardees, Harini,born in a famous family ofUdupi entered the hearts ofyouth as heroine in

Some of the other filmsare : “Sati Sukanya”,“Gali Gopura” all of whichspeak for her natural portrayal.

Anjali is a very senioractress of the Tamil screen,known for her stellar roles inPouranic films like “LavaKusha”, “Bhakta Prahlada”.She has quite a few awards toher credit.

Jamuna is a popularartiste of the Telugu screen,portraying a variety of roles.Special mention must be madeof her acting in “RatnagiriRahasya” a popular Kannadamovie. The hit song “AmaraMadhura Prema” is stillremembered for its soulfulrendition.

Padma BhushanDr.B.Saroja Devi who hasacted in more than 170 filmsin four languages,( Kannada,Tamil, Telugu & Hindi) wasoffered to act in movies whileshe was singing at a functionat the age of thirteen, but sherefused. At the age of 17 shedebutted with the Kannada film‘Mahakavi Kalidasa’ which atonce brought her name &fame.

She became an icon inKarnataka by her role of‘Kitturu Rani Chennamma’ in1962. This film won NationalAward. By that time she hadalready acted in Tamil &Telugu films. In Tamil she isknown as ‘KannadathuPaingkili’ (Kannada’s Parrot).

She acted opposite topstalwarts like HonnappaBhagavathar, Dr. Rajkumar ,Kalyan Kumar, Uday Kumar,Gemini Ganeshan, M G R,

Sivaji Ganeshan, N T R,Akkineni Nageshwara Rao,Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor& Bharat Bhushan.

She has served asChairperson of the KarnatakaFilm Development Corporationas also Chairperson ofKanteerava Studios, Bangalore.She has engaged herself insocial services & philanthropicactivities and has institutedendowments and awards inmemory of her late husbandSri Harsha.

Anjali Devi

Anjali Devi (born 24August 1927) is a veteranTelugu actress and producer.She is well known for hermythological role as Sita inLava Kusha and roles inmovies like Suvarna Sundariand Anarkali.

She hails fromPeddapuram, East Godavaridistrict in Andhra Pradesh andlater settled in Chennai. She

was a drama artiste beforeentering into movies. Her debutwas as Lohitashva in RajaHarishchandra in 1936.Her first movie as heroinewas Kashtajeevi by L.V. PrasadShe later acted in more than350 Telugu movies and in afew Tamil and Kannada filmsas heroine.

She married P. AdinarayanaRao, a music director, in 1948.She, along with him, producedmany Telugu films under thebanner of Anjali Pictures.She acted in Lava Kusha, amilestone film and the firstcolour film in Telugu filmindustry in 1963. She actedin various roles like damsel,angel, dancer, demon,goddess, traditionalwoman and later as mother.Her granddaughter Saila Raois also an actress.

Organisations like Daatuwhich are engaged in creativeactivity of revitalizing folk artssuch as puppetry, deservehigh praise and encouragement,observed JusticeB.V. Nagaratna, Justice of theState High Court.

Inaugurating a display ofPuppets organized by Daatu forthe Bhavan at its ESV hall on

May 8. Justice B.V. Nagaratnasaid that the puppets on displaywere full of life and very closeto reality. She noted that the

pieces were drawn fromvarious places in India andabroad.

Referring to the creativityin making puppets andrepresenting, she said thepuppet artists must not only

have the knack of making thepuppets to suit the characters ina story, but have an idea of themythology or epics underlyingthem. They must be aware ofthe values which are sought tobe displayed through puppetry,besides penning the dialogueand music that accompany thepresentation. Hence, it is aconfluence of various facetsof art, the learned judge added.

Referring to a briefinteraction she had with thepuppet artists, she said” I was

informed that there is notmuch support from thegovernment agencies or othersfor the artists. It is high timethat the state as also thecorporate sectors and otherpatrons of art lent their supportand encourage the puppetartists so that the traditioncan be kept alive and greaterinnovation can be broughtabout in this field.

“Once again, I thank theorganization for inviting meto this puppet display,” sheconcluded.

“Yellow Frames” wasthe theme of an Indo-AmericanFilm Festival organized by theBhavan’s American Corner inassociation with its principals,the Bangalore Kendra of theBhavan and the US ConsulateGeneral, Chennai.

The two-day festival at theKhincha auditorium on May 14and 15, purported to highlightthe rise of Indian milieu crossover cinema in the West.

Yet he asserted thatmeditation was hard work,demanding the highest form ofdiscipline, not conformity, notimitation, not obedience, but adiscipline that comes fromconstant awareness.

The talk was followed by aquestion-answer session whichevoked considerable interest.

“One who does not knowwhat meditation is, is like ablind man in a world of brightcolour, shadows and movinglight”, averred Sri KabirJaithirtha, Director, RajghatBesant School, Varanasi. Hewas speaking for the Bhavan’sR. Nagaraja Rao Endowmentlecture on May 12.

Basing his talk on thesubject “ Meditation in the lightof Jiddu Krishnamurti’sTeachings”, Sri Jaithirthaexplained that a meditativemind is silent, not the silence ofthought or that of a still eveningwhen all images, words orperceptions have ceased.Rather, this meditative mind isreligious, religion that has nottouched the temple, church orany chants. The religious mind,he said, is an explosion of love,love that knows no separation.
