Almost 40 musicians from the Blaskapelle Gemmingen, a traditional wind band from the South of Germany, will be touring the Great Lakes area from August 14, to September 2, 2014. The musicians are very much looking forward not only to playing at concerts, but also to becoming acquainted with the culture and country of the United States. Through the international language of music they are hoping to touch the hearts of the American
audiences and to promote understanding. Undoubtedly it will be an eventful tour with abundant interesting and amicable encounters.
This document is dedicated with heart-felt thanks to all our friends who have made it possible for the Blaskapelle to do a group tour, to the host families and audiences for the warm hospitality shown to the musicians on their US tour.

The Blaskapelle Gemmingen has been around for 53 years (since 1961). Gemmingen itself was founded in 769. Its history is closely tied with the history of the Barons of Gemmingen and their castles in both Gemmingen and Stebbach. In 1925, Stebbach was incorporated into Gemmingen as well as the township Streichenberg. In 2011, the Gemmingen wind orchestra celebrated its 50-year anniversary with a party that lasted for several days.
In the early years, between 1961 and 1969, the local 16-26 member church band developed into the Blaskapelle Gemmingen, which plays an established role in the cultural life of the city today.
Who we are
5
The Blaskapelle Gemmingen’s musical repertoire includes everything from symphonic brass, easy listening, Bohemian-Moravian music, “Guggemusigg” (best described as a cross between big band and noise machine) to Swing-Rock-Pop and Big Band dance music.
In 1969, the wind orchestra was an instrumental part of the Gemmingen community’s 1200 year anniversary. The event marks the founding of the offi cial band association under the name Blaskapelle Gemmingen.
In the following years, the Blaskapelle Gemmingen distinguished itself under the conductors Otto Kotsch senior, Otto Kotsch junior, Friedrich Hofner und Werner Werosta through its participation in several wind orchestra competitions at the district and national levels, in which the band received several prizes and awards, as well as through appearances on television and radio.
Today, the Blaskapelle Gemmingen is made up of several ensembles of diverse styles, such as its wind orchestra and youth orchestra, its Schlosspark Musikanten, as well as its “Guggemusigg” and big band.
