Lives of the Saints St. Margaret of Hungary was vowed to God even before she was born. She was a daughter of King Bela IV & his wife Mary Lascaris. The extravagances of the penances she undertook as a Dominican nun may have shortened her young life. She was born at a time when the Tatars were invading Hungary. The king & queen offered to dedicate their child to the Church if Hungary was saved from the invaders. It was, so Margaret was brought to the Dominican convent at Vesprem at three years of age. Later, Bela & Mary built a convent for their daughter on an island in the Danube near Buda, & when she was three years old, made her profession. She was very intense in her prayer life and penance. She worked very hard for the relief of the poor & sick, died at the very young age of twenty eight. She was canonised by Pope Pius XII in 1943. St. Branwalader honoured in Cornwall, Dorset and Jersey, was a Celtic monk of probably Weish origin and may have been a bishop. Little is known about him, but he worked with St Samson ( 490 - 565) in Cornwall and in the Channel Islands and possibly in Brittany. Samson established a monastery in Dol, Brittany. In Cornwall he is called St Breward and St Breward's Well is also there. It was visited by sufferers with inflamed eyes and other ailments. Branwalader is remembered in Jersey in the parish name, St Brelade, in the south of the island. St. Fabian had been pope for fourteen years when martyred under Decius (Roman Emperor from 249-251) in 250. The Decian persecution resulted from an edict issued in 250 by the Emperor Decius ordering everyone in the Roman Empire to perform a sacrifice to the Roman gods and the well-being of the Emperor. This became known as the seventh persecution. St. Sebastian possibly a soldier martyred in the persecution of Diocletian (Roman Emperor from 284-305). Since the days of Emperor Augustus, there existed the imperial cult - the deification of the emperor - when Jews & Christians refused to consider any emperor a god. In 303 Diocletian ordered the destruction of all churches & Christian texts. Leading members of the clergy were arrested & ordered to sacrifice or die. Christians who refused were tortured & killed. St. Agnes, aged thirteen years, who chose to die for God and refused to worship the Roman gods, was denounced and condemned to death. Her body was buried in a catacomb a short distance from Rome, near the Via Nomentana, where the church Sant'Agnese fouri le mura was built in her honour. St. Vincent of Saragossa, Three martyred deacons were given special honour in the early centuries of the Church: Stephen in Palestine, Lawrence in Rome & Vincent in Spain. Vincent is the earliest Spanish martyr whose name is known to us. Vincent served as a deacon to St Valerius, bishop of Saragossa. His fellow Spaniard, Prudentius (348 - 405), wrote a poem commemorating his life & death, telling how he was brought to trial along with his bishop. Valerius had a speech impediment, so Vincent spoke for both. His fearless manner so angered the governor that Vincent was tortured and killed at Valencia, while Valerius was sent into exile. Prudentius's poem and four homilies preached by St Augustine on his feast day show that Vincent's fame had spread "throughout the Roman Empire and wherever you find the name of Christian". Though his tomb was in Valencia, he was honoured at Saragossa. In the eighth century the city of Oviedo in northern Spain grew up around a church dedicated to St Vincent. St. Ildephonsus of Toledo reflects the growth of Christianity in Toledo, Spain, at the beginning of the seventh century. Ildephonsus is a Gothic name, which later evolved into the Spanish Alfonso. He was a Visigoth, a tribe of Germanic peoples, who came into Spain in the sixth century. He was born of a noble family in Toledo, the then capital of the Visigoth kingdom. His youth was a time when Christianity rapidly developed in Spain. In 589, Recared, the King of the Visigoths, converted his people from Arianism to Christianity and Ildephonsus's uncle Eugenius became Archbishop of Toledo. Ildephonsus became a Benedictine monk at Agalia, near Toledo and became abbot there in 653. In that capacity he attended the Councils of Toledo in 653 and 655. He was elected bishop of Toledo in 657 in succession to his uncle.

A number of speakers spoke of the immense contribution Fr. Paul made to our St. MacCullin’s Parish in his more than five years as our Parish Priest. Fr Paul expressed his deep appreciation for the wonderful generosity of parishioners. The thanksgiving Mass was followed by a wonderful reception for hundreds of parishioners in the school hall.

surprised, they are a mark of the generosity you have shown
