MODERN HEBREW II
Since Hebrew is written in the Hebrew alphabet,
to read Hebrew you need to associate the sounds
with a dierent system o symbols than the Latin
alphabet. A complete listing o the Hebrew alphabet
can be ound starting on page 4. This is or yourinormation only: you will not need the list to be
able to read Hebrew since all o the instruction is on
the audio.
In Hebrew you read rom right to let, the opposite
o English. The irst ew pages in this booklet arein English and should be read rom let to right;
however, the pages teaching Hebrew, starting with
page 4, should be read rom right to let.
In Modern Hebrew, the major vowel sounds are:
ah, eh, ee, o, and oo. Some vowels are represented
by more than one sign. The reason or this is that
in ancient times there were more vowel sounds than
there are today and the various orms o transcription
have been maintained even when there is no sound
dierence. And there is also a punctuation vowel, called schva, which is sometimes silent.
There are twenty-two consonants in the Hebrew
alphabet, written with thirty-one letters. As in the
case o vowels, there are some letters which in

Modern Hebrew sound alike, but which originally
were dierent sounds. This is especially true in the
case o some guttural sounds which are no longer
pronounced gutturally in Modern Hebrew.
There are two letters which are silent and serve
as vowel carriers. There are two letters which have
a dierent sound when a dot is added. There are
ive letters which have two orms: one orm when
written at the beginning or middle o the word, and
another orm when written at the end o the word.Having dierent letters or the same sound may
cause diiculties in spelling, but not in reading.
Modern Hebrew script does not normally
include vowels and consonant dots. These are only
included or beginning readers, in poetry, and in
the Old Testament, and are otherwise used only when
it is necessary to avoid ambiguities o meaning. As
o the second grade in elementary school, Israelis
are able to read without vowels, by guessing the
correct pronunciation. In this booklet, the vowelsand consonant dots are included in the irst eighteen
lessons. We have not included the dots, called
dagesh chazak, in cases where these dots do not
change the pronunciation.

There are twenty Reading Lessons. The irst
iteen Reading Lessons are a review rom Level I.
Theyll give you a solid introduction to reading
Modern Hebrew. The inal ive Lessons include
letters between a husband and wie and two workcolleagues. In Lessons Nineteen and Twenty you
will be introduced to reading Modern Hebrew
without vowel markers and consonant dots. To help
ease this transition, weve included the same lesson
on the ollowing page with the vowel markers and
consonant dots. It is important, however, to reerto these pages only ater making every attempt at
reading these words, as you will see them printed in
Israel without the markers and dots.
These lessons are printed in the Hebrew square
type. You will note that there are no capital letters
in Hebrew and western style punctuation is used.
The recorded portion o the reading materials or
Hebrew II will be ound at the end o the program.
You can do the Readings when it is most convenientor you, either with the units, or entirely ater
completing the ull 30 units. Full instructions on
how to proceed are in the recording.
