New STEM and Outdoor Badges Enrich Girl Scout Programming

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has released 23 new badges in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and the outdoors, areas girls are not typically encouraged to explore outside of Girl Scouting.

The badges will debut on the Volunteer Toolkit (VTK), making it more accessible than ever to unleash the power of every girl.

New Programming in STEM and the OutdoorsThrough hands-on and age-appropriate experiences for girls as young as five, Girl Scouts is both enhancing the important outdoor opportunities the organization is known for and addressing the lack of exposure many girls have to STEM.

In fact, Girl Scouts are almost twice as likely as non–Girl Scouts to participate in STEM (60 percent versus 35 percent) and outdoor activities (76 percent versus 43 percent).

With the introduction of the new badges, which marks the largest programming roll-out in almost a decade, Girl Scouts can create algorithms, design robots and race cars, go on environmentally conscious camping trips, collect data in the great outdoors, try their hand at engineering, and so much more. GSUSA created programming that included contributions from many notable organizations.

Collaborators include the STEM-focused Code.org, GoldieBlox, SciStarter, Society of Women Engineers, and WGBH/Design Squad Global, as well as the outdoor-focused Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.

When you log in to plan your new year with your girls, you’ll notice new badge and Journey options for every grade level.

The Brownie Quest (Brownies) and Agent of Change (Juniors) Journeys will be added, as well as Cybersecurity, NASA Space Science, DIY Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Stewardship badges for Daisies, Brownies and Juniors.

Cadette, Senior and Ambassador troops will now have access to the Think Like a Programmer and Think Like an Engineer Journeys, as well as Robotics, College Prep (Ambassadors), and Environmental Stewardship badges.

You will also notice some new functionality enhancements for the 2019 membership year. For one, setting up your troop year will be much easier.

The new “Explore” tab will let you “Select your own” and use “Pre-selected Tracks” to jump start the Year Plan for your troop. New badge and award visuals will allow you to see what your girls will earn before you make a selection. Also coming in July are additional pre-populated badge tracks. The single existing badge Year Plan was so popular that we’re now rolling out several new badge tracks across all grade levels, Daisy through Ambassador.

Download the PDF Grade Level Year Plan overviews to see descriptions of each Year Plan available by level (Petal/Leaves, Badge, or Journey) and which badges, journey awards, etc. are earnable with each populated Year Plan.

If you think you’re not getting the most out of the VTK as a volunteer and want to learn more about it or be guided through the new features and content, join us for one of our upcoming VTK webinars! Dates and times can be found on the council calendar. Register for one today!

When you log in to the VTK for the first time in July, you will also notice that badge images are now active buttons that show you the requirements and steps to earn each badge. Simply click on a badge to quickly and easily see what it will take for your girls to earn it!

Some additional notes for Troop Co-Leaders: • In order to access the VTK for the 2019 membership

year, you must have an active 2019 Girl Scout membership and be registered/renewed in a Troop Co-Leader volunteer role.

• Any Troop Co-Leader who has not renewed their membership will have lost access to the VTK on July 1. This will be restored once a 2019 membership and relevant screening and training has been completed, as active volunteers are defined as being fully screened and trained. Be sure to stay on top of keeping your membership active and your screenings and required trainings up to date so that you can make valuable use of planning time in the VTK.

• Troop Financial Reports are due by September 15. Therefore it is important that you maintain access to the VTK, where these will be submitted for the first time this year.

Safety Activity checkpointsSafety Activity Checkpoints is a resource that provides safety standards and guidelines for GSUSA- approved activities. Safety Activity Checkpoints include activity specifications, necessary safety gear, age, experience guidelines, girl/adult ratio, travel specifications, activity progression, presence of certified instructors, helpful links for planning, and tips on how to include girls with disabilities.

New this year is a chart called “Activities at a Glance”. Safety Activity Checkpoints 2018 provides a chart for the activities, called “Activities at a Glance,” as an easy reference grid with respect to grade-level specifications for activity participation, council approval requirements, and instructor credentialing (i.e., required certification/experience).

Council Approval Requirement. At the top of each activity page you will see a field indicating whether your council’s approval is required to perform the activity. There are three categories for this field: Required, May Be Required, and Not Required.

The council program department is currently working on determining which activities will be allowed, and what parameters will be in place at the council level for those activities that GSUSA has designated with “May Be Required.” As these have been reviewed and determined, Safety Activity Checkpoints will be updated online and announced through council publications. If you have questions about activities please email [email protected].

Be sure to always check Safety Activity Checkpoints prior to planning any activity with girls. Utilize the checkpoints as a guide when planning out your adventure with your troop. Safety Activity Checkpoints for a specific activity can also be printed off and shared with parents when necessary.

Highlights from the 2018 Safety Activity Checkpoints

• GSUSA has newly designated that all overnight travel as “Council Approval: Required”. Council staff are creating this new process and will have information soon. Troop Co-Leaders should be on the lookout for an email that explains this new process.

• Personal overnight accommodations for hire (Airbnb, VRBO, Flipkey, etc.) are not permitted for Girl Scout trips.

• Ride-share services like Uber, Lyft, and Curb are not allowed to transport girls.

• When planning transportation for trips, keep in mind that large 15-passenger vans have been flagged as unsafe by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and, therefore, are not permitted for transporting girls.

Volunteer EssentialsBe on the lookout for the newest edition of Volunteer Essentials.

Troop Co-Leaders and Service Unit Managers will be notified as soon as it has been made available online. This resource is a volunteer’s “encyclopedia” to all things Girl Scouts. Have a question about travel, troop finances or Girl Scout Safety Guidelines? Check Volunteer Essentials! You can find this information (and so much more!) in the guide.

If you still have questions about something after consulting Volunteer Essentials, please contact a member of our Care Team for further assistance at [email protected].

If you have a hard copy of last year’s Volunteer Essentials, please be sure to replace it with the 2018/2019 edition so you always have the most current information available.

Financial ReportsAs a reminder, Troop Financial Reports are due to the council no later than September 30th. Because the membership year runs from October 1- September 30, reports should be submitted through the VTK as close to the deadline as possible to ensure the whole 2017-2018 membership year is accounted for. Troops are only allowed one submission through the VTK per membership year, so do not submit before you are ready. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact a member of our Care Team for support.

Service Unit Financial Reports are due no later than September 15th, and should be submitted through an online link that will be provided by our Finance Department. As with Troop Financial Reports, SU Financial Reports should cover the entire Girl Scout membership year, from October 1- September 30.

RENEW TODAY!

School AssembliesWith the passing of TN SB 2098, enacted by the 109th General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, we are excited about the opportunity that this piece of legislation offers our organization in fulfilling our mission.

In summary, this bill requires school principals to allow Girl Scouts Heart of the South, as a patriotic society, to speak during a school assembly for 10 minutes. This bill also allows the opportunity to encourage thousands of girls to become our next young women of courage, confidence, and character, but we need assistance in reaching that many girls. If you work at a school, have school-aged children, or have a good relationship with your local schools, we encourage you to reach out to us to share your connections and/or interest in supporting our efforts to have an assembly at your school. Please contact us at 800-624-4185, or [email protected].

While the state of Mississippi has not yet passed similar legislation, our staff is hard at work to make this happen. In the meantime, we are committed to offering assemblies at as many elementary schools in Mississippi as possible. Please let us know if you can provide any assistance in scheduling or hosting assemblies at schools in your area. We try to host the majority of our assemblies in August and September, so we are eager to start getting these on our calendars and can use your support in doing so. Please contact our Care Team at [email protected] or 800-624-4185.

September 15 & 16, 2018 - For the Kingdom - Memphis, TNWe’re looking for upcoming

8th - 12th grade girls who want to be agents of change for their generation.Come join other girl leaders to explore

new ways to view leadership at the Kaleidoscope National Leadership

Conference Septemer 15 & 16, 2018.The Kaleidoscope Conference seeks

to help create a generation of inclusive, culturally-competent leaders who know how to work together to make the world

a better place.

The facts for women, and even more so for women of color, paint a picture of inequality. Women on average are paid 20% less than men. If you break the pay gap down by race and ethnicity, it is even worse: Black women are paid 37% less, and Hispanic women are paid 46% less. With values of inclusion, equity, and excellence, we seek to change the current view of leadership, providing positive role models so all young women can see that success is attainable.

During the conference, we will explore topics of diversity and inclusion, implicit biases, perceptions of women and people of color in the media, and more. Girls will have the opportunity to hear from female leaders in the fields of STEM, business, politics, and media. By teaching girls networking skills and resiliency, we hope they leave this conference prepared to demand a seat at the table. A fully updated conference schedule will be available on our website in early August. Check back soon for more details!

Welcome to our annual Fall Product Program! This short, fun and engaging program is a great way for girls to learn important life skills and to earn money for their Girl Scout activities early in the troop year.

The nuts and candy are delicious and designed specifically for the Girl Scouts, and the magazine program is a great opportunity to renew existing subscriptions or suggest friends and family try out that new magazine they’ve been considering while supporting Girl Scouts. New this year are a wide variety of candles, along with the designer Tervis® tumblers and waterbottles, and organic veggie growing kits! There really is something for everyone!

One of the most important elements of the program is the opportunity for girls to set and achieve goals while earning money for troop activities. Like the iconic Girl Scout Cookie Program, the Fall Product Program teaches important life skills including goal setting, decision-making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.

Thank you for supporting your girl and Girl Scouts through participating in the Fall Product Program. Every dollar raised stays right here in our council to provide quality council events, provide training for volunteers, maintain three camp properties and provide service to our members.

Money Earning Guidelines for Girls, Service Units and AdultsHelping girls plan, budget, earn, and manage money is an integral part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Funds to carry-out troop plans are primarily provided by council-sponsored product sales and troop dues. When supplemental funds are needed, additional council-approved money earning activities can be utilized.

Read more about Money Earning Guidelines online.

Girl Scout Daisies are not allowed to participate in money-earning activities outside of council-sponsored product sales.

Money Earning by GirlsGirls should earn funds by providing a service or product. They should also be learning while earning, even if they just learn they have to work hard and as a team to meet their goals.

Individual girls can participate in money earning activities to fund Girl Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold Award projects, to attend council-sponsored trips, summer camp and events, or participate in GSUSA Destinations. If a girl changes troops, earned funds transfer with the girl, but does not go to the girl if she leaves Girl Scouts.

Money Earning by Service UnitsService units may hold money-earning activities for service unit projects and events. Adults involved in planning and hosting a money-earning activity must be registered members of GSUSA and have position agreement, appropriate trainings, and background checks required for their volunteer position.

Money Earning by AdultsAdults may ask for donations of cash, gift cards or supplies from companies that do not exceed a value of $100. Any request over $100 must first be approved by GSHS Fund Development department. Cash gifts over $250, must be made payable to Girl Scouts Heart of the South with a note that the money is designated to the troop or service unit. A check for the full amount will be issued back to the troop or service unit from the council. A Gift Acceptance Form must be completed and submitted to GSHS fund development department.

Adults requesting funds or items must be registered with GSUSA and may not represent the council when making a request - only ask on behalf of the troop or service unit. If the company requests documentation, such as 501(c)(3) or verification of involvement with GSHS, contact [email protected]

An adult can choose to host a product demonstration party (Pampered Chef, Premier, Avon) or bunco tournament and make a donation to a troop or service unit, but the event cannot be marketed as a fundraiser for Girl Scouts and girls cannot be involved.

Some companies make charitable donations to organizations where their employees volunteer their time and/or match cash donations. Contact the GSHS fund development department if your company requires verification or to discuss how your company’s donation should be designated. Donor designated funds contributed through a United Way campaign will be honored.
