HEARTS ON FIRE

Where Faith is Known,

Lived, & Shared

ASK and ANSWER

Pentecost is coming June 8, when we celebrate Christ’s sending the

Holy Spirit upon His disciples. If I too am a disciple of Christ, I must

also consider how the gifts received at Pentecost apply to me. We will

consider this over the next few weeks.

Q. What are the gifts of the Holy Spirit and how do they help me

in my life?

A. Without God’s help, it is impossible for us to find our way to

God. That is why the Holy Spirit furnishes God-like

enhancements to our soul that render us sensitive and

responsive to the guidance of God. Through these refinements,

called the gifts of the Holy Spirit, God comes close to us in our

inability, raising up our natural powers so that we become

especially docile and receptive to the Spirit’s promptings. . .

These gifts are a light that illumines our mind, a voice that

points out the path for us to follow, a fire that enkindles our

heart, an embrace that moves our will to do the good set forth

by the Spirit. Thanks to the Spirit’s gifts, we stand ready for

the Lord’s initiatives, eager to comply—easily, promptly, and

generously—with every movement of divine grace.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are designed to counteract anything that

would tempt us to doubt or distrust how much God wants us to be one

with Him: [Fear of the Lord, Piety, Knowledge, Fortitude, Counsel,

Understanding, and Wisdom]. Beginning with the first gift, God

contends with our crippling fear. He responds with the gift of fear of the

Lord by which we are overawed by a sense of His greatness and of our

longing for Him. It makes us fear ever losing One who loves us so

much. And we reject anything that would imperil our relationship with

God. Peter John Cameron, O.P., Magnificat

Come, O blessed spirit of Holy Fear, penetrate my inmost heart, that I

may set you, my Lord and God, before my face forever; help me to shun

all things that can offend You and make me worthy to appear before the

pure eyes of Your Divine Majesty in heaven, where You live and reign in

the unity of the Blessed Trinity, world without end. Amen.

CSA Minute

Engaged couples across the Archdiocese of Detroit have been preparing

for summer nuptials through marriage preparation programs.

Catholic marriage is a calling from Got to a shared vocation of life and

love. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the archdiocesan

Office for Marriage and Family Life to assemble marriage preparation

programs designed to help couples build a foundation for this sacred

union. These programs provide valuable opportunities, away from the

distractions of wedding preparations, for couples to prayerfully discuss

their future life together.

The office also offers support services and programs that enrich and

nurture people in every stage of the family life cycle, beyond the

newlywed stage.

For more information about CSA-funded ministries, programs, and

services, go to www.AOD.org.
