I don’t know about our readers butI do know that I needed a littleextra help getting back into routine following an indulgentEaster long weekend and the successive short weeks!

There is a growing obesity epidemic inIpswich and the world with rates ofoverweight and obesity increasingsteadily since the 1980’s. This fact waswell publicised in 2010 with a state-wide survey naming Ipswich the‘fattest in SEQ’. While we as a city havemoved away from this frightening title, experts are still concerned about children meeting dietary guidelines forfruit and vegetable intake.

In Queensland 698 900 (66.7%) childrenmeet the dietary guidelines for fruit intake (2-3 serves per day), 48 400(4.6%) meet the dietary guidelines forvegetable intake (3-6 serves, dependenton age) and only 45 300 (4.3%) met theguidelines for both fruit and vegetableintake2.

However, in Ipswich only 8% of IpswichResidents eat 5 serves of vegetableseach day while up to 60% eat 2 servesof fruit1.

We asked Liz what motivated her toraise her daughter with health and nutrition as a priority.

“Ensuring Alyssa eats well ensures thatlife as a Mum is a little easier – minimalbehavioural issues due to minimalpreservatives, colourings and sugar. Shegets a better night’s sleep which meansshe is waking up fresh and energetic.”

“I think involving children in choosingthe foods and getting them to assist inmeal preparations is key to teachingthe young about healthy eating andidentifying good food from bad. Introducing children to a wide range of healthy foods at a young age is definitely the way to go.”

“Personally, I can’t afford regular takeout options and people believe thathealthy eating is expensive when reallyif your shop consists of a no junk and alarge range of fruit and vegetables – it’scheaper!

“While her school provides healthy options for tuckshop and does touch onhealthy eating to ensure minimal ‘badfood’ is packed into lunch boxes, theydon’t spend a lot of time teaching children this imperative information.”

Australian Curriculum, Assessment andReporting Agency states that there are12 focus areas in the National

Curriculum for Health and Physical Education, only 1 of which relates tofood and nutrition.

The National Curriculum requiresschools to complete 80 hours of Healthand Physical Activity Education peryear, this equates to 2 hours a week. Food Nutrition comprises only 8.3% ofthe Health and Physical Education curriculum, less than 10 minutes a weekor 6.64 hours a year.

Things I do to teach Alyssa• Get her involved in food preparation• Get her involved in shopping and choosing what she wants to eat

• Set boundaries for bad foods, events, movies

• Visit a healthy café as a treat• Making juices and smoothies is our favourite thing to do!

• Bake with her

Start healthyeating habits

at an early age“The fun healthy activities we

do together help teach her aboutnutritious foods without

complicating and over explaining it.”

Mother of now two very adorable children, Bronwyn Geck says that although exercise through pregnancy “is hard, it doesn’t get any harder, it juststays the same hard”.

We managed to interview this activemum after her second gym class of themorning, the day before her new littlebundle of joy was due to be born.

During her first pregnancy with sonCarter, Bronwyn said that she was “unfit, inconsistent and unmotivated” with exercise. Second time round with babyMakenzie, Bronwyn was much more active and healthier.

“I’ve been going to the gym about 6times a week” “I did Pump and Balancethis morning but my favourite class isCombat”.

During pregnancy there were some challenges and modifications she had to make to move safely but said “I’m surprised how much I can still do, I justlisten to my body and modify”.

Bronwyn explained that exercising whilepregnant is hard, for obvious reasons asthere was a baby inside her. “Some daysyou are tired and unmotivated but it’simportant just to get out and come tothe gym. You get through the warmupand just end up getting through it all”

The importance of goals even whilepregnant is something Bronwyn strongly

believes in. “I find it fun to focus on different fitness goals. Recently I’ve beenfocusing on strengthening my shouldersand upper body”.

During her pregnancy, Bronwyn did havea few people question her and ask“should you be here?”. Despite thesecomments Bronwyn didn’t give up on heractive lifestyle.

Her Obstetrician was informed throughout and when she asked himabout exercising she said “he was overthe moon when I told him I wanted tokeep exercising”. “He said it was great, tokeep going. He said to do more exerciseand even add Pilates to my routine. Hewas very “Pro Exercise”, It was so good tohave so much support from him”.

The gym staff and members gave Bronwyn a lot of additional support too.One of her instructors was also pregnantand a few weeks ahead. Having seen herand other pregnant women in the gym“normalised it and made it easier”.

When asked to give advice to other pregnant women Bronwyn said to “cometo the gym regardless, even if you’retired. You will feel so much better afterwards”. “Just keep coming, when youskip a few it’s harder to get back into it”.

During most pregnancies, expectingmothers are encouraged to stay activefor as long as possible. It helps with general health of both the mother andbaby. Exercise throughout pregnancy iseven known to improve recovery postpregnancy. However, every pregnancy isdifferent and it’s important to seek professional advice and as Bronwynsaid, always “listen to your body”.

You’ll soon see her back in the gym eightweeks post pregnancy when she canbring along her new one to child minding at the gym while she works out.

Bronwyn said that she found her secondpregnancy was a lot easier with exercise.“I found I had less back pain, my bloodpressure was better, I felt healthier andhappier” she said.

Juicing your fruit and vegetableshas become increasingly popular in recent years. The reasons people like juicing arequite varied. Some feel it willlead to weight loss, others believe it gives more energy andsome like to juice fruit and vegas a convenient tasty drink andan alternative to commerciallyproduced juices. So, whetheryou like the occasional freshjuice, or you chose to drink it aspart of a longer-term detox diet, does it contribute to a healthydiet?

Whilst I don’t promote the useof juices for long-term dietaryreplacement of fresh fruit and

vegetables, the occasional juicemay be a refreshing and tastyalternative to soft drink and cordials. There are a few waysyou can juice, these include:

Cold pressed juicer – masticating juicer that works bycrushing the fruit and veg before separating the juice fromsolid plant fibre.

Centrifuge juicer – works on arotational blade system thatpushes fruit and veg through astrainer to separate juice frompulp.

Blended juices - no separationwith fruits and veg placed inblender and made into smoothies.

Are there benefits?Fresh juice can provide a preservative free, no addedsugar beverage and can be greatas a treat or occasional in-between meal snack. Softdrinks and cordials are loadedwith refined sugars, adding no

nutritional value to our dietsand leading to an increased riskof obesity and diabetes, therefore opting for a fresh juiceon social occasions may helpkeep these out of our diets. There are a few considerationsthough you must keep in mindbefore you start to juice yourfruit and veg.

Whole fruit and vegetable consumption is associated withimproved health and well-beingbut there is little evidence tosupport the benefits of juice asa replacement. Whole fruit orveg consumption promotes gastrointestinal health by theincreased intake of both solubleand insoluble fibre. Solublefibre has been identified withboth lowering of cholesteroland maintaining blood glucoselevels as well as maintainingfullness, whilst insoluble fibrehelps reduce constipation and maintain positive bowelmovements.

It is therefore a great benefit toour bodies that fibre be preserved in our foods. Bymaintaining the skin of fruit orveg and keeping pulp can assistthis. Not peeling fruits or vegbefore blending can be a positive way to achieve this, andif you use a cold-pressed orcentrifuged juice, why not keepthe discarded skins and pulpand use them in other recipessuch as in fruit salads, Birchermuesli or in a vegetable ragout.

Does juice keep you full?Chewing is a contributing factorto appetite control. The reduction of fibre combinedwith not chewing may reducesatiety when consuming juices, leading to eating additionalfoods alongside a juice. Although fruits and veg are lowin kilojoules, it is tempting tojuice or blend more than whatyou would normally eat in asolid form. The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend

a serving size of no added sugarjuice be no more than ½ a cup, making it very easy to consume2 or even 3 serves in one drink ifyou are not mindful of yourserving size in a glass.

Remember, juicing your fruitsand vegetables should be an occasional rather than a replacement. It may be tempting to try and achieve ahigher nutritional intake by juicing, however fruit and vegetables in the form of wholefood are still preferential. Keepin mind, to maintaining nutrientquality when you blend or juice, make sure to drink it straightaway. The longer the juice orblend is left, the greater theamount of nutrient degradation. You can seal and store cold–pressed juices for a limitedtime but make sure you use asterilized container for safe foodstorage and the prevention ofbacterial growth.

TO JUICE OR EAT IT WHOLE?

HEALTHY LIVING REVIEW: YOUFOODZ

I’m a busy boy. Always on themove and juggling what feelslike a thousand things at once. Most of the time food is alwaysat the bottom of my to-do list until it’s too late and I’mstarving.

I know this sounds ridiculousbut I honestly don’t feel like Ihave enough time in the day tocook three meals a day plussnacks seven days a week. Justthinking about it makes me

exhausted. Is it time for a napyet?

Working in the health and fitness industry I always feelguilty not cooking fresh andhealthy meals. I’m so underprepared and lazy. I always just end up buyingtakeaway, most of the time it’snot the healthiest choice either. Now who’s to blame fornot having a six pack?

Occasionally I’ll get the “yes!I’m going to be so good thisweek, I’m going to eat healthyand meal prep for an entireweek! No excuses” thought. Two days later I’ve given up onthe chicken, broccoli, rice threetimes a day, gone to KFC, criedand spent all my money onhealthy food I didn’t eat.

That’s when Youfoodz comes tothe rescue. I go online, choosefrom an ever changing

selection of meals and snacksand it’s delivered fresh on mydoorstep. Easy as that!

When I order Youfoodz I don’thave to think. I don’t have toworry about shopping, cooking, cleaning or anything. Themeals are super simple to prepare which is what I wantwhen I’m on the go all the timewith my hectic life. I just heatand eat.

I used to go grocery shoppingand so much of it would go towaste and I’d be so annoyed at

myself for wasting good food. Now there is no waste.

The meals actually taste greatand there is such a big variety! It’s like having a restaurant inthe fridge. Meals are deliveredfresh, not frozen and I feelabout 90% guilt free. There is achocolate protein brownie thatmakes me feel 10% guilty, howcan such a delicious thing begood for me? Apparently it’snot that bad.

Coming in just under $10 ameal with free shipping on a

minimum spend makes it a nobrainer choice for me overtakeaway any day.

Every time I come home to thebox delivered on my doorstep Iget so excited. It’s like Christmas every single week.

If you’re time poor, want tostop buying unhealthy takeaway or just want to simplify your life, giveYoufoodz a try. Visitwww.youfoodz.com for furtherinformation.

Recently I’ve had a delightfulyoung family come to my clinicfor regular Bowen treatments. The parents have both hadgreat success with their achesand pains being relieved bytherapists at Bowen Therapy atKarana Downs.

When I pointed out a few signsof possible pain in the youngboy’s body from some visualimbalance, they were amazed. The son had experienced injuries and pain in exactly

those areas in his body fromsport and minor accidents andfalls when playing with hisfriends. When I asked if he hadever had Bowen they said “No,had never actually thought of it for him. We didn’t realisekids could have it too.” So, Iasked permission to do someBowen therapy on him, and uphe hopped onto the treatmenttable, very excited about thewhole idea!

Children LOVE Bowen therapy;their little bodies are so openand receptive to the techniquethat a session is very quick.Their body just accepts thenew information and goesabout making the adjustmentsand realigning without havingto wade through the toxins andtension that adults hold intheir bodies. He thoroughly enjoyed his experience, said he“felt like he was floating andwas sooooo relaxed!” He said it

was the best thing he had everfelt happen in his body. Oncehe was up and about he could feel his body was softer, moving easily and felt moreeven and balanced. I encouraged his parents to continue with another 2 sessions with us.

Children are very resilient, andoften after a fall or injury whenplaying, they just get up andkeep on playing, not wanting to

miss out on any fun. However, lots of these little (or big) incidents over time can buildup into areas of tightness andpain.

Bowen Therapy is great forwhenever they have a fall orhard contact when playingsport etc, just to release thememory of that injury fromtheir cells as quickly as possible. Some clients comment that they have

memories, sensations or flashbacks of when they hadthe original injury, as theirbody works its way backthrough the events and releases the trauma. Such aninteresting, fascinating technique!! And one that is stillrevealing its power through research and testimonials fromaround the world.

I have treated many childrenand they all respond quicklyand love the way it makesthem feel. Bowen can treat allsorts of sore spots in the body, shoulders, knees, back, headaches, asthma, digestiveissues, sinus. Now that youknow all this, remember youcan bring your children alongwith your big adult bodies forBowen to keep ‘every -body ‘happy, healthy and aligned too!
