LPD (W/sq.ft.) exempt when separately switched and independent from general illumination

Design Considerations Avoid excessive glare - whenever possible, avoid mounting harsh and bright

luminaires directly above patient beds, including typical 2x4 fixtures that may cause discomfort glare and create an intimidating space with an institutional feel

Consider using small aperture recessed fixtures, strategically located relative to the bed such that there is no direct view of the lamp, or use lensed fixtures to further mitigate glare

Reading is a common visual task for patients. Wall- or ceiling-mounted luminaires with minimum of 3-level switched control are recommended, dimmable preferred

Provide patient access to lighting controls, typically done through the patient bed adjustment and/or nurse calls, to improve patient comfort and satisfaction

Provide nightlights for patient and caregiver circulation that are connected to occupancy sensors on timers or photocells and emit long wavelength light between 600-620 nm, to limit circadian rhythm disruption during the sleep cycle

Design Considerations Task lighting- work surface lighting within nurses' stations must be kept

constant day and night to support 24/7 visual tasks Avoid extreme contrasts- careful planning is required to ensure that light levels

are coordinated between corridors and adjacent spaces Avoid excessive glare- proper placement and shielding of fixtures are required

for visual comfort Day/Night cycles- corridors adjacent to patient rooms must have high light

levels during the day and low light levels at night to support patient recovery
