The program offers physical activity, health education and social events for Medicare-eligible and Group Retiree members. Here at the Illinois Valley Y, if you are a member of a Medicare health plan or Medicare Supplement carrier that offers the SilverSneakers® Fitness Program, you can enroll at no additional cost! Please contact us at (815) 223-7904 to see if your health plan qualifies you for our SilverSneakers® and Prime memberships. You may also contact your insurance provider, or go to the SilverSneakers® website at silversneakers.com.

SilverSneakers® Classic Mon/Wed at 9:00a (Group Exercise South) Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a SilverSneakers ball are offered for resistance. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support.

SilverSneakers® Circuit Mon/Wed/Fri at 10:00a (Group Exercise South) Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers ball is alternated with low-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is used for standing support, stretching and relaxation exercises.

SilverSneakers® Splash Tue/Thur at 9:30a (Shallow End of Lap Pool) Activate your urge for variety! Splash offers fun, shallow-water movement to improve agility and flexibility while addressing cardiovascular, strength and endurance conditioning. No swimming ability is required, and a SilverSneakers kickboard or other aquatic equipment is used to improve strength, balance and coordination.

SilverSneakers CardioFit®

Get up and go in this cardio workout. The class focuses on low-impact movement, building upper-body strength, abdominal conditioning, stretching, and relaxation exercises designed to energize your active lifestyle.

Senior Group:Are you aged 62 or older? Come join our Senior Group! In addition to our Y’s exercise programs, special events, etc., the Y offers our senior members an opportunity for socializing and meeting new people by attending our Senior Group Events. What’s more is that Senior Group events are FREE for our YMCA SilverSneakers® Members. There is a fee for non-members to attend. Visit our Courtesy Counter for a calendar of Senior Group Events, which are available monthly.

Water Walking:Looking for a great, low-impact workout that won’t make you sweat? Hit the link Aquatic Lazy River for some Water Walking! Water buoyancy helps support your body’s weight, reducing stress on your joints. Furthermore, water offers 12 times the resistance that air does so you’re also strengthening and building muscles. Burn between 330-500 calories per hour by walking briskly. Doing so improves core muscle strength, balance and coordination. It is a tranquil, low-impact form of exercise that can even be fun! Water Walking is free for YMCA members. There is a daily fee for non-Y members. Water Walkers must be age 18 and older. Water Walking takes place Mon/Wed/Fri 9:30a to 11:00a and Tues/Thurs 5:30p to 7:30p.

WE ASKED SOME OF OUR MEMBERS QUESTIONS, HERE’S WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY!

“How long have you been a member of the IL Valley Y?”“Why did you become a member?”

“What is your favorite thing about the Y?”

EMMELYNE MARGOWSKI Member for 2.5 years• I started my fitness journey about 2 years ago. I was searching for

fitness centers I could truly commit to. All the equipment available & the positive environment that made me feel comfortable the moment I walked in, were reasons that I joined. I have lost 95lbs. & am proud to be a member.

• The equipment & amenities offered, comfortable/positive environment, & friendly faces are my favorite things about the Y. I’ve made some important & valuable relationships with people that are always there encouraging me & pushing me to me the best version of myself.

DAN BROOKS Member for 3 years• The Y has always been my “second home.” As kids, back in the 50’s,

we’d all hang out for athletic play, bean & hotdog lunches, & fun. The Silver Sneakers® Program is a terrific benefit, too!

• The friendliness of the staff is wonderful, & the facility is so special. I enjoy the variety of equipment, the extraordinary pool facilities & so many other things to help me improve my fitness.

JAMIE FUENTES Member for 25 years• I joined to be in better shape & good health.• I enjoy that there is plenty of space to work out & a swimming pool.

PATSY WILLIAMS Member for 3 years• My reasons for joining were the aerobics (group fitness classes),

corporate membership rate & monthly challenges.• My favorite things about the Y are Silver Sneakers® & Y30 Zone.

VALUE-BASED HEALTH CAREWhat to Know About

It’s a given that most of us would prefer to stay healthy. We’d like to prevent as many diseases as we can or nd them early, when they are often easier to treat. And if we’re diagnosed with a disease or chronic condition, like diabetes, we want our medical providers to help us manage our condition using the latest evidence-based guidelines.

This simple formula for good health and wellness is the basis for a new way of delivering care in this country called value-based health care.In value-based care, physicians and other health care providers are rewarded for helping patients improve their health, prevent disease and control chronic conditions.

Providers who offer value-based care rely on treatments backed by the best available science. The idea is that they explain the best options to you, and your own values and preferences help determine the right treatment plan.

Providers in a value-based care system also make it a point to coordinate care with your other

providers, so that everyone knows the results of your tests and procedures. This aims to cut down on repeat care that may not be needed and costs time and money.

The ultimate goal of value-based care is to help you recover from injuries and illnesses more quickly and to help you avoid a chronic disease, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. The potential results are, you’ll see your provider less often, and you’ll need fewer medical tests and procedures. And you’ll spend less money on prescription medications.

Good idea for everyoneValue-based care is meant to benet

everyone—from patient to provider to payer:• Patients spend less money to get healthier.• Providers become more efcient and enjoy

greater patient satisfaction.• Payers (insurance companies) eventually will

be insuring a healthier population and will face less of a nancial risk.

SWIM LESSONS: A Life-SkillThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website states, “every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger. Drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury in the United States.” These powerful statistics show us that drowning is still a major issue, despite being very preventable.

Outside of water safety, learning to swim also offers numerous other health benefits, such as low-impact cardio exercise and full-body workouts. Swimming is often the center of numerous recreational activities, especially during the summer months. Knowing how to swim can greatly reduce the drowning risks involved in many of our favorite pastimes, like: at home swimming, boating, water-skiing, jet-skiing, surfing, fishing and more!

The Illinois Valley YMCA offers a variety of swim lesson options for all ages and ability levels to keep our kids and adults safe in the water! Our exceptional staff and certified swimming instructors provide all our learners a safe and positive experience.

Water Acclimation: Beginning lessons without parents | Must be at least 3-yrs-old and wear a swim diaper if not yet toilet trained | Learning how to enter and exit the water safely, kick, blow bubbles, assisted front and back floats and other safety.

Water Movement: Must be at least 3-yrs-old and wear a swim diaper if not yet toilet trained | Learning how to enter and exit water safely, submerge under water, independent front and back floats and glides, and other safety.

Water Stamina: Must be at least 3-yrs-old and wear a swim diaper if not yet toilet trained | Learning how to enter and exit water safely, swim on their front and back, tread water, retrieve an item chest-deep off pool bottom, and other safety.

Stroke Introduction: First step in our Swim Strokes part of the lesson, for swimmers who have finished swimming basics | Must be at least 5-yrs-old | Learning front crawl, back crawl, dive, elementary back stroke, treading water, breast stroke and butterfly.

Stroke Development: 2nd Step of Swim Strokes | Must be at least 5-yrs-old | Working on endurance, front and back crawling for 25 yards, dives, sidestroke, treading water, and breast and butterfly strokes for 25 yards each.

Stroke Mechanics: Final step in our swim lessons | Must be at least 5-yrs-old and completed all prior steps of the program | Students asked to front and back crawl for 50 yards with a proper turn, perform dives, elementary back stroke for 50 yards, breast stroke for 50 yards with a proper turn, butterfly for 25 yards, tread water for 2 minutes and be able to retrieve an object in deep water.

Private Swim Lessons Also Offered: We also offer private swim lessons for persons aged 3 and up! These lessons provide one-on-one attention and learning of a variety of swimming techniques and skills from beginner to advanced levels. The sessions offer whatever instruction is needed and/or requested by the student. Additionally, lessons are scheduled according to the student’s availability. A request form can be picked up at the Courtesy Counter and you will be contacted when an instructor is available. *Please note: 12-hour cancellation notice is required or the lesson is counted as attended.
