This course introduces you to a variety of
Health and Social Care settings.
We encourage a work placement in Year 12 to
experience how different settings work and to
support the units we study.
We also make use of guest speakers and have
attended local health provider conferences.
This subject can take you onto university or
into further training for a range of careers in
the Health and Social Care setting.
Examples of careers our students have gone
on to include: primary school teacher,
midwife, paediatric nurse, physiotherapist,
early years carer, social worker, occupational
therapist.

Why study Health & Social Care?
Entry Requirements:
Five grade A* - C passes at GCSE.
KS4 experience in Health and Social Care is
desirable although not essential.

Unit 1: Promoting quality care
This unit looks at attitudes and prejudices within a
care setting; how users gain access to services and
how their rights and responsibilities are
respected. Values of care and safe working
practices are ongoing themes throughout the work.
Unit 2: Communication in care settings
All 4 types of communication are researched and the
factors that support and inhibit communication
addressed within a variety of settings.
Communication skills and theories relating to
communication form an independent research task
leading to the planning and execution of an
interaction with a users or practitioners.
Unit 3: Promoting good health
This unit looks at the principles of health, well being,
health promotion, preventative measures and job
roles. A health promotion campaign will be planned,
executed and evaluated within school.
Unit 4: Care practice and provision
This unit looks at the planning and provision of
services and how national policy and legislation
can affect care practice and provision locally.
Quality assurance is investigated and how it is
promoted by services. Assessment work involves
conducting a survey relating to quality assurance
and how services and practitioners meet individual
needs and work within partnerships.
Unit 5: Social Trends
This unit investigates the social trends and
patterns family life. It investigates the reasons for
any changes in the structure of and roles within
the family and uses data to explore and draw
conclusions about these trends.
Unit 6: Research methods in health and social
care
This unit will look and the purpose, methods of
research, ethical issues, sources of error and bias
in research. Research will be planned, executed,
results presented and analysed. An evaluation of
the findings will take place.
