StatementofPurpose

RocketshipEducation(RSED)iscommittedtothesafetyandsecurityofstudents,faculty,staff,andvisitorsonitscampus.Inordertosupportthatcommitment,wehaveledathoroughreviewandrevisionofRSEDemergencymitigation/prevention,health,preparedness,response,andrecoveryproceduresrelevanttonaturalandhuman-causeddisasters.

TheHealth/SafetyPlanhereinistheofficialpolicyofRocketshipEducation.Itisaresultofacomprehensivereviewandupdateofschoolpoliciesinthecontextofitslocations.Wesupportitsrecommendationsandcommittheschool'sresourcestoongoingtraining,exercises,andmaintenancerequiredtokeepitcurrentandtailorrecommendationstonewregionsasRocketshipexpands,especiallywherenoted.Thisplanisablueprintthatreliesonthecommitmentandexpertiseofindividualswithinandoutsideoftheschoolcommunityandclearcommunicationwithemergencymanagementofficials.

Thishandbookwaswrittenincompliancewiththisschool’scharteranddevelopedincooperationwithFederalandStateguidelines1.

Thisplanistobereviewedannually.

Thisplanincludesspecificcoursesofactiontobetakenincaseanemergencysituationdevelops.EveryemployeeofRocketshipEducationisexpectedtobefamiliarwiththisplaninordertocarryouthis/herresponsibilitiesinanemergency.

Mission

RocketshipEducationwillfocusontheeliminationofthedisadvantagesoftenassociatedwithpovertyandlanguagebarriersfromthestartofachild’seducationbyimmersingchildreninliteracyandmathematics.Wewillprepareourgraduatestoachieveabovegradelevelintheirsecondaryeducationandattendfour-yearcolleges.

SafeSchoolVision

1. Rocketshipwillprovideasafe,orderly,andsecureenvironmentconducivetolearning.

2. Rocketship will create a school in which will be safe from both physical and social-psychologicalharm.

3. Rocketshipwilldevelopaplan toworkcooperativelyandcollaborativelywith thenationaloffice and School Board to identify, establish and use strategies and programs to complywithlocalschoolsafetylaws.

4. Rocketship will develop a plan to work cooperatively and collaboratively with parents,pupils, teachers, administrators, counselors and community agencies, including lawenforcement,toprovidesafeandorderlyschoolsandneighborhoods.

5. Rocketshipwillcreatealearningandworkingenvironmentwhereparentscanbeconfidentthattheirstudentsaresafeandsecure.

6. Rocketshipwilldevelopanacademicprogramthatwill focusonhighexpectationsofpupilperformanceandbehaviorinvariousaspectsoftheschoolexperience.

7. Rocketshipwillidentifyclearproceduresforemergencies.

8. Rocketship is aware of very few conditions on campus that could potentially causeaccidental injury to students or staff and the school staff is working hard on preventingaccidentalinjurytothosepresentoncampus(students,staff,parents,etc.).

9. Rocketship will solicit the participation, views, and advice of teachers, parents, schooladministrators,andcommunitymembersandusethisinformationtopromotethesafetyofourpupils,staffandcommunity.

WhatdoesRSEDdotopromoteschoolsafety?

RocketshipSchoolsusethefollowingtraining,exercises,tools,andresourcestopromoteschoolsafety:

Health/SafetyPlan(thisdocument):EveryschoolisequippedwithacopyofthisHealth/SafetyPlan,whichshouldbekeptintheFrontOffice.Thisplanisalsoaccessibleonline.Thisplanisreviewed/updatedeveryyearbyRSEDnationalstaff.Schoolleaders,OfficeManagers,andBusinessOperationsManagersareexpectedtoreviewthismanualeverysummer.

Training:Schoolstaffreceivetrainingannuallyonavarietyoftopics,includingbasicfirstaid,CPR,andemergencyprocedures.

SafetyDrills:Schoolsrunregularsafetydrills(earthquake,tornado,fire,etc.)inaccordancewithlocalregulations.ProtocolsforrunningsafetydrillsareincludedinthisHealth/SafetyPlan.

SchoolSafetyTeams:Beforetheschoolyearstarts,eachschoolmakesassignmentstoaSchoolSafetyTeam.SchoolSafetyteamsmeetatleasttwiceayear.

SafetyChecklists:Schoolstaffconductregularwalkthroughstoidentifyhazardsandtoconfirmthattheschoolfacilitiesareingoodcondition.

SchoolEvacuationMap+AssemblySites:Eachschoolhasadesignatedon-andoff-siteassemblysiteincaseofanevacuation.

SafetyEquipment:InadditiontoFirstAidKitsandotheremergencytools(e.g.aworkingflashlight,survival/earthquakebuckets),schoolsareequippedwithfireextinguishersandalarms.TheRSEDFacilitiesteammaintainsextinguishersandalarms(andkeepsbuildinguptocode).T

EmergencyCards:EmergencycardsforstudentsarecollectedatthebeginningoftheschoolyearandkeptintheFrontOffice.TheOfficeManagerusesthesecardstocontactstudentparent/guardiansincaseofanemergencyattheschool

SafetyClipboards:EveryRSEDclassroomisequippedwithasafetyclipboardwithanevacuationmapandinformationtobeusedincaseofemergency.

SafetyBinder:TheschoolBusinessOperationsManagersisresponsibleformaintainanup-to-dateSafetyBinderthatcontainstheschool’sdrilllogsandotherdocumentationrelatedtoschoolsafety.

SafetyAudit:Schoolsareperiodicallyauditedbyregional/nationalstafftoensurecompliancewithinternalandexternalsafetyrulesandregulations.

CrisisResponsePlan:RocketshipalsohasanestablishedCrisisResponsePlanforschoolleaderstoaccesswithplanstostabilizeaschoolcommunityanddealwithpubliccommunications.ThisplaniskeptconfidentialtoRSEDschoolleaders.

Accident/IncidentBinder:Whenthereisamajoraccidentorbehavioralincidentoncampus,schoolemployeesfilloutanAccident/Incidentbindertokeeparecordofwhathappened.Thesearekeptinadistinct“Accident/IncidentReport”binder.

SafeFacilities

InaccordancewithBoardpolicyandregionalstatutes2,bothstudentsandstaffoftheschoolcampushavetherighttobesafeandsecureintheirschools.Thisincludeshavingasafephysicalenvironment.

SchoolLocationandNeighborhood

RocketshipEducation’selementaryschoolsarelocatedinareasthathaveahigherpovertylevelandcrimerate.TheimmediateareaaroundtheschoolscurrentlyruninSanJose,CAincludesinglefamilydwellingsandrentalhomes.Presentsafetyhazardsincludehighresidentturnover,underemployment,juvenilecrime,highpercentageofrenters,unsafepublicspacesandgangactivity.

SchoolBuildings

RocketshipwillbehousedinafacilitythatmeetsCaliforniaBuildingCoderequirements(Part2(commencingwithSection101)ofTitle24oftheCaliforniaCodeofRegulations),asadoptedandenforcedbythelocalbuildingenforcementagencywithjurisdictionovertheareainwhichthecharterschoolislocated.

HazardousMaterials:Surveysandmanagementplanswillbemaintainedandupdatedforhazardousbuildingmaterials(lead,asbestos,etc.)andhazardousmaterialsusedandstoredinandaroundtheSchoolwillbehandledanddispensedproperly.Additionally,appropriatetrainingforstaffworkingwithhazardousmaterials(i.e.,pesticides,cleaningchemicals,etc.)willbeprovided.

IndoorAirQuality:AcomprehensiveindoorairqualityprogrammodeledontheEPA’s“ToolsforSchools”programwillbeimplementedandmaintained.ThiswillincludeactivitiesdescribedintheSafetyChecklists.

Maintenance/InspectionofSchoolBuildings:Inspectionswillbeperformedtoensurethatdailyoperationsdonotcompromisefacilitysafetyandhealth.Thiswillincludemaintainingsafeaccess/egresspaths(bothroutineandemergency),accesstoemergencyequipment,eliminatingobstructionstoairflow,etc.

Visitors/CampusAccessPolicies:Rocketshipschoolsadheretoestablishedvisitorandvolunteerpolicies.Thesepoliciesshallbesharedwithschoolsonitsbox.netonlinefilestoragesite.

Arrival/Dismissal:Inaddition,RocketshipEducationmaintainsaschoolmapestablishedbyschoolstaffateachschoolindicatingsafeentranceandexitareasforpupils,parentsandschoolemployeesonitsbox.netonlinefilestoragesiteandinhardcopyateachschoolsite.

ExpectationsforCampusSafetyandAppearance

RSEDexpectsprincipalsandnational/regionalstafftoensurethatourschoolcampusesreflectthepridewetakeinourlearningenvironments.(Seealso:SafetyChecklists)

Thefollowingareexplicitexpectationsforcampusappearanceandupkeep:

- RSEDschoolbuildingsarewell-maintainedandappearneatandclean- Pupilstakeprideintheappearanceoftheirschoolandmaycontributetocampus

beautificationefforts(e.g.providingartworkforthewalls,plantingavegetablegardenoutside)

- Iftheschoolisenclosedbyafence,thegateshouldbekeptlockedand/ormonitoredduringschoolhours

- Duringtheschoolday,staffmembersshareresponsibilityforcampussupervisionanddonothesitatetoquestionvisitorsorcommunicatesafetyconcernstothePrincipal

- Whentheschoolstaffhasidentifiedlocationsonthecampusthatposeparticularsafetyconcerns,thoseareasreceiveincreasedsupervisionasdeterminedbythePrincipal

- GraffitiandotheractsofvandalismareremovedASAP.Itisthegoalofstafftomakesurethatschoolsarerestoredbeforepupilsarriveeachday,aspossible

- Schoolleadershaveanaccountabilityandmaintenancesysteminplaceformostequipment(e.g.,printers,copiers,laptops),whichshouldincludeinventoryingequipmentannually

- SchoolleaderswillinstituteandabidebyadditionalsecurityproceduresthatareestablishedregionallyorbythePrincipal,suchastheuseofsecuritysystems.

(3)Response

Rocketshipwillprepareschoolstafftorespondtoemergencysituationseffectivelyandefficiently.Thisdocumentcontainscarefully-devisedEmergencyResponsePlans(SeePart:2)forseveralcommonemergencies.Thegoaloftheseplansistoguidestafftoresolveanemergencysituationquickly,whileminimizingcasualtiesandpropertydamage.

(4)Recovery

Ifadisasteroccurs,Rocketshipwillcarryoutarecoveryprogramthatinvolvesbothshort-termandlong-termefforts.Short-termoperationsseektorestorevitalservicestotheschoolandprovideforthebasicneedsofthestaffandstudents.Long-termrecoveryfocusesonrestoringtheschooltoitsnormalstate.

Thefederalgovernment,pursuanttotheStaffordAct,providesthevastmajorityofdisasterrecoveryassistance.Therecoveryprocessmayincludeassistancetostudents,familiesandstaff.Examplesofrecoveryprogramsincludetemporaryrelocationofclasses,restorationofschoolservices,debrisremoval,restorationofutilities,disastermentalhealthservices,andreconstructionofdamagedstadiumsandathleticfacilities.

• NoteonEmergenciesOccurringDuringSummerorOtherSchoolBreaks

o Ifaschooladministratororotheremergencyresponseteammemberisnotifiedofanemergencyduringthesummer(orwhenstudentsarenotinattendanceforotherreasons,dependingontheschoolschedule),theresponseusuallywillbeoneoflimitedschoolinvolvement.Inthatcase,thefollowingstepsshouldbetaken:

a) DisseminateinformationtoEmergencyResponseTeammembersandrequestameetingofavailablemembers.

b) Identifyclosefriends/staffmostlikelytobeaffectedbytheemergency.Keepthelistandrecheckitwhenschoolreconvenes.

c) Notifystafforfamiliesofstudentsmostlikelytobeaffectedbytheemergencyandrecommendcommunityresourcesforsupport.

d) Notifygeneralfaculty/staffbyletterortelephonewithappropriateinformation.

e) Schedulefacultymeetingforanupdatetheweekbeforestudentsreturntoschool.

f) Bealertforrepercussionsamongstudentsandstaff.

Whenschoolreconvenes,checkcoregroupoffriendsandotherat-riskstudentsandstaff,andinstituteappropriatesupportmechanismsandreferralprocedures.

PrinciplesforEmergencyResponse

Theprevioussectiondiscussedthefourphasesofemergencymanagement(Mitigation/Prevention,Preparedness,Response,andRecovery).Thissectionfocusesonthesecondphase(Response)andprovidesaframeworkforrespondingtoaschoolemergency.

ImportantPrinciple#1:WhilethePrincipalisultimatelyresponsibleforleadingschool-wideemergencyresponses,all/anystaffmembersshouldfeelpreparedtotakechargeinanemergencyresponsesituation.

Schoolpersonnelareusuallyfirstonthesceneofanemergencysituationinorneartheschool.Schoolleadersmaynotbethefirstresponderinanemergencysituation–itcouldbeateacher,supportstaffmember,ortheschoolpsychologist.Staffmemberspresentduringanemergencysituationwillbeexpectedtotakechargeandremaininchargeofanemergencyresponsesituationuntilitisresolvedoruntilhe/shecantransfercommandtothePrincipalortoanemergencyresponderagencywithlegalauthoritytoassumeresponsibility.ItisimportantthatRSEDemployeesunderstandthisexpectationwhencommittingtoworkataRocketshipschool.

ImportantPrinciple#2:Staffmembersshouldseekhelpfromotheragencies,butmayNOTtransferresponsibilityforstudentcareoutsideRSED.

Whenrespondingtoanemergency,schoolstaffshouldseekandtakedirectionfromlocalofficialsandseektechnicalassistancefromstate,federal,andotheragencies(e.g.,industry)asappropriate.Atnotime,however,shouldschoolofficialstransferresponsibilityformanagingstudentstoanotheragency–accountingforstudentsistheresponsibilityoftheschool

Whenanemergencysituationoccurs,schoolpersonnelmustquicklydeterminewhichinitialresponseactionisappropriateforthesituation.Evacuateorduckandcover?Lockthedoorsorgotoasafespace?

Therearetwoquickstepstodeterminingwhattodowhenfacedwithanemergency:1)identifythetypeofemergency;and2)determineimmediateaction(s)thatarerequired.

Step#1:IdentifyTypeofEmergency

Thefirststepinrespondingtoanemergencyistodeterminethetypeofemergencyisoccurring.Isitafireoranearthquake?Isitafireintheneighborhoodoftheschoolorafireintheclassroom?Identifyingthetypeofemergencywillinformtheappropriateresponse.

Emergencyproceduresforarangeofman-madeandnaturalemergenciesareprovidedinthe“EmergencyResponsePlan”ofthisdocument.Asthislistcannotbeexhaustivetoallemergenciesandsituations,schoolstaffareexpectedtoexercisetheirjudgmentdeterminingwhichtypeofemergencymostappliestothecurrentsituation.

Alertingothersofanemergencysituationoncampuscansavelivesandminimizedamagetotheschoolsite.Schoolstaffshouldunderstandthefollowing:

ImportantPrinciple#4:Inalife-threateningemergency,followthe“WindowofLife”approachofProtectingYourself,thenProtectingOthers,thenProtectingthePlaceandthenNotifyingPublicSafety/911.

CommunicableandContagiousDisease/Illness

Schools,likeotherworkplaces,canspreadcommunicablediseases.Whenfacedwithanoutbreakofacommunicableorcontagiousdisease,thePrincipalofanRSEDschoolwillconsultcloselywiththeStateDepartmentofHealthforaccuratemedical/outbreakmanagementadvice.

Thefollowingareamongthemostcommoncommunicablediseasesinschool/childcaresettings:

Chickenpox:Chickenpoxisahighlycontagiousdiseasecausedbythevaricellavirus,amemberoftheherpesvirusfamily.Itisthemostcommonlyreportedchildhooddisease;about75%ofthepopulationhashadchickenpoxbyage15and90%byyoungadulthood.Chickenpoxismostcommonwinterandearlyspring.Symptomsofchickenpoxcommonlyappear13-17daysafterinfectionandincludethesuddenonsetofalowgradefeverandtiredness/weakness.Thisisfollowedbyanitchyblister-likerash.

CommonCold:Thecommoncold(alsocalledviralrhinitis)isaviralinfection,characterizedbynasalcongestion,aclear,runnynose,sneezing,scratchythroatandgeneralmalaise.

FifthDisease:Fifthdisease,amild,usuallynonfebrilerashillnessiscausedbyahumanparvovirus(B19).WhileconsideredamilddiseaseFifthdiseaseisofconcernforpersonswiththefollowingconditions:pregnant,immunocompromised,undergoingchemotherapytreatmentandsicklecell.StaffwiththeseconditionsshouldconsultwiththeirpersonalhealthcareprovidersandalertthePrincipalandregionalstaffimmediately.ThePrincipalandregionalstaffshouldcontacttheStateDepartmentofHealthifthereisacaseoroutbreakofFifthdisease.

HepatitisB:HepatitisB(formerlyknownasserumhepatitis)isaninfectionofthelivercausedbyabloodbornevirus.Thediseaseisfairlycommon.HepatitisBcausesfatigue,poorappetite,fever,nausea,vomiting,diarrhea,jointpain,hives,andrash.Urinemayappeardarkincolorandjaundice(yellowingoftheskin)mayresult.Symptomsappear3-6monthsafterexposure.

Influenza(Flu):Influenzaisaviralinfectionofthenose,throat,bronchialtubesandlungs.Therearetwomaintypesofvirus:influenzaAandinfluenzaB.Eachtypeincludesmanydifferentstrains,whichtendtochangeeachyear.

Measles:Measlesisahighlycontagiousviraldiseasethatcausesfeverandarash.Measlesismorecommoninwinterandspring.Epidemicsofmeaslescanoccur.Measlescancauseaveryhighfever,cough,runnynose,andredwateryeyes.Roughly2-4daysafterinitialsymptoms,arashofredspotsdevelopsonthefaceandspreadsoverthebody.Littlewhitespots(Koplikspots)mayappearonthegumsandinsidethecheeks.Apersoniscontagious4daysbeforeto4daysaftertheappearanceofthemeaslesrash.Infectionwithmeaslesprovideslifelongimmunity.

Meningitis(Bacterial):Meningitis(bacterial)isaseverebacterialinfectionofthemeninges(athinliningcoveringthebrainandspinalcord)causedbythebacteriacalledNeisseriameningitidis.Meningococcemiaisthetermforinfectionsinvolvingthebloodstream.Mostpeopleexposedtomeningococcusbacteriadonotbecomeseriouslyill,butsomedevelopfever,headache,vomiting,stiffneck,andrash.Thisdiseasecanbefatal.Symptomsmayoccur2-10daysafterexposure.StaffwiththeseconditionsshouldconsultwiththeirpersonalhealthcareprovidersandalertthePrincipalandregionalstaffimmediately.ThePrincipalandregionalstaffshouldcontacttheStateDepartmentofHealthifthereisacaseoroutbreak.

Meningitis(Viral):Viralmeningitisisaviralinfectionofthelining(meninges)coveringthebrainandspinalcorde.Therearemanytypesofvirusesthatcancausethisdisease.Somekindsofviralmeningitisandothersarenot.Symptomsincludefever,headache,stiffneck,andfatigue.Rash,sorethroat,andintestinalsymptomsmayalsooccur.StaffwiththeseconditionsshouldconsultwiththeirpersonalhealthcareprovidersandalertthePrincipalandregionalstaffimmediately.ThePrincipalandregionalstaffshouldcontacttheStateDepartmentofHealthifthereisacaseoroutbreak.

(MRSA)Methicillin-ResistantStaphylococcusAureus:MRSAstandsformethicillin-resistantStaphylococcusaureus,butisshorthandforanystrainofStaphylococcusbacteriawhichisresistanttooneormoreconventionalantibiotics.Symptomsdependonthepartofthebodyaffectedbutoftenincluderedness,swelling,andtendernessatthesiteoftheinfection.

Mumps:Mumpsisaviralillnessthatcausesfeverandswellingofoneormoreglandsnearthejaw.Mumpsismorecommonduringwinterandspring.Symptomsofmumpsincludefever,bodyaches,headaches,andtheswellingofoneormoreofthesalivaryglands.Theparotidgland(justbelowtheear)isoftenmostaffected.Complicationscanincludepain/swellingofthetesticles,deafness,arthritis,andproblemsofthebrainandnervoussystem.Peoplewithmumpsarecontagiousform3daysbeforeto4daysaftersymptomsappear.Symptomsusuallyoccur16-18daysafterinfection.

Tuberculosis:TBisspreadwhenapersonwhohasactive,untreatedTBgermsintheirlungsorthroatcoughs,sneezes,laughs,orspeaks,spreadingtheirgermsintotheair.ApersonwhobreathesinTBgermsusuallyhashadveryclose,day-to-daycontactwithsomeonewhohasactiveTBdisease.

WhoopingCough(Pertussis):Pertussis,alsoknownaswhoopingcough,isahighlycontagiousbacterialillnessthatcausesacoughlastingseveralweeks.Earlysymtpomsofpertussisincludearunnynose,sneezing,fever,andcough.About1-2weekslater,thecoughworsensandpatientsdevelopburstsorrapidcoughingfollowingbya“whoop.”Apersoniscontagiousfrom7daysafterexposureto3weeksaftertheappearanceofthecoughingfits.

VaccinationProgram§ Thevaccinationprogramhasbeenimplementedforthoseemployeeswhomaybeexposedtoblood

bornepathogensduringtheirroutineworktasks.Thereisnocosttoemployeesforthevaccinations.Thevaccinationprogramconsistsofaseriesofthreeinoculationsoverasixmonthperiod.

§ Vaccinationsshallbeperformedunderthesupervisionofalicensedphysicianorotherhealthcare

professional.AlistofEmployeesinterestedintakingpartinthevaccinationprogramshallbecreatedandkept.Alistofemployeeswhodeclinetotakepartinthevaccinationprogramshallbecreatedandkeptaswellandwillhavesigneda“vaccinationdeclinationform”.ThePrincipaloradesignatedemployeeshallnotifyinterestedemployeesofthetimeanddateofthevaccination,atleast2weekspriortothevaccinationdate.

PostExposureandFollow-Up§ Ifanemployeeisaccidentallyexposedtobloodbornepathogensduringtheperformanceoftheir

work,thefollowingshallbeimmediatelyconducted:o Employeesshallreceivemedicalconsultationandifnecessary,treatmento Aninvestigationofthecircumstancesurroundingtheexposureincidentshallbeconducted

1.Astaffmemberwhoisoriginallymadeawareofathreatorwitnessesanyattempttowardsself-harm,thatiswritten,drawn,spokenorthreatened,willimmediatelynotifythePrincipal.

2.Athreatinanyformmustbetreatedasrealanddealtwithimmediately.

3.Nostudentshouldbeleftalone,norconfidencespromisedtothestudentincaseofasuicidethreat.Incasesoflifethreateningsituations,astudent’sconfidentialitywillbewaived.

4.Alongwithschoolleaders,schoolpsychologistsareallthoroughlytrainedincrisisresponse.Principalsshoulduseschoolpsychologistsasaresourceincaseofapossiblethreatofself-harm.

5.Thelawrequiresthatyoudoonlywhatisreasonableunderthecircumstances;forexample,youdonotneedtotrytoremoveagunorotherweaponfromtheperson.

6.PrincipalsshouldrefertotheRSEDCrisisResponsePlan–SeriousInjuryorDeath(Grief)protocolforactionstotaketostabilizetheschoolcommunityafteratraumaticincident(e.g.asuicidethreatthatispublicoranactthatiswitnessedbyotherstudents).TheCrisisResponsePlanappendixalsocontainsresourcesaroundsuicide/self-harmthatcanbesharedwithparents/guardians.

EmergencyResponsetoaSelf-Harm/SuicideThreat

1) Takeallthreatsseriously.2) Ifthesituationisvolatile(i.e.thepersonhasattemptedorcouldattemptself-harmatanymoment),

call911.3) Donotleaveapotentiallysuicidalpersonunattended–sendarunnertonotifythePrincipalASAP.4) Ifotherstudentsareintheroomwithastudentwhohasattemptedoristhreateningtoattempt

suicide,theyshouldbeescortedtoanotherspace.

Important!Ifasuicidethreatispublicortraumatictootherstudents,thePrincipalshouldrefertotheRocketshipCrisisResponsePlanforstepstostabilizethegreaterschoolenvironment.

5) ThePrincipalwillthencontactthechild’sparent/guardianandtellthemofthesituationbyphone.

6) ThePrincipalwillthencontacttheSchoolPsychologisttoinformthemofthesituationandarrangeforariskassessmenttobeperformedwiththechildASAP.

7) Within24hrs,thePrincipalwillprovidethechild’sparents/guardianswithwritten

recommendationsfortreatmentandfollow-up.Theserecommendationsshouldincludethefollowing:

o Contactinformationforthenationalsuicidelifeline:1-800-SUICIDEor1-800-273-TALKo Findingsfromtheschoolpsychologist’sriskassessment

10) Undernocircumstancesshouldschoolstaffdrivethesuicidalstudentininpersonalvehicles.Do

PrincipalsshouldrefertotheRSEDCrisisResponsePlan–SeriousInjuryorDeath(Grief)protocolforactionstotakefollowingaseriousinjuryordeathattheschool.TheCrisisResponsePlanappendixcontainsresourcesaroundsuicide/self-harm.

Staffmembers,however,shouldknowthefollowing:

1. Incaseofseriousinjuryordeath,donotmovethevictimunlessabsolutelynecessary.Donotleaveaninjuredstudentalone.SendarunnertonotifythePrincipalandOfficeManagerASAP.

2. ThePrincipalwillcall911.3. TheOfficeManagershouldadministerFirstAid(SeePartFour:FirstAidandMedicalConditionsin

thisHealth/SafetyPlan).

4. Ifstudentsareinthesamespaceasastudentwhoisseriouslyinjured,theyshouldbeescortedelsewhere.

5. Donotmakeannouncementsaboutanaccidentorincidentovertheintercom.

6. ThePrincipalshouldrefertotheRSEDCrisisResponsePlanfornextstepstostabilizethesituationandsupporttheschoolcommunity.
