HEAL THE EARTH

Dear Parents

We all live on planet earth, which is the only planet known to have life……..Mother Earth is the womb of the

sustaining power of humanity. We are nurtured by the healthy condition of Mother Earth. In humans, if the

mother is ailing, the child suffers. In the womb, the child is helpless. But in our case, it is the mother who is

helpless. We, humans are the cause of the ailing planet. We are deteriorating natural resources, diminishing

forests and wetlands, depleting underground water for our own selfish requirements. The consequences

are loss of biodiversity, erosion of soil, rapid extinction of some important animal species, collapse of

fisheries, rising air and water pollution, rise in atmospheric temperature, thinning of ozone layer, regular

shortage of fresh drinking water, vanishing plants etc. The Earth is in trouble because of the way the

modern man has treated Her and for some reason it seems that much of it has to do with human arrogance

rather than ignorance. Even though science and technology have radically altered the terms of adaptations

to the nature, we still need to adapt to the environment and our MOTHER EARTH. We cannot and must not

ignore the cries of our planet to restore a more harmonious relationship with nature, nor must we lose the

opportunity to work harmoniously with each other for common good.

Keeping all these problems and issues in mind, we have taken “HEAL THE EARTH” as the theme for our

Summer Holiday Homework. It will help our children to use their optimum energy, support sustainability,

develop sensitivity, inspire and aware the community towards the need to protect and preserve the natural

assets of our Mother Earth.

On behalf of LAKMS, it is my humble and sincere appeal to all to take positive actions and move from dawn

to dusk towards a greener earth and be green crusaders to spread awareness around us. Let’s all pledge to

Organize an energy audit to assess how resources are being wasted at your neighbourhood. Students can

research how much energy is needed to heat or cool the cubic space in a home or the gymnasium and

how they might conserve energy by turning off the lights when the room isn't in use. They have to

research the benefits of turning off all computers and electronic gadgets and lowering the room

temperature at night. Students can brainstorm ways to prevent drafts around windows and reduce paper

waste.

Given below is a skeleton of a story. Use the information given in it to develop a story in about 150-200

words with Manik and Hariyali as central characters. Make your story interesting by adding a setting,

What happened? Manik and Haariyali, a brother-sister duo, honoured as ‘Green

Warriors’ by the Municipal Council.

Why? They revolutionized the way their neighbourhood managed their

trash.

How? They started a vermicomposting farm on their roof top; turned

plastic bottles into pots and grew plants and vegetables in them;

taught their neighbours how to make a personal herb and

vegetable garden in their terraces.

Result? More greenery, more cleanliness, less trash, fresh fruits and

1) POLLUTION: We know that the Earth is a unique planet in solar system yet we often carelessly harm

air, water and soil that help us to live. We use many resources from the environment to support our he

increasing population and it’s need. As a result we release waste into the environment. The contamination of

environment land water and air by waste smoke chemical and other harmful substances is called pollution.

The four main pollutions are air water noise and soil.

Type of activity: Individual work.

Reference: Newspaper

Every child is supposed to read newspaper during the summer break and find articles/clippings suggesting

the cause and effect of pollution. Each child will collect 10 such newspaper clippings on pollution and paste

them in the scrap book. Then the child will write a paragraph on his or her understanding.

Note: This is an activity to educate children on environment and develop habit of reading newspaper.

2) Make a report to explain the effect of various factors like Topography, Climate, Soil, Minerals etc on

population of any country. Give suitable examples from three different countries on the Earth.

3) The United Nations Organization: The world witnessed two World Wars in the 20th

century. World

War I was fought from 1914-1918. To ensure that no more such wars would occur, The League of Nations

was formed in 1920 but it was unable to prevent World War II which was fought from 1939-1945. After WW

2, the Allied Powers again put forward the idea of a world organization to prevent future wars and thus UNO

was formed. It does the work of healing the earth.
