“It is important to have a headspace centre in Mount
Gambier because young people should not have to suffer in
silence. headspace really makes a difference in young
people’s lives, like mine. It’s a safe and friendly place to
come.
I am passionate about reducing stigma around young
people reaching out for help. I want to let others know about
the support that’s available, and help give a youth
perspective to mental health support” Zari, headspace Youth
Reference Group volunteer

SCREENAGERS
Have you wondered about the impact of how much time you spend in front of screens? Young people
spend on average 6.5 hours a day on screens and that does not include classroom or homework
screen time. Research shows that baby mice exposed to screen time develop fewer cells responsible
for memory and learning than non-exposed mice.
On Wednesday night, Rubys Mount Gambier hosted a free screening of ‘Screenagers – Growing up in
the Digital Age.’ The film explored the impact of screen time on teenagers.
An important take away from the film is the importance of having honest conversations about screen
time, especially in families. At the back of the newsletter you can find some helpful conversation
starters.
MOBILE PHONE RECYCLING
Have you got an old phone(s) sitting at
home and don’t know what to do with
it? Drop it off at headspace to ensure it
doesn’t end up in landfill! We have
signed up to be part of MobileMuster, a
mobile phone recycling program that
accepts all brands and types of mobile
phones, plus their batteries, chargers
and accessories. Phones are recycled
in a safe, secure and ethical way.
BAN THE CUP
Will you join us in our challenge to ban the takeaway
coffee cup? Our favourite baristas at Slice of Metro
have been patient with us in our quest for 100%
reduction of takeaway cups in the office by the end
of September this year! If you do grab a takeaway
coffee cup, make sure you check to see if it’s
recyclable or not, they’re not all made the same! In
Mount Gambier City Council, you can recycle
disposable cardboard coffee cups in the recycling
bin. They need to be rinsed and the plastic lids need
to be placed in the rubbish (landfill bin).

DR LEOPOLD’S LIFE LESSONS
You may have seen a new clinician creeping
around the headspace building lately.
Introducing our rag doll mascot and friend, Dr
Leopold! Keep an eye out for his helpful
suggestions on keeping yourself healthy.
If I stretch out
like this long
enough,
someone
might scratch
me!
Dr Leopold*, can you tell us why stretching is good for us?
Stretching has many health benefits, but today I want to talk about how it can help reduce stress. A
buildup of stress can cause your muscles to contract, making you feel tense and uneasy. Tension in
your body can contribute to negative impacts on both your body and your mind.
Stretching exercises have powerful stress-busting abilities. Stretching soon after waking up can help
jump-start the mind and body. Stretching loosens tight muscles which helps your muscles both relax
and increase blood flow. It also encourages the release of endorphins, providing a sense of calm.
I encourage you to give some gentle stretching a go and see how it makes you feel!
