CHRISTMAS CONCERTS 2021

IMPORTANT NOTICE

After careful consideration and taking into account updated advice from Public Health Southwark, we have taken the decision to defer the Music Scholar Concerts this week until after the Christmas holiday. We are aware of how hard the students have been working to prepare, but with a rise in cases of COVID, revised government guidelines regarding face coverings and social distancing in communal areas we feel we cannot run the concerts as we would like to at this moment in time. We want all students to have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience if possible and in deferring these concerts until the start of next term we will have the time to make alternative arrangements if there is no change in the guidelines. We hope the students are not too disappointed - we look forward to hearing their progress in January 2022.

COP 26: Everything You Need to Know

What is COP 26? COP 26 stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’, and was attended by countries that signed the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This was a legally binding agreement made in 1992 when countries committed to avoiding any behaviours that could lead to ‘dangerous climate change’.

Why is COP 26 important? The past decade was the warmest on record, and most governments agree collective action is needed urgently.

GEOGRAPHY NEWS

What were the big talking points at COP26?

The talks could lead to some massive changes including: • Making a faster switch to electric cars • Speeding up the process of stopping coal

power • Cutting down fewer trees • Protecting more people from the impacts of

climate change, such as funding coastal-defence systems

Year 8 students at Kingsdale created their own sustainable development goals to combat climate change amongst other global issues.

Building Confidence in Problem Solving Online Each year AMSP run popular problem-solving classes for year 12 students and this year the courses are being run online. There are two different types of course for year 12 students being offered; one

pitched for students likely to study STEM courses at university and another for students aspiring to B/C grades who wish to improve their confidence with

problem-solving.

Both courses are designed for Year 12 students studying AS/A Level Mathematics. While students do

not need to be studying Further Maths, these courses would not be appropriate for Core Maths students (who will not be familiar with the subject

content).

Higher Level Problem Solving (HLPS) These regular classes offer students the opportunity

to develop mathematical problem-solving skills through discussion and collaboration. They are

designed to help students to develop strategies and confidence when tackling unfamiliar problems in Maths and will help with preparations for taking

advanced papers such as the MAT, TMUA and STEP examinations.

There will be 4 courses taking place, one each

evening of the week (Monday – Thursday). These will take place most weeks throughout the Spring term (starting the week beginning 10th January 2022).

Building Confidence in Problem Solving (BCPS)

These regular classes offer students the opportunity to develop mathematical problem-solving skills through discussion and collaboration. They are

designed to help students to develop strategies and confidence when tackling unfamiliar problems in Maths. This course is specifically targeted at

students aspiring to B or C grades so that they can interact with students working at similar levels.

This course will take place across 10 Wednesdays

evenings (beginning 12th January and finishing 30th March 2022).

To support students on this course to build their confidence, we request you do not request places for students aspiring to grades A or A* who would

be better placed on the HLPS course.

Please see the flyer for more details and the application form.

Top Tips On Motivation and Goal Setting

with your Child 15th December 2021 at 7:30pm Sign up link

With the New Year approaching, setting goals is important as it helps to give students motivation and vision. It focuses their mind and helps them to organise their time and resources so that they

can achieve great things. In the session, Rachel will discuss hot topics

such as intrinsic motivation, whether we should use rewards and sanctions, habit stacking and

the dreaded question “When will I ever need this in real life…”

The session will be jam-packed with useful

takeaways for students to try out at home and hopefully start the new year with a bang!

Teacher Recommendation This week, Drama & English teacher Ms Dunbar recommends Anxious People by Fredick Backman, a heist novel turned on its head with a bungled robbery and a hapless, hopeless perpetrator.

It is New Year’s Eve and ‘House Tricks’ estate agents are hosting an open viewing in an up-market apartment when an incompetent bank robber rushes in and politely takes everyone hostage. The anxious strangers caught up in the robbery all react in different ways. For Ana-Lena and Roger, busy buying-up apartments to fill the hole in their marriage, it's something else to talk about. For Julia and Ro, panicky parents-to-be, it's yet another worry. Lonely bank manager Zara only came here for the view. While 87-year-old grandmother Estelle seems rather pleased by the company. Ms Dunbar enjoyed the book because it was funny and warm. It’s a very empathetic look at different individuals lives, and how everyone deep down is actually pretty similar.

Student Recommendation

Daniel Strutton in Year 7 recommends a fun adventure book Fighting Fantasy: The Gates of Death by Charlie Higson The multi-million copy globally bestselling choose-your-own-adventure series has

been repacked and reignited for a brand new generation of children. All you need is dice, and you can choose which way the story goes. Caution is advised: the main character can die at any point. In this edition, YOU - the hero - must respond to a call for help from the people of Allansia. Your quest to the Temple of Miracles in the Invisible City will be challenging and dangerous, and your simple mission will soon take a darker turn as you face the legendary ‘Gates Of Death’. On the other side waits the Queen Of Darkness, Ulrakhaar. To stop her, and save Titan from destruction, you will have to venture further than ever before... to the Kingdom Of The Dead. Daniel recommends the book because it’s so fun to be in control of your own story, and he finds the book really amusing – although the setting is pretty grim! (Corpses everywhere, people going mad). Recommended for students at all Key Stages.
