Setting the Standard We celebrated fantastic success in the Department for Education’s ‘School and College Performance Tables’ this week, securing our position with 76% of students attaining 5 good GCSEs (A* - C) including English and maths, over 20% higher than the national average. On this key headline GCSE measure, Ilkley Grammar School is the joint best performing school in Bradford, and ranks top amongst neighbouring Leeds schools in the locality. We are naturally delighted with the headline result, but also thrilled by some of the detail behind the measure. What is particularly pleasing is the amount of progress which students make from their Key Stage 2 results during their first five years at IGS. Our high position in the Performance Tables recognises the value which is added to students’ achievement in English, mathematics and a wide range of subjects across the curriculum. It is testimony to the commitment and hard work of both staff and students, and reflects the importance the school places on all students achieving their personal best regardless of their ability. In terms of the percentage of students making expected progress in English, Ilkley Grammar School was the top performing school in Bradford with 86% achieving this standard; we placed joint second across Leeds and Bradford combined. Indeed, what the published Performance Tables don’t show is that almost half of all students actually made four or more levels of progress in English, significantly exceeding national expectations. This was similar in maths with 51% achieving four or more levels of progress; 80% made expected progress, the second highest in the Bradford district. Click here to view the results.

Our GCSE success bucked the national trend of top GCSE grades dropping for the fourth year in a row, and we increased the percentage of A/A* grades achieved by our students. This included outstanding attainment in English and maths, with over a third of students achieving A/A* grades in these subjects. In addition, in excess of 67% achieved the highest grades in the separate sciences of biology, chemistry and physics, alongside over 50% in geography and electronics and over 40% in philosophy and ethics, history, English Literature, art/photography and drama.

We enjoyed record breaking A-Level results with our highest ever points scores per student (962.3) and points per exam entry (231.6). On total points score per student, as well as the progress score for the amount of value added from GCSE to A-level, Ilkley Grammar School is ranked in first place across Bradford, even when the results of independent schools in the district are taken into account. With a 99% pass rate, and 40% of all A-level grades at A*/A, we continue to provide high quality education at the heart of our community. Of course, behind all the statistics are individual students and there were some phenomenal successes. The GCSE results top performer was Catherine Boyle with 10A*s and 1 A grade, followed by Rebecca Hall with 10A*s and Ella Glover, Millie Horn and Skye Lury with 9A*s and 1 A grade.

At A Level there were outstanding performances from a range of students, including Calum Carslaw and Rhiannon Savage, each with 4 A*s, Tom Bennett and Samuel Hill with 3A*s and Alex Burnett, Matthew Leedham and Jess Parker each with 2A*s and an A. Four students secured their places at Cambridge University, with over 83% of students moving on to university for the next stage of their education. We are strongly committed to continuous improvement. Our overriding aim at IGS is to ensure that our students achieve everything that they are capable of – their ‘Personal Best’ - from Year 7 through to Sixth Form and beyond. Hard work is an expectation of all and we strive for continual improvements year on year by challenging our staff and students to excel. Ilkley Grammar School has high aspirations for every child and we endeavour to inspire ambition for all. We work hard to develop and innovate our learning and teaching experiences, for example through our ‘iPads for learning’ initiative, and put inspirational and inclusive learning at the heart of all we do. We continually advance our curriculum to be responsive to student need and skills for life and work in a global twenty first century, and invest in the professional development of our staff to keep ourselves at the cutting edge of educational development. In short, we want everyone at IGS to be ambitious and to always aim high and last year’s results are testament to this.

Breakfast Week

24 - 30 January Breakfast Week is a campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and demonstrate the wealth of wonderful breakfast options available… breakfast should never be boring!

Did you know? The average person sits down to breakfast at 7.31am

during the week and 8.28 am at the weekend The nation’s favourite breakfast is a cooked breakfast,

followed by porridge, breakfast cereal and then toast The breakfast foods we are most likely to eat during the

week are wholegrain cereal (37%) followed by toast with spread (32%) and then porridge (27%)

Taste, speed, filling, quick to prepare and health, are the most important factors when it comes to breakfast and there is a growing trend for eating breakfast out of the home.

A worrying 45%* of people are skipping breakfast once or more during the week, with more than one in ten (13%) never eating it.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, giving you energy for the day ahead. Skipping breakfast can result in low energy, feeling grumpy and struggling to concentrate.

From Monday we are challenging our students to take up the challenge of Mission Breakfast? Eat Smart will be offering healthy breakfasts at their new Breakfast Club. The Courtyard Café will open daily at 7.30am (starting on Monday 25th January). Students can choose from a huge selection of breakfast, pay £2.50 and fuel up for the day!

Well done to Rebekah Gray (11AHF) who recently had a haircut and donated her lovely locks to the Princess Trust (a charity who make wigs for children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment). Rebekah has been putting up with the hassle of very long hair so that she could have a 10 inch haircut! It costs £350 to convert this real hair into a child's wig and Rebekah is now asking for donations to help make this happen.

There was outstanding batting from Lily Gazeley, Kirsty McMillan, Sophie Armitage and Rachel Scott. Becky Hadfield demonstrated amazing wicket keeping and made the most of a great opportunity to stump an opposition player out. Caitlan Rhodes showed some excellent bowling and got plenty of wickets for the team. Imogen Parton, Kara Milligan and Sophie Mason were very valuable to Ilkley in fielding, stopping boundary shots.. Ellie Cooper showed a great all round display with the bat and bowling. Overall, Ilkley came a commendable 3rd place with Holmfirth placed 1st..The team look forward to a possible outdoor tournament in the coming summer.

Protect Your Password Do you recognize these passwords? If so you might be in trouble! They are the 25 most popular and therefore easily guessed passwords that people use. Simply Splendid! On Thursday 14th January the Year 12 an 13 Theatre Studies students of IGS and Horsforth School were treated to a magical performance of ‘The Odyssey’ by Splendid Theatre Company.

The students were taken on this wild and often hilarious journey by three extremely talented actresses, managing to play all of the characters, except for Odysseus who was, of course, played by a wooden spoon. The actors brought the audience into the action and provided an enjoyable performance for all. This was followed by an intensive workshop on Greek Chorus and the importance of body language, as it is 55% of your communication!

The sixth form students will now use their experience to inform their devising, acting and written concept work. It was an absolutely fantastic theatrical morning!
