Wednesday, February 26
Start the Lenten season off right. Come back for our traditional Ash Wednes-day Service, beginning at 7:00 p.m., with the imposition of ashes and Holy Eu-charist Rite II. What or where is your wilderness? What causes you angst? What stresses you out? Journey with us through the 40 days of Lent as we follow Christ’s foot-steps in the wilderness. Christ will guide you in the right path, remove your angst and relieve your stress.

Wardens’ Corner Greetings from the Junior Warden Hi Everyone, If you are anything like me, 2020 almost came as a surprise! What happened to 2019? It seems like just yesterday that we began our journey without Fr. Barry and here we are in the midst of our journey with Fr. Chris. We are lucky to have him….he “fits” right in with us and has made our transition so much easier. “Thank you, Fr. Chris, we love you (and you too, Kathy)! 2019 also saw some liturgical changes…we started having one service on the fourth Sunday of each month alter-nating between Rite I and Rite II, followed by pot luck breakfast. This has worked remarkably well and has been well attended. Kudos to those of you who considered yourselves died in the wool “Rite One-ers” or “Rite Two-ers” who have gone with the flow and supported this change! As we await what God has in store for us this year, we continue to pray for our Church during our search process. With the assistance of the Diocese, we will begin actively looking for our new priest. Whether he or she will be part time, interim or supply remains to be seen, but we trust the process and we trust you. We have our budget in place and we have submitted it to the Diocese which is now ready to officially begin our search. We’ll keep you posted. So, happy, healthy and holy 2020 to all. Phil and I and your Vestry ask for your prayers and support as we enter this new year. There’s lots to be done, so we need to feel your energy. Also, please keep thinking of how you may lend your talents to St. Augustine. Everyone….EVERYONE…..has something worthwhile to contribute. Think about making that leap of faith and come talk with us! God is in our midst! In faith, JoAnn P.S. Keep watch for our new RED door coming soon!!!!

Just for Laughs Church Bulletin Bloopers Due to the Rector’s illness, Wednes-day’s healing services will be discon-tinued until further notice. Bertha Belch, a missionary from Af-rica, will be speaking tonight at Cal-vary Methodist. Come hear Bertha Belch all the way from Africa. The Rev. Merriwether spoke briefly, much to the delight of the audience. On a church bulletin during the min-ister’s illness: GOD IS GOOD; Dr. Hargreaves is better. Applications are now being accepted for 2 year-old nursery workers. The pastor will preach his farewell message, after which the choir will sing, “Break Forth Into Joy.” If you would like to make a dona-tion, fill out a form, enclose a check, and drip in the collection basket. Next Sunday Mrs. Vinson will be soloist for the morning service. The pastor will then speak on “It’s a Ter-
rible Experience. Source: https://pastors.com/44-funny-

From the National Church
[Diocese of Los Angeles] Sarah Chester,
45, a trustee of St. Margaret’s Episcopal
School in San Juan Capistrano, Califor-
nia, and her daughter Payton, 13, an
eighth-grade student there, were among
the nine people who died in a helicopter
accident on Jan. 26 in Calabasas.
Retired Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gian-na also died in the crash.
The other five crash victims were Or-
ange Coast College basketball coach
John Altobelli, his wife Keri and daughter
Alyssa; Christina Mauser, an assistant
basketball coach; and the helicopter pilot, Ara Zobayan, a respected flight instructor.
Gianna, Payton and Alyssa were members of an AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) basket-
ball team based at Kobe Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy. The group was headed for
a basketball tournament at the academy’s Thousand Oaks location when the crash oc-
curred. According to news reports, Bryant and his family often traveled by helicopter to
avoid traffic.
Survivors in the Chester family include Sarah’s husband and Payton’s father Chris; Sa-
rah and Chris’s twin sons Hayden and Riley, who are 10th graders at St. Margaret’s
School; Sarah’s mother, Catherine George, a member of St. Matthias Episcopal
Church, Whittier; and Sarah’s brothers Andy and Chris George.
“This is an unimaginable loss for the Chester family and the entire St. Margaret’s com-
munity,” wrote William N. Moseley, head of St. Margaret’s School, in a letter informing

faculty, students and parents of the tragedy. “We are a community in mourning. Our
greatest strength is when our St. Margaret’s community pulls together with arms around
one another, and this is one of those times.”
“The deaths of Sarah and Payton, beloved members of our diocesan family, in a tragic
accident receiving global attention serve as heartbreaking reminders of the connected-
ness and unity of all creation – of the indissoluble bonds among all who walk in faith,”
said Bishop John Harvey Taylor of the Diocese of Los Angeles. “Each of us in the Dio-
cese of Los Angeles is praying for Chris, Sarah’s husband; for Hayden and Riley, Pay-
ton’s brothers; for Catherine George of St. Matthias in Whittier, Sarah’s mother; for the
whole St. Margaret’s Episcopal School community; and for the Bryant family and the fam-
ilies of all who died.”
Catherine George told NBC News that Payton was an accomplished basketball player who “loved playing for Kobe Bryant. He was a great coach.”
She said Sarah was “the heart of that family,” a devoted mother who spent much of her
time nurturing her children’s talent for sports and the family’s love of travel.
Payton had ambitions to play basketball in high school and college, said her uncle Andy George, a football coach at La Serna High School in Whittier. “She had the sweetest soul – the kindest, … gentlest person you would ever meet,” George told the Orange County Register. “She always had a huge smile on her face. Every time we would see her she would spend all her time with my little daughters.”
George said his sister Sarah was “the one that everybody counted on. She was there for
everyone. She was everything to her family, to our family. Anytime I needed anything,
she was the person I went to.”
