Sekian, terima kasih.

Dear Michaelians and the whole community of SMI,

Greetings of Peace!

I greet you warmly especially on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of yourannual magazine, “THE MICHAELIAN”!

St. Michael’s Institution is now more than a century old! You join many Lasallian institutions in the world thathave recently celebrated their centenary. During such occasions, we often look back to the rich history of ourschool and identify the various milestones that have contributed to what our beloved alma mater is today.

One such milestone for St. Michael’s Institution is the actual laying of the foundation stone of the first schoolbuilding 91 years ago. Constructed in stages for a period of about thirty years, it boasts a lengthy façade thathas earned recognition as a heritage building of Malaysia. The building itself witnessed the progress of theschool from its humble beginnings to its current tradition of providing quality and holistic education to theyouth.

We owe this impressive building to two icons whose examples of being “valiant and true” are ideal for allMichaelians to emulate.

The first icon is well known Brother Vernier - Auguste, the first Brother Director of St. Michael’s Institutionand the man behind the construction and design of the building. With his foresight and careful planning, hedared to build a structure bigger that anything in Ipoh at that time. Despite all difficulties in finances, government permits and criticisms, they were able to open the first part of the building a year after layingthe foundations.

The second icon is Brother Patrick O' Donovan who ensured the survival of St. Michael’s Institution during theSecond World War. He foresaw the increase in enrollment and persisted in procuring government approval forthe expansion of the building paving the way for its final completion in 1951 by his successor. Brother Patrickwas imprisoned during the war and brought the school back to shape as soon as the war was over. Heintroduced Science and Chinese language classes, as well as establishing several school societies including “THEMICHAELIAN” magazine in 1948.

The stories of Brother Vernier - Auguste and Brother Patrick O' Donovan and the Brothers that came after themare worth sharing. Their legacies stand tall and proud, valiant and true. Your glorious history, like the horizontallines of the school building, point a straight and clear direction to follow: “Onward Michaelians, Valiant and True!”

I encourage you to share your inspiring icons to all the Lasallians in Asia and the world. Be assured of myprayers for all of you!

Live Jesus in Our Hearts!

BR. EDMUNDO L. FERNANDEZ FSCBrother Visitor of La Sallian Schools Lasallian East Asia District (LEAD)

13

It is plainly evident that a unique project of all our Lasallian Schools inMalaysia is our School Magazine. It not only serves to recall the eventsfor the year but is a permanent gift that we will cherish all the years ofour life as individuals and as a community of Lasallians.

It is with these sentiments that I on behalf of the La Salle Brothers andthe Lasallian Family in Malaysia share these few thoughts for your Michaelian 2013. It is indeed appropriatethat you have chosen as the theme for this year “Onward Michaelians! Valiant and True”. We can beginwith the assumption that all Michaelians - the Students, Administrators, the Teachers, the Parents, theAlumni and Associates see the need to Move Forward.

But we can also begin with a basic Question: Is our Way Forward A Quest or A Follow-the Rest? It is obviousthat today Life cannot be just about following the Crowd (As some people will say... Ikut saaaaja) but asLasallians to be ready for the onerous and arduous task of blazing a new trail in the wilderness with thepost-modern Y and Z Generation! It is this prophetic trail-blazing adventure in 17th century France by JohnBaptist de La Salle that we are called to revisit in 21st century globalised Malaysia. It is in this new contextthat the word Valiant takes a deeper meaning as a new bravery and ardent steadfastness to the LasallianEducational Mission in Malaysia.

The core challenge of Transforming Lasallian Schools as Michaelians and Lasallians in Malaysia calls for abravery and courage to creatively offer a new model of education with its quality and integrity, uniquepedagogy and participatory approach. We need to focus on holistic education: transforming persons throughcharacter-building and nurturing an ecology inspired by the Lasallian ethos and in association with all themembers of the Lasallian Family. We need to take greater responsibility for the Young, who are facingdifficulties in and outside the school and offer them alternative vocational and career paths. Today this isbravery!!

We need to remind ourselves that we have never been the pliant Crowd; we have always strayed into theDifficult Path ahead of others because we have been VALIANT in our Ways and TRUE to our DREAMS :one that is founded on a Faith that fires the Within, the Hope and Joy that binds us in Association and aLove that can only be measured by the Giver (Educator) and the Receiver (Learner).

BR. ANTHONY ROGERS FSCDirectorChristian Brothers’ Schools Malaysia

14

Greetings of peace and goodwill!

It is my privilege to be still part of the Michaelian scene, on the sidelinesperhaps but still as a committed observer.

There is so much evidence of the Michaelian spirit in the many activities, both daily and seasonal, and in the fine level of participation, in the ever emerging youth leaders whoproudly align themselves with all that is best in our traditions.

While we focus on the achievements let us keep in mind that our Lasallian mission gives priority to thepoor, the unloved, the excluded and the disoriented. These especially need to feel accepted, appreciated, and listened to.

They may not be so visible, we may even have to seek them out to give them appropriate care. Withineach class community, and the larger school community, fellow students who are caring and responsiblecan play a crucial role. We encourage them to do this.

It is also a key concern of both the teacher and the parent, and in some cases professional help may haveto be sought.

We like to rally to our watchword ONWARD MICHAELIANS! VALIANT & TRUE! Let us make sure no one isleft behind.

QUIS UT DEUS

DATO’ BROTHER VINCENT CORKERY

“.....Heaven will e’er protect, sons of St. Michael’s valiant and true!” - I guessthat most of us Michaelians would be humming these words to the tune ofour School Rally when we read them. And surely we shall be duly blessedwith heavenly wellbeing if we remain valiant and true in all that we do.Indeed the seare relevant words of wisdom and inspiration for ending ourschool song, for these values are generally found in wise and respectedleaders and successful people.

There are a few ways to look at what it means to be valiant and true. An example is the principle of keepingtrue to our word or promise, even when it sometimes is inconvenient to do so. By doing so we maintain ourintegrity and build the trust and respect that are necessary for healthy relationships. A simple example, beingpunctual for an appointment is something highly valued by the other party, as few would like to waste theirtime waiting for latecomers. Therefore even if it is really impossible to keep an appointment due to unforeseenand unavoidable events, we could maintain some integrity by informing the other party in advance, or as soonas we can.

Authenticity is another example of being valiant and true. It is important to make a stand for what is rightrather than who is right. It takes courage to say something that is contradictory to the view of one who ispopular, significant or powerful. Therefore some people do tend to go with the flow and say what he thinks ispopular, without deep conviction. Worst still, he goes on to act differently in another environment. Consistencyin a person’s words and deeds defines his personality and character. Imagine the difficulty of dealing with aperson who lacks conviction and changes his stand from time to time.

I would like to share with you that I highly value and seek characteristics of integrity and authenticity in myorganization’s executives and staff. So too would most employers.

A common trait for survival is for one to adapt to the environment and sometimes even to compromise thetruth and principles of right and wrong just to win approval and acceptance amongst peers. Haven’t we seencases of people falling into gangsterism and the habit of smoking and drinking just because of peer pressure? This is but a gentle reminder on the virtues of being valiant and true under social pressure, to stay on theright path and away from trouble.

Abraham Lincoln stoodfirmly for principles of human equality and even declared civil war to fight for libertyand civil rights. Among other noble stands, and under extreme pressure from rich and powerful businessmenand politicians, he steadfastly remained valiant and true, to abolish slavery in the southern states of Americaand confer full citizenship upon ex-slaves.

Being valiant and true are the foundation stones to build healthy, mature, interdependent and mutually fulfillingrelationships between friends, husbands and wives, and business associates. Such values will carry us throughlife successfully. As we enter the second Michaelian century, I wish that these values will continue to beinternalized in all Michaelians.

Onward Michaelians! Valiant and True!

2013 has been a momentous year for your PTA. Because of thecontribution from your parents we were able to assist the schooladministrators in uplifting your schooling experience. Your parentscontribution is appreciated and the cooperation of the schooladministrators is valued. I and my committee members thank you all.

In 2013 your PTA carried out our normal duties with ease as contributions from parents were encouraging. We budgeted for RM30,000 to help needy students. This amount appears large but when broken downwe were only able to help ten students from each Form. I hope that your PTA, through your support willbe able to continue this worthwhile project. I am proud to have been able to represent you all to channelyour contributions towards this cause and thank you for your support. We also undertook the improvementto our staff dining room and toilets. This work may not directly benefit our children but I believe that thepayback can be measured empirically. When our teachers are comfortable they are happy and a happyteacher will bring out the best in our children.

In 2012 your PTA and the Board of Governors decided to plan for a concert hall and car park. Throughthe help of our Second Finance Minister, Dato Seri Husni, who is a Michaelian, we were allocated twohundred thousand ringgit by the Government towards this project. We still have a long way to go beforewe can raise enough funds to complete this project but meanwhile, in December 2013, we have startedthe initial work of clearing the ground first. Your PTA will support the BoG to materialise this project.

We must all believe in a common vision before we can be truly united. I suggest that Michaelians uniteby sharing a common good. As a start, let us look at our founder, St. John De La Salle and his desire tocare for the Last, Lost and the Least and begin from here. Let us embrace this gentleness and kindnesstowards our fellow Michaelians. Let us be identified by our honesty and politeness. When you step outfrom school as a group, let others identfy you as Michaelians; not because of your school badge but becauseof your sportsmanship and fairplay.

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to be of service to this great Institution. I wish you all success inyour strive for Unity and Truth.

Yours sincerely,JOSEPH MICHAEL LEE ONN HEANPTA Chairman, SMK St. Michael, Ipoh

Greetings to SMI Principal Madam Loh Wei Seng, her administrativeteam, staff, students and parents and congratulations on another yearof excellent achievement.

The recent centenary celebrations show-cased SMI as a vibrantcommunity, a key element of our Michaelian heritage. The closebonding of the Board with the PTA and with the Old Michaelians’ Association reflects this sense ofcommunity in a very tangible way.

Highly significant also is the bonding which takes place in the classroom, on the playing field and asmembers of the many uniform groups. This is something we take into life with us and it warms thehearts of Michaelians wherever they go, right into later years.

More than ever it is “Onward Michaelians! Valiant & True”, a worthy tradition that we are happy tohonour and maintain.

Special regards to one and all.

As we reflect on the year which is coming to a close, we are truly grateful for anumber of achievements which have brought glory to the school. To start with,we added a few feathers in the cap by achieving excellent results in the PMR,SPM and STPM examinations. We have 51 students scoring all A’s in the PMR.The school was indeed honored to be awarded with appreciation certificates forgreat improvement in SPM and STPM by the District Education Office.

In the field of sports, our national shot putt champion, R. Meveeqhen, markedhis international debut by winning the bronze medal in both the South-East Asian Youth Athletics Championships 2013in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and the ASEAN Schools Game Athletics 2013 in Hanoi, Vietnam. At the state level co-curricular achievements, St. Michael’s produced state champions in the National Science Challenges, RHB-NST Spell-ItRight and the Pidato 1Malaysia. We also achieved 2nd placing at the state level in Debate, Public Speaking, Tennisand Badminton. Congratulations and thank you teachers, parents and students for your great achievement andcommitment.

I must mention the successful production of our annual drama, this year being “The Lion King” and “The MichaelianTalentime”. This project is traditionally a joint effort between the school and the Old Michaelians Association, withthe strong support of the La Salle Brothers, the Board of Governors, The Parent-Teacher Association, teachers, parentsand students. Our sincere appreciation to all of them especially the drama director, Miss Corrinne Mah and the“Talentime” coordinator Miss Foong Yin Pui. Special thanks to Mr. Adrian Tsen, the main fund-raiser cum President ofthe OMA for his continued and valuable assistance in making the drama a success.

The Michaelian Military Band made another milestone this year by having successfully organised a concert to raisefunds to acquire new instruments. My deepest appreciation to all donors and sponsors, not forgetting the concertedefforts put in by the teacher advisers, band members, parents, teachers and students to make the concert a success. Our academic success and great co-curricular achievements this year have brought us much satisfaction and joy.

The school theme this year, “Onward Michaelians! Valiant & True” is to inspire students to stride forward to be valiantand true Michaelians. It is our ardent hope that we could produce Michaelians who are courageous, determined, faithful and with high integrity. We expect all Michaelians to be well-mannered, respect others and care for one anotherespecially the under-priviledged in line with the slogan of St. Michael’s Institution, “Faith, Service and Community”. Itis a Michaelian tradition to have a school theme as guiding principle to achieve our expectations as stated in thetheme.

I take this opportunity to thank Dato’ Brother Vincent Corkery, the La Salle Brothers, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Lee Oi Hian, members of the Board of Governors, Mr. Adrian Tsen and the OMA, Mr. Joseph Michael Lee, members of the PTA,Mr. Michael Lip and the Klang Valley SMI Alumni Association for their moral, spiritual and financial support.

Lastly, I thank the Editorial Board members for their excellent team work in putting on record all happenings andachievements in school. Their creativity and enterprise skills have undoubtedly succeeded in producing a qualitymagazine. I must also mention the advertisers who continue to support us and individuals who contributed articlesand assisted in editing. My best wishes.

t’s an honour for me to be here to deliver this speech. Never in mywildest dream I have dreamt of giving this speech in front of oldMichaelians, teachers and parents. I have been in this school for eight

years including this year and I am really proud to proclaim myself as a‘Michaelian’. This is because we Michaelians have our own unique way of doingthings that we are assigned to do. The Michaelian spirit which is inherited fromour seniors gets stronger every year.

I would like to thank GOD for what he has given me so far. I owe my deepestgratitude to my alma mater and to my parents especially my mother. Theschool has taught me a lot and it has brought me here. My mother is veryconsiderate and tolerate a lot with me as I have duties to carry on in theschool. I am also thankful to all the teachers who have taught me so farbecause they have moulded me into what I am today. Last but not least Iwould like to thank all my Michaelian brothers and sisters who were right therewhen I needed them.

My mom used to tell me that if only she had a chance she would build ahouse for me in this school because I spend most of my time in school ratherthan at home. When I was a boy scout, the Scout Den became my secondhome whereas now the school has become my second home. The La Sallianculture really has taught me of who I am and what can I do to help others.De La Salle has taught me that giving is more fulfilling than taking.

One thing we Michaelians have in common is that when we put our heart andsoul into what we do, we really do it to our best and that makes others tothink twice before they make up their mind to face us and that is somethingI really cherish. It’s not an easy journey to be where I am today and it’s notgoing to be an easy journey either to excel in life but we have to learn totake life for what it is.

The one thing that I always remind myself of is only a coward stays back anddoes not do anything while a leader takes the first step and strives forwardand learns from mistakes to do well in future.

Before I end my speech I would like to say this “We were born for a reasonand as humans we have to find the reason because at the end of the day thatvery reason is going to define who we are”.

Thank you.

Iinspired me to excel and the Lasallian Brothers whom I’ve crossed path withthat gave me sound advice. My gratitude goes to fellow Michaelians who havejourney faithfully with me throughout my smooth sailing and turbulent times inSt. Michael’s Institution.

It has been a very eventful and fulfilling twelve months serving this school andmeeting many interesting and inspiring people. I still remember the very firsttime I stepped into this school, in awe at the grandeur of the school building,in fear not knowing what to expect from the students here and in love withthe warmth and welcome I received. To be given the opportunity to learn andadopt the Michaelian traditions and culture and the Lasallian values as well asthe experience of working with different kinds of people are lessons I will forevertreasure in my life. St. Michael Institution has taught me the realities of life thatthe journey in achieving something is more important than the destination itself. The thought of being a Lady Michaelian never crossed my mind but theexperience of being one will forever be treasured.

Fellow Michaelians,

Life is but of many pit stops in a Formula One race. It is necessary to makethese stops, to improve, to change as well as to learn but I daresay, these stopsthat you have made or are going to make will be of great help to spur you onto your final destination. Behind every trial and turbulation lies a great lesson.Let us not forget our principles and ethics that have brought us this far and letus stand firm together as Michaelians in bringing the school to greater heights.

still recall how I thanked my lucky stars to be in such a great school. I remembered my parents telling me that it’simperative to be conspicuous amongst the crowd and create a good first impression as it will always be lasting. Havingthis in mind, I walked into this wonderful school with pride and burning desire to emerge as an exemplary student.

I wish to wholeheartedly express my utmost respect and deepest gratitude towards the headmistress, Madam Loh WeiSeng, teachers, friends and of course my parents for their continuous support and motivation which spurred me up tomaintain my stance of consistently attaining good academic records throughout the years in this school. Their endlesssupport bolstered my sports trail as well, starting from scratch from merely representing the school to representingthe district, and then the state and eventually the country. In May 2013, I made a significant achievement by winningthe gold medal in the Nationals, MSSM 2013 for the Under 18 boys shot putt event. I made a breakthrough by enjoyinga meteoric rise to the international arena, representing the country and bagging the bronze medals in both the SEAYouth Athletics Championships in Ho Chi Minh and ASEAN Schools Games in Hanoi both held in June 2013. With myoutstanding performance in the ASEAN Schools meet where I had set a personal best, I qualified to the World YouthChampionships 2013 held in Donetsk, Ukraine in July which was the meet I was most cognizant and fully focused onfrom the beginning of the year but I was denied the opportunity to compete due to technical hitches. I then had themost propitious experience throughout my sports trail, competing with fellow athletes all around Asia in the AsianSchools Meet held in Pahang where I emerged 4th placing.

Throughout the busy year, my committed teachers were the biggest pillars of support in my academics as they guidedand helped me out altruistically, ensuring that I possess the best of both worlds. Some were even willing to sacrificetheir time after school to assist me in developing a clearer understanding regarding a particular subject. I couldn’t thankthese educators more. I was also offered to join the Bukit Jalil Sports School but I staunchly declined it due to myindescribable affection towards the alma mater, living by the saying “Once a Michaelian, always a Michaelian”. Beingentitled as a Michaelian isn’t just a pride but truly is a lifetime’s treasure. The Michaelian Spirit flames in me whereverI go. Being a Michaelian has truly imparted essential moral values in me. I’m greatly inspired by the countless numberof former Michaelians who have developed and entrenched the legacy St. Michael’s Institution has today.

Patience, perseverance and courage are the most important values we Michaelians should adorn in living a virtuouslife. I am thankful to the Lord for introducing these true people of the Michaelian community who enriched my life asthey have unfailingly stood by me through thick and thin throughout my years in this school. Lastly, I would like toseize this opportunity to wish all Michaelians a great success in their future endeavors.

Onward Michaelians, Valiant and True.Thank you.

t. Michael’s success, long-standing presence and strong reputation in the communityare mainly attributed to a team of very committed and determined members whosit on its Board of Governors.S

Besides ensuring that the rich La Salliantradition and character of St Michael’sInstitution are closely preserved, thegovernors have always hold firmly totheir instrumental role as custodian topreserve the values, heritage and ethosof Lasallian education among thestudents.

The Board has never forsaken the needsof “the last, the lost and the least” at St.Michael’s. It provides financial assistancefor the marginalised in the schoolpopulation. One such program is to hireteaching personnel to conduct extraclasses in core subjects to assist the students academically. This is in line with ourcommitment to support our young people in every way as they begin to make their way inthe world.

We look forward to a future which not only consolidates the roles of the De La Salle’s andour teachers, but which sees the standards of the school continue to rise, focussing on theLasallian ideals of “Faith,Service and Community”.

Report on the

OLD MICHAELIANS...................................................................................................................................................................................................................

irstly, we would like to take a minute to remember our past honorary secretaryMr. Harneak Singh who passed on in April 2013. We remember his tirelesscontributions and selfless sacrifices towards the Michaelian cause as an old boy andF

through his tenure as the secretary of the Old Michaelians Association. The late Harneakwas instrumental in realizing the setting up of the Michaelian Heritage Gallery and compilingthe many historical facts of the school. For many of us, Harneak Singh remains strong inour memory.

Staying true and faithful to the alma mater, OMA continued to bring the old boys togetherthrough its popular annual dinners. For three consecutive years, 2011, 2012 (being St.Michael’s Centennial Celebration) and this year, the excitement among the old boys wasparticularly felt as the dinners and gatherings were held at St. Michael’s grounds. Thegatherings of thousands of old boys, members of the Lasallian alumni nationwide and well-wishers from many corners of the world had indeed brought the Michaelian community muchcloser.

We also reached out to the needy, particularly students who were in need of financialassistance to acquire workbooks, shoes or uniforms. It’s our way to give back to the almamater. Our annual visit to the residents at Asrama Bintang, a home for aged women withintellectual, physical and emotional difficulties, forms the main part of our agenda. It wouldalways be a time for fellowship, dinner and to distribute financial aid.

OMA continued to assist the school in strengthening the tradition of performing arts in St.Michael’s - this year being “The Lion King”. We wish to thank the Principal, teachers, thedirector Miss Corrinne Mah, the crew and the cast for such a brilliant and superbperformance.

OMA has good working relationships with the BOG headed by Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian, PTA underthe leadership of Mr. Joseph Michael Lee and SMI Principal Madam Loh Wei Seng. We alsomaintain a good relationship with the Brothers and other Lasallian Associations

A brief discussion about school matters was later held at the OMA Secretariat. Also presentat the simple session were Sector Leader for Malaysia, Brother Anthony Rogers, BrotherVincent Corkery and Brother Matthew Bay.

Brother David was obviously amazed with the school’s efforts in keeping the Lasallian ethosand tradition alive. The entourage also met up with teachers and students.

At the school parlour, Brother David was similarly impressed when he noticed that awardsfor the “Michaelian of The Year” were presented in honour of past Superior-General BrotherNicet-Joseph. (Brother Nicet visited SMI in 1962 and the first recipient of “Michaelian of theYear” was accorded to commemorate his visit. Brother Nicet was S-G from 1956-1966).According to Brother David, St Michael’s is the only school which remembers Brother Nicetthis way.

On behalf of all Michaelians, we express our appreciation to Brother David and BrotherRogers for spending some time with us.

(LATIHAN DALAM PERKHIDMATAN)ADALAH SEPERTI BERIKUT:

aying goodbye to the students, teachers and staff of St. Michael’swas not an easy thing to do for Madam Choong Sau Han as shehad always considered the school as her second home.S

Posted to the last port of call on 1st January 1991 from SMK Seri PuteriIpoh in 1990, Mrs. Yee, as she was fondly known, had spent a period of22 years in St. Michael’s Ipoh.

She is known among her colleagues as one exemplary teacher and this, perhaps as much as anything else, inspired and motivated those around her.

Mrs. Yee, through the eyes of many, could do the job really well, hadbags of enthusiasm, always on the move and her presence itself created healthy atmosphere and team-work.

Throughout her service, Mrs. Yee was twice recognised by the Ministry of Education by being awarded the ExcellenceService Award in 1995 and 2008.

She was the department head for Science and Mathematics from 2005 to 2008 before she was promoted as Sixth Formacademic teacher in 2008.

Mrs. Yee obtained her primary and secondary education in Main Convent Ipoh after which she studied Sixth Form inSt. Michael. Her excellent results enabled her to further her studies in University Science of Malaysia, Penang, majoringin Chemistry and Mathematics. She graduated in 1979.

Puan Thevanai described Mrs. Yee as a very dedicated lady who puts students above self, working tirelessly to give herbest to the students.

“Being a devout Christian, she has practised a strong sense of right and wrong”, said Puan Thevanai, a colleague andfriend of Mrs. Yee.

For me, Mrs. Yee has outstanding commitment and her outstanding ability to impart knowledge to her charges in theclassroom makes her stand out above the rest.

Happy Retirement, Mrs. Yee. We hope that you will maintain a relationship with the school for a long time to come.

The PRODUCTION TEAMof A NIGHT OF DOUBLE JOY

St. Michael’s Institution’s recent annual drama offering “A Night of Double Joy’which featured the play ‘The Lion King’ and followed by Talentime 2013 wasindeed that, a night of double joy. As in previous years the play was somethingto look forward to as the students put forward their best performance eachnight.

This year’s offering, The Lion King was no exception. The overall production, lights, set and music were spot on. However, this year’s costumes and makeup were anotch about previous years possibly owing to the variety of animal roles in themusical.

The Talentime 2013 was indeed a bonus. The contest was divided into threecategories : Solo, Group and Open and served its purpose by allowing thestudents to showcase their hidden talents. The Solo category was won byArvinderan on guitar, the Pistache Brothers for Group and Remeinesce under theOpen category for their energetic dance performance.

SMI Principal Madam Loh Wei Seng was right to say that the school “indeed hada lot of talented students” and it was clearly demonstrated when the MichaelianMilitary Band closed the night with their rendition of PSY’s popular number‘Gangnam Style’, slick moves and all.

The OMA dinner held on 28th September 2013 was another success, judging by the overwhelmed response bythe regular old boys who wanted to be with their friends every year.

For many, it was an annual meeting in Ipoh and at SMI to catch up the latest news, perhaps for a day or a few hoursthen they would part ways for yet another round of get-together the following year.

It was for that reason, old Michaelians consider the annual dinners as a must-attend affair. The OMA dinner is nowconsidered as a balik kampung.

Just as the OMA president Mr. Adrian Tsen said in his message, "It warms the hearts of Michaelians coming from farand near to return to the old school, so full of memories for them, above all the majestic building - the pillar and iconof Michaelian pride".

Many are already asking when the 2014 dinner is held and the answer is always the last Saturday of September everyyear. If Saturday is the day, then balik kampung would probably start on Thursday or Friday with family members intow. Friday and Saturday morning are usually a tour in the school, showing proudly to their spouses and children theclassrooms they studied in or the places they usually hang out with their friends etc.

The dinner this year gathered about 900 old boys at the basketball court with guests from other La Salle schools like St.George's, St. Paul's and members from the SMI KL Alumni. Brother Vincent and Brother Matthew Bay were also with us.

The committee members were pleased that theirmonths of preparations had indeed culminatedwith many happy faces and heaps of praisesfrom many. We are looking forward to nextyear's dinner but as of now, it's time to take abreak.

I take the opportunity to thank school principalMdm. Loh Wei Seng, her teacher advisers incharge of the Military Band (Mr. Liew Boon Ket),prefects (Mr. Karu) and scouts (Mr. Christopher)for their strong support in making the occasionspecial and memorable.

MR. JOSEPH MICHAEL LEE

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE SPEECH DAY?I think that the speech day is an important occasion where excellentstudents must be recognized due to all the hard work they wentthrough. The Speech Day is also an event to motivate students to dobetter in the upcoming future.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE SCHOOL AND THESTUDENT’S ACHIEVEMENTS?The overall achievements of the academic results are acceptable. Inmy point of view, Michaelians are not supposed to focus ONLY onacademics. All Michaelians should be all-rounders. Besides, Michaeliansno matter who they are, from a rich or a poor family are all equal. There should NOT be any discrimination among students. Studentswho are excellent in both academic and co-curricular activities shouldguide the weak so that all students could perform well in bothacademic and co-curricular.

For example, our outstanding athletes of the year 2013, Meveeqhenhave been doing a very good job. His academic results are acceptable.I would just like to say that his performances so far are outstanding.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR THE SCHOOL TO FINDANOTHER STUDENT WHO IS AN ALL-ROUNDER THATEXCELS IN BOTH ACADEMIC AND CO-CURRICULARACTIVITIES?If all Michaelians do have an optimistic mind-set that allows him /her to strive to achieve great success in both academics and co-curricular, there will be many more students with extraordinaryperformance in both academic and co-curricular activities such as ourfriend Meveeqhen. I am very sure that by then, another Meveeqhenwill be born and rise very soon!

YANG BERBAHAGIADATO’ BROTHER VINCENT CORKERY

CONVERSATIONA with

............................................................................................................................... ................................................................................

How long have Brother Vincent stayedin Ipoh?I’ve been living in Ipoh for almost 56 years.Ipoh had a population of 100,000 people inthe 50s. Now, it has gone up to 700,000people. Back then, we could see people livingin multi story apartments hanging theirbaskets outside the windows till they reachedthe ground floor for trading purposes. Somepeople would just wear their pajamas in theevening and leisurely walk around town.

What are the changes seen in St. Michael Institution compared to the previousyears?Back in those days, the school was always occupied by students from day till night. For example, the field was always packed with students having their own sports activities. It was really hard toundergo maintenance to the field then as the field was virtually used non-stop! It pleases the eyeswhen you see students sweat it out in the field.

However, the scenario has changed. What I notice nowadays is the field looks green, contrary tothose days when the grass had no time to grow at all. Students leave the school compound rightafter the school bell rings. Back in those days, St. Michael’s was more like a home, not “just a school”.

Many students back then would stay in the school to study until night in the library. Compared tonow, the library is less favored by students. Sadly, the school has gone quiet as time goes by.

What’s the story behind the building of the 6th Form Block? In 1968, we managed to build the 6th Form Block. The cost for the building was around RM700,000.Unfortunately, we had only RM40,000 with us. When Brother Paul gave us the green light to continuewith building the 6th Form Block, we pooled our resources and tried all sorts of way to overcomethe financial problem. We had class collection every month, involving the primary and secondarystudents. Every student carried a special card to keep track of their collections. Everyone played theirroles. We worked really hard. At the end of the month we managed to acquire around RM40,000.It was a really great success to manage to build the 6th Form Block with all the hard work fromeveryone! Yes, we named it, “Brother U Paul Block”, to remember his optimism and his faith in us.

How was the school library back in those days?At first, we had our library at the ground floor of the main building. It opened from 5am till 10pmevery day back in the 80s’. To ensure more comfort for the students, it was time to add more booksand to expand. We identified an ideal location at Brother U Paul Block. We managed to clear 3classrooms at the second floor of the building and shifted the library there. It remains until today.

We call it the Marian Library.

What’s the magnificent story behind the sculpture in the school library? The Marian Library has a famous sculpture, “Falcon and the Falconer”.

It is made up of welded steels mostly reused from damaged car bumpers and other unwanted steelmaterials. This sculpture acts as a reply to the poem “The Second Coming” by Irish poet WilliamButler Yeats in 1919. Part of the poem images a falcon wheeling about the sky, far away from thefalconer who released it. The bird continues to wheel and gyre further and further away from thefalconer. This metaphor stands for young people who have given up the standards of their parentsand grandparents.

The sculpture features a falconer stretching out the whole body and a falcon on the hand.

The falcon lies right on top of the falconer’s hand freely, without any obstruction. It shows that thefalconer gives freedom to the falcon, but also giving support and guidance to it. It reflects vividlythat parents should give freedom to young people and support them as well.

What was the inspiration for introducing the class marching tradition?Class marching is a very unique tradition in St. Michael‘s Institution. We used to have house marchingonly before we implemented this. Students would be chosen from the four respective houses tomarch. This caused weaker students to be neglected among the students. The idea of class marchingsolves this problem. Now, every single student, strong or weak, is required to march together withhis classmates, a practice which makes everyone equal. Teamwork can be nurtured as studentsundergo vigorous marching practice, including the designing of the class flags and sometimes, theclass T-shirts. Class marching produces more student leaders and increase the discipline level in them.

What is your advice for fellow Michaelians, Brother? There’s a story of a 17-years old girl named Joanne from North Cork. She was born with a rarecondition, total Amelia (birth defect), which left her limbless. She’s able to grip her iPhone betweenchin and what she calls her left hand. Joanne can text at a speed faster than anyone else just byusing her upper and lower lip! Such achievement is rare but not impossible! This girl always givesme a superb motivation on how we must live our life to the fullest.

Michaelians, there are many people in this world who can inspire and give us motivation in life.Discover them and know their stories. Always make yourself a better person!

Another thing is Michealians should always continue their journey to discover the potential in them.No matter how hard life could be, Michaelians must always be strong and tough to face anysituations which challenge them. I believe that being in St. Michael’s is a great opportunity to discoveryour talent.

Unleash the potential in yourselves, Michaelians.

Note : The Interview with Brother Vincent was carried out at the La Salle Centre, Ipoh. It was apleasant and candid interview. We started the interview at 1.40pm, on 18 October 2013 and by2.45pm, it was time to wrap up the session. Brother Vincent, to me, is a walking heritage. He knowsso much about St. Michael’s and still possesses sharp memory about things that are close to hisheart. This interview will not be the last…

MASTER TIMOTHY CHEEINTERVIEWAn

with

How were your early days in St. Michael’s whileyou were still studying?I was schooling in St. Michael’s Institution in the 1940s. I didnot have to pay the school fees as I was a free scholar backthen. I was actively involved with the scouts I was a Kingscout and also an instructor for the Girl Guides of someschools when I was in Form 4. I was also a regular painterof the stage props for the annual school dramas. I would sayI was a quiet and timid person in school. Life was not easyas I had to juggle between school and helping my father inhis construction work.

How did you become a teacher?I started off as an Arts subject teacher when I was in Form4 on Brother Paul’s request. I taught the primary schoolstudents in the afternoon after my morning school session. It was a voluntary work as I felt it was a way to give backto the school because the school had supported me in myschooling fees. After Form 5, I went back to school to teachGeography to Form 4 students and Arts to Form 6 students.I later went for teacher’s training in St. Joseph’s TrainingCollege under the school and church’s scholarship. Two yearslater, I came back to teach at St. Michael’s again.

What were your fondest memories in St. Michael’s, both as a student and a teacher?I can recall back when I was in Form 2, I took part in a concert held in the school. I did a dance and it was myfirst exposure to the world of arts and what the stage really was. I also learnt a lot from the teachers backthen who handled us boys in a very disciplined manner. Whatever they say, the boys will do. I think thatexperience really helped me to develop as a teacher in my later years. Another memorable thing was duringmy time, we managed to produce 30 plus King scouts at one time, a record which stands till today. As a teacher,my fondest memories were all etched in the dramas that I produced. The experiences that I had working withthe boys, helping them develop the skills which they did not think they have it initially and seeing the endproduct were simply priceless.

Who inspired you the most?I would say it has to be my family. My parents really supported my ambition to be a teacher and they neversaid no when I had to stay back to teach in school or for scouts. Most of my family members are either teachersor nurses and I think that has influenced me in a way.

Can you enlighten us about our annual school drama? Our school drama started way back. In those days, the Brothers were the directors of the plays. The main castswere taken by the school teachers while the students helped out as supporting actors or as stage crews. Ourdrama tradition was really strong and at one point, our school drama team went all the way to the nationallevel in the interschool drama competition. Our dramas are full of plot and values that are portrayed in theirown unique way. It is the identity of our alma mater.

I magine. Imagine living in the 1900’s, a period of time whenmost of the citizens struggled to make ends meet. Imagine thehardships that they went through to pursue their education.

Imagine technology hasn’t evolved from that era. Assortment of thingslike information and knowledge couldn’t be reached at our fingertips.Teachers played a crucial role in children’s lives in order to mouldthem to be a better person.

Filled to the brim with wisdom, this is Master Choo Ah Chye. Hewas a rugby player and a disciplinary teacher. As for now, he travelsaround the country after his retirement, reads and participates insports during his spare time. Occasionally, Master will drop by the La

Salle Centre to visit the Brothers. On the day of interview, Master Choodrove to school on a lovely morning with a blue car and came out ofthe car with a gracious smile, hands equipped with a water bottle anda book to be donated to our school library.

Master Choo attended SMK Methodist ACS Ipoh back then wherehe was actively involved in the rugby tournament and training, representing schools, state and country that brought about the nameof Malaysia to a higher level. However, all things did not go smoothlyat all times. Master once injured his elbow and paid the hospital avisit several times. Besides, Master Choo was a rugby coach too!

Teaching is an incredibly important profession and without theteachers, the child’s development will suffer a lot. Master Chooenjoyed teaching in SMI because of the hospitality of the school staff

and the uplifting environment created bythem. Master Choo had an extraordinaryway of dealing with those problematicstudents back then. He would makestudents write a paper full of letters andcollect fines from them. The fines collectedwere contributed to the school, which wasa noble act indeed. Until now, MasterChoo’s students can still recognise him inthe crowd and shout and greet him.

eorge Eliot once said, “Only in the glory of pasting de we look into the depth oflove”.

Ng Thew Foong, also known as Mrs. Chin, the laboratory assistant who had served in ourschool for 20 years bade goodbye as she left St. Michael’s Institution to continue her career atSMK Menglembu, Ipoh only bringing along the unforgettable experiences and memories ofinteresting incidents she encountered throughout her service.

Being a staff here at SMI for the past two decades was truly a blessing, she said it gaveher an incredible opportunity to assist students of different generations and to work under sixprincipals who include Brother Paul, Brother Vincent, Mr. Chong Suan Ee, Mr. Balasubramaniam,Mr. Teh Chor Aun, Mr. Louis Rozario Doss, Mr. Phoon Chong Chee and Pn. Loh Wei Seng. Beforeshe started her career in SMI, she worked at an old Michaelian’s clinic. After going throughinterviews and practical examinations, she was posted to be a laboratory assistant in SMI.Although she was new to the job, with the help and guidance of Mr. Austin de’ Silva, a juniorassistant, she further learned the tricks of the trade.

When questioned what were some of the mistakes she made during her service, Mrs. Chinproudly gave herself a pat on the back followed by a giggle and claimed herself as a perfectionistwho’s always on time and handles dangerous apparatus as well as the chemicals with carepreventing occurrence of serious incidents. She recalled one of her unforgettable experiencewhen SMI was reported to have a bomb in the building. Over the years, our laboratory assistantcultivated valuable friendships with which she spent cherishable moments. Among those arePn. Lee, Cikgu Sohot, Pn. Rohana and Pn. Rosilawati.

Mrs. Chin concluded the session with a few words from the bottom of her heart.

“I’m not sad that I’m leaving but I’m happy that it happened after 20 years. I value myexperience in SMI more than anything else and after spending a solid 20 years in this institution,I might drive here accidentally instead of heading to my new work place. The administrators, staff and teachers will be dearly missed as they taught me so much over the years. Not onlythat, I will miss the delightful smell of laboratory and the times I used to walk up and downalong the corridors. All thebest!”

Although it is upsetting tolet go of an experienced stafflike Mrs. Chin, we wish her allthe best for contributing to thisinstitution through herdedicated service.

This year’s Spell it Right competition had anew format. A written preliminary spelling testwas introduced this year. The written component consisted of 30 words- 10 each in the easy, medium and difficultcategories.Only the top 100 contestants get to advanceto each state challenge to vie for the bestspeller title at the National Finals in KualaLumpur on 19th October 2013.Over 500 participants registered for the secondary level writtentest in Perak, a record high in the history of SIR Challenge.Three (3) St. Michael’s Institution students took part in thisyear’s Spell it Right competition, they were;Derek Leong (4Sc5)Darren Leong (2A9)Tharun (2A6)

All 3 students qualified from the written test held on 30th June2013 at Kolej Masterskill, Jalan Kuala Kangsar, Ipoh as one of the top 100 spellers. On 6th October 2013, the Perak legof the Spell-it-Right was held at the Taiping Sentral Mall. The 100 students were divided into 10 Batches of 10 students each. The students of each batch are seated on stage and each of them is given a word to spell and for those who spelltheir word correctly, they remain on stage. For those who misspell their word, sadly, their journey in this year’s competition ends. For the remaining students, they go through another round of words with the level of difficulty in each round increasinguntil only one student remained. The winners of each batch goes through to the Final (total of 10 Finalists). Our boys performance in the Preliminary Round were as follows;Derek Leong was eliminated after spelling “credentials “correctly but misspelt “androgynous”Tharun was eliminated after spelling “antagonist“ correctly but misspelt “teetotaller”Darren Leong spelt “extinguish” and “eschew” correctly but tripped up on “scripophily”. He managed to recover to spell“carafe” correctly to qualify for the Final. In the Final, the 10 Finalists were each given 3 words to spell.Darren Leong was the only one to spell all his 3 words correctly. His words were “idoneous”, “infomediary” and“instauration”Darren Leong will now represent Perak at the Spell it Right National Finals at Auditorium Kompleks Kementerian DalamNegeri (KDM) Wilayah Persekutuan in Kuala Lumpur (on 19th October 2013).

e’ve learnt to expect the unexpected butnever in our wildest dream that we‘llthink of getting to the finals of STAR NIE

video category. Our initial aim was to just have funand experience video making. We practically joinedon a whim without much planning. We then realizedlater the decisions we made on a whim cost ustremendous hardwork. Video making is definitely notan easy task, coming up with the story, then planningthe scenes in second precisions, filming the video andfinally editing. With zero knowledge in IT field, thework is so much harder for us.

We wanted our video to be able to connect withothers and generally the title of our video is thegeneral message of our video. In case you’ve missedit, the title of our video is ‘A for Acceptance’. It maysound simple but it holds significant meaning. Whenwe were young, alphabets is the first thing we learntin English, followed by spelling and sentences. ‘A forapple’ for example. Instead of learning something thatis so common, we would like to spread a message oflearning that cannot be found in textbooks; but alesson that brings us to act beyond the box that welined in and a lesson that can bring happiness andharmony. That is, of course, the lesson of acceptance.Learning to accept is a lesson for each and everyoneof us and that basically is the message that ought tobe conveyed through our video, to remind people toaccept what might not favor us the most, but whatmight bring out the best in others.

Discontentment and frustrationwere not unusual for our group. However, we still made it through. And we believe that because westarted everything from scratch andthrough our own effort, getting to thefinals really meant a lot to us. It’s asif our hardwork has been paid off andrecognized.

On 17 October 2013, we attendedthe Star NiE 2013 Finals at KotaDamansara Pizza Hut. We wereaccompanied by our teacher advisor,Puan Shafinaz (someone who guidedus all along the video making processand we wouldn’t be anywhere near

what we accomplished without her, THANK YOUTEACHER!). The event proceeded very smoothly fromspeeches to the performance of the tale spincontestant. We were very amazed by the tale spincontestant! Their performance was very creative andthey showed great courage by performing in front ofthe crowd. After the performances, what we had longwaited for has finally came -the video category. The3 finalist video were shown and voted by theaudience to determine the winning video. Our group,Bulletproof video was shown last. After watching thevideo by ACS Ipoh, our hope to win was literallycrushed because their video was really professionallymade. However, I think our group had truly won overthe audience. It was a victorious moment when theaudience was just sat back and enjoyed the ourvideo. Compared to winning, this meant more to us.The audience were laughing, clapping and connectedto the video! The audience liked our video!

It‘s really disappointing that our video wasn’t thewinning video, but this competition is truly amemorable event for all our members. Video makingmight be our once in a life time experience as wemay not get a second chance. It might be on a whim, but we never regretted the decisions and mostimportantly, we never gave up. Sometimes we shouldjust follow our heart, do our best, and things mightjust turn out better than what we expect! So, let‘slive to our heart’s content and enjoy!
