T HE E DIFIER Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and the things wherewith one may edify another (Rom. 14:19) Walnut Street Church of Christ Volume 50 October 11, 2020 Number 40 Word at Walnut Street Bryan McAlister The What a great day for a 4x4 Off Road Trip! Be watching for details for our next Off-Road Event! Our political and cultural landscape is always in a state of change. God’s word is not silent when it comes to understanding the role of culture in response to a relationship with God. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His own inheritance” (Psalm 33:12). Literally, the nation will be happy whose God is the Lord, or ruler. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). Doing what is right based on what God has called right, lifts up a nation among all others. “The authorities that exist are appointed by God” (Romans 13:1). Authorities which exist; exist because of God. They may not always act in the manner God would desire, but such is the power of free-will choice. As we see the landscape of our world changing and the people around us, we see a movement away from principles of faith and trust in God, and more toward a trust in our man’s reasoning, intellectualism, and understanding. We will not see the change God desires through the promotion of a political policy, candidate, entertainer, or superstar. The only lasting and useful change we can hope to see in our world around us is through the promotion of the good news message of Jesus Christ. Our nation has not always rejected God. Consider these excerpts from court cases which were tried in the United States. Notice the language used to describe the high regard given to Christianity. People v. Ruggles, 1811“Whatever strikes at the root of Christianity tends manifestly to the dissolution of civil government…because it tends to corrupt the morals of the people, and to destroy good order.” Church of the Holy Trinity v. U.S., 1892 “The happiness of a people and the good order and preservation of civil government essentially depend upon piety, religion, and morality.” Charleston v. Benjamin, 1846 “What constitutes the standard of good morals? Is it not Christianity? ...The day of moral virtue in which we live would, in an instant, if that standard were abolished, lapse into the dark and murky night of pagan immorality.” Looking one hundred fifty years to the future reveals not all advances are beneficial. The challenges Christianity faces from the culture today, are challenges which come in the form of conformity and complacency. As people of faith, we must always present ourselves to God to be His interments, lest we become the instruments of the world’s deceptive ploys in the hands of those who “know not God, and obey not the gospel” (II Thessalonians 1:7). Preaching the word, openly, honestly, lovingly and fully must be our priority (II Timothy 4:3-4). For too long, the pattern of belief of many has been, whatever religious reforms take place in people’s lives, they must not interfere with the culture of the people. Today especially, when culture and Christianity collide, all too often Christianity is made to concede to the demands of culture, when it was never intended to be this way. There is no better time than now, in the midst of chaos, strife, and despair, than for you and I to shine brightly the light of the gospel of Jesus that will bring the freedom of truth to enslaved hearts.
