Keynote Speaker
Karyn Callaghan was the Program Coordinator and Lecturer in the Bachelor of Early Childhood
Studies program at Charles Sturt University, and is the Founder and Coordinator of the Artists at the
Centre – Making Thinking Visible project. Since 1997, she has been exploring the philosophy that
has guided the early education programs in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Karyn is currently President of the
Ontario Reggio Association, a National Director of the Canadian Association for Young Children,
and a board member of the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance. Karyn has authored and
co-authored articles published in national and international journals, and has been a keynote
speaker at conferences across Canada, the United States, Asia and Australia. She has also
participated in preparing support materials for the Ministry of Education for its Think, Feel, Act and
How Does Learning Happen? documents. A book entitled Documenting Children’s Meaning:
Engaging in Design and Creativity with Children and Families, co-authored by Karyn, Carol Anne
Wien, and artist Jason Avery has been published by Davis Publications.
O ur views of children, teaching, and learning are changing. When
we see children as competent protagonists in their own learning,
we must consider a shift from planning activities to embracing
the concept of co-constructing contexts where we teach and
learn together. This includes environment, and also encompasses temporal,
relational, and pedagogical aspects of what we do. It comes back to having
a complex view of children, teaching, and learning, and engaging in
pedagogical documentation and critical reflection.

Morning Sessions 10:15 am - 12:15 pm
Exp oration of Pedagogica Doc mentation
In this session, we will explore the potential for pedagogical documentation to reveal educators' thinking and
learning. We have tended to focus on how documentation makes the children's thinking visible, but if it
doesn't also help us to reflect on our own thinking, we are not mining it deeply enough. Participants are asked
to bring a piece of documentation “in the works” and we will collaborate in small groups to offer questions to
each other that open new possibilities for learning.
