Protecting our skin from harmful ultraviolet rays is essential during the summer. Ultraviolet rays are an invisible form of energy traveling through space. These rays can penetrate the skin layers and disrupt the structure of skin cells. There are three types of UV rays: ultraviolet A (UVA), ultraviolet B (UVB), and ultraviolet C (UVC). UVA and UVB are the two types that can penetrate the top layer of human skin, and increased exposure can put us at risk for developing skin cancer. UVC is the most damaging, however, it is completely filtered by the atmosphere and does not reach the earth's surface. Sunlight exposure is highest during the summer months between 10:00 am and 4:00pm. Working and playing outdoors during these peak times can increase your risk of sunburn. Sunburn is skin damage directly caused by UV radiation from the sun. Symptoms of sunburn are redness, swelling, and scaling. Tips to avoid sunburn: Wear sunscreen and protective clothing even on

cloudy days. UV rays still affect the skin even when there is overcast.

At the minimum, apply SPF 30 sunscreen and reapply sunscreen every two hours, after swimming and if you are sweating a lot.
