I greet you all on this very joyous occasion of the 50
Anniversary in Coral Gables!
This is an historical moment in the life of the
Cathedral. These moments are unforgettable and
help to realize our mission by renewing our
commitment to God in all we do. I remember when I
first came to the United States from Brazil in 1959.
Saint George Cathedral was the first Church I visited
in 1959.
I served here for a short while as a Deacon under
late Father Michael Husson. This is my first Church in this blessed
country and it was my first step. This is history for me.
I offer my sincerest thanks to the Committee who worked very hard to
remember this moment. I am deeply grateful to you.
I congratulate you all and I pray God grants many years to Saint George
Cathedral and all the families who call her home!
Your Father in Christ,

I am so very pleased to join with my highly esteemed
and well-loved brother, His Grace Bishop Antoun of
the Diocese of Miami and the Southeast, in
celebration of the 50th Anniversary of his Cathedral
of Saint George's presence in Coral Gables.
Eis polla eti, despota!
I pray God's richest blessings and many years for
Father Saba, Archdeacon David and all the faithful
of the Cathedral parish family, and God's mercy and
memory eternal for Fathers Spyridon Dora, Louis Secabe, Basil Sedaoui,
Michael Husson and the founders, benefactors, beautifiers and
members of this holy Cathedral now departed this life.
I am truly honored to be among you this weekend!

Your Grace Bishop ANTOUN,
Your Grace Bishop BASIL,
Reverend Clergy,
Esteemed Members of the Cathedral Council,
The Faithful of Saint George Cathedral,
Friends and Supporters, Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I greet you joyfully on this historic occasion of Saint George Cathedral's 50th
Anniversary in Coral Gables!
It truly is a blessing to have celebrating with us His Grace Bishop ANTOUN
and His Grace Bishop BASIL. This alone is historic to welcome them and
have them in our midst. May God grant them many years!
Saint George Cathedral was first established in 1953 in Miami with the purpose
of having a home for the Orthodox Christian community to worship and give
thanks to God for all His blessings. In 1966, 50 years ago, a new home was
found in Coral Gables. To celebrate 50 years is to celebrate 50 years of
Orthodox Christian witness. 50 years of service, 50 years of giving. 50 years
of growth, 50 years of joys, of pains, of tears, of sacrifice, of labor, of life, of
dedication, of Stewardship, of love, of development, of vision.
A vision for the future.
Today, the future begins. Today, the next 50 years begin. Today, growth
continues. Dedication continues, labor continues, development continues,
sacrifice continues. Giving continues.
Today, I thank all those who labored in the early years and in 1966. They have
produced fruits for generations to come.
I thank those who labor and sacrifice for the well being of this Cathedral, some
of whom will be recognized tonight for their efforts. Congratulations to all the
recipients!
I thank Mrs. Haifa Khoury and her committee for their diligence and hard work
in making this weekend possible. May God bless them all!
I wish you all a Happy 50th
Anniversary and I pray to the Almighty God to
continue bestowing his heavenly grace upon this community! And we continue
offering thanks as the Apostle Paul teaches the Corinthians, "For it is all for
your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people, it may increase
Thanksgiving, to the glory of God." (II Corinthians 4:15)
Yours in Christ,
Father Fouad Saba

He was elected Chairman of the Dade County Probate Committee in 1988
Founder, Lecturer and permanent Chairman of the Dade County Bar Association’s

culminating in the purchase on August 31, 1966 of the Temple Judea facilities at 320

George in the purchase of two adjacent pieces of property and other legal matters.
In 1961 George was elected a member and Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the

RICHARD HORWICH
Richard was born in 1931 and grew up in Oak
Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He earned
a business degree in accounting summa cum
laude, a law degree summa cum laude and a
Master of Laws in Taxation, all from the
University of Miami. He was involved in
numerous activities at the University, from the
debating team and the Law Review, to the highest men's honorary
group, Iron Arrow, where he served as Chief.
At the University he met Sonya Pallot, a native Miamian. They
married in January 1953 and on their wedding day joined Temple
Judea (then called Coral Gables Jewish Center), and they have
remained members continuously ever since.
After law school, Richard took the CPA examination and received the
highest score in the nation. However, he changed to the practice of law
in 1955 and he practiced law in Miami and Coral Gables from then
until his retirement earlier this year.
Also in 1955, Richard, Sonya and their eight-month old first child,
Mitchell, moved into their present home in Coral Gables. Their
daughter, Francine, and their younger son, Ronald, were born in 1957
and 1960.
All three children received religious training in the religious school
and youth activities of Temple Judea. Richard and Sonya became
active in the Temple, including Sonya serving two terms as president
of the women's group and Richard two terms as president of the
Temple. They still attend services almost every week and many other
Temple functions as well. Their daughter and her family are also active
members of Temple Judea.
Mitchell Horwich and Francine Horwich are continuing to maintain
law practices in Coral Gables, while Ronald lives and works in
Birmingham, Alabama. Mitchell and his wife Sherry and Francine and
her husband David Weinstein have given Richard and Sonya three
granddaughters and two great granddaughters.
“A Commitment is Something We Keep …
Long After the Time We Made the Original Commitment
Has Long Past … thus We Change our Own Lives and
the Lives of Others.”
To all of those past, present and future generations of St.
George, your commitment to this Great Cathedral will be
everlasting! It is in the power of belief of the few that makes
the dreams a reality for the many. My mother, my father and a
handful of people believed in you and this community. It was
not a fleeting thought or a maybe or a wish…but a true desire to
impact the lives of the many who came forth and believed with
them… believed that through the faith in that of a mustard seed
that all mountains will be conquered and believed that God and
His Son Jesus Christ will be your guiding light to eternal peace,
joy and love.
Blessings to this great community of people both far and near
and in memory of all of those before us and to those who will
succeed us; keep that belief, that faith, that passion, that trust …
and pay it forward to the many generations who will carry the
torch of St. George Cathedral into eternity.
On behalf of our family … Congratulations to Father Saba
and the Parishioners in this Golden Jubilee!
