PRINCIPAL COMMENTS: PAUL JORGENSEN
Our NAPLAN results have been delivered and each child in Years 3 and 5 should have received their individual NAPLAN results. It is important to remember that these results show how your child did on these particular tests on these particular days and are only one set of data that indicates your child’s progress and achievements. The tests were carried out in early May so there has been sometime between the tests and getting the results. If you have any concerns please contact your child’s classroom teacher and they will be able to show you up to date test results and a range of other data indicating your child’s progress.
The NAPLAN data the school receives gives us information on how we are going in relation to growth and achievement across the school. We use this data to track individual students and cohorts of students and to inform us of areas to improve on.
The data this year again shows a positive trend of improving results in most areas, but a small drop in some areas. This can sometimes be attributed to relevant
cohorts of children but this will be something that we will analyse in the coming weeks and put measures in place to address any concerns found.
After a short period of decline in our data we have made some good gains over the past four years and although our work is not done yet we are pleased that we have been able to put in place procedures that allow us to reflect on our school data and make adjustments where needed. We can attribute the improvement over the past few years to a number of factors but two of our key initiatives over this time has been on Challenging Learning through the focus on the work of James Nottingham and also the development of our Writing Checklists that students use regularly and set personal goals against. This was particularly evident in the great results in the Grammar and Punctuation tests in NAPLAN.
WOOLWOOOORRRRTTTTHS EAAAARRRRN & LEARN PROGRAAAAM has started for 2017. Hazelwood North Primary School is participating in Earn and Learn this year
and if we receive enough stickers we could earn for our school some amazing
equipment just by shopping at Woolworths from Wednesday 26th July until
Tuesday19th September.

• In Reading we will be focusing on the reading strategies of making predictions about a story and looking at the beginning and ending sounds in words.
• In Maths Miss Waite’s grade will be focusing on place value, reading and making numbers while Miss Stockdale’s grade will be looking at sharing into equal amounts. On Monday and Tuesday we will be completing a Maths CAT (common assessment task) on money and worded problems.
• In Writing we will be working on achieving writing goals and writing recounts and procedures. • In Inquiry we will be continuing to look at simple machines, focusing on levers and pulleys. All students in Miss Waite’s grade will have spelling words or
letters to practise for testing on Friday.
Next week on Friday we will be doing our Book week activities. We encourage the
students to dress up as a book character.
This week Josh and Jo from Federation University did a science experiment
involving water rockets. The students got to measure water and put this in a bottle.
With Josh’s assistance students were able to test their rockets. Here are a few
pictures from the incursion. We made predictions, tested our hypothesis and made
conclusion based on the results collected by Jo.
We will be having Library on Wednesday as we have our Book week
activities during our usual Library time. Please bring your Library books on Wednesday!
Please check that you have access to your
child’s seesaw account. If you have misplaced
the log in details please see your child’s classroom teacher.
Miss Waite and Miss Stockdale
2/3 Preview As you can see from our Seesaw uploads this week, we have been exploring
fractions. Next we will deepen our understanding of naming fractions by knowing
how many equal parts a whole object or collection of items has been divided into.
For example, a pizza is normally cut into 8 equal parts. Each part would be called
an eighth and could be written as 1/8. If you ate three pieces, you would have
eaten three eighths or 3/8. We will also be learning about rotating, sliding and
flipping 2-dimensional shapes. For some online activities involving these concepts,
you can visit http://splash.abc.net.au/home#!/media/1386463/shape-sorter-
modify-tool.
Next week in Writing we will be publishing the stories that we have
recently been planning and drafting. Before publishing our stories, we
will be revising and editing them using our Writing Checklists to
make sure that we are on track to reach the next level in our writing.
We will also be extending our writing by learning more about
compound sentences. A compound sentence has two simple sentences that are
connected using a conjunction. For example “Jane ran as fast as she could, but she
couldn’t escape the monster.” In this sentence, the word but is the conjunction that
joins the two simple sentences.
In Reading we will be learning the Café strategy “Use word parts
to determine the meaning of words” to extend our vocabulary.
Take for example the word “playing”. We know the meaning of
the word play and that when we add –ing to it, the word
becomes a verb. See how many words your child can write down
that have the word ending (suffix) –ing.
In Inquiry we will be exploring simple and complex machines. The focus of this will
be to investigate the way different machines work in the world around us. An
example of a simple machine is a shovel which is a type of lever. How many other
types of levers can you think of?
We all wish you a safe and warm weekend. See you next week!
Mark, Kelly and Natalie.

Maths
In Mathematics we will be reviewing topics covered this term: BODMAS (Brackets Order Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction) and place value. To assist with students concepts of place value please complete these activities, or some of, with your child.
• Write a variety of 3-6 digit numbers on separate pieces of paper and then order them from smallest to largest
• Draw some columns (including decimals to tens of thousandths) and give your child a variety of numbers to place correctly in the columns
• Write a large number and have your child circle different values as you call them out.
• Play a game of Wishball : http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/viewing/L495/index.html
• Write a variety of mixed sums and have your child use BODMAS to correctly solve them.
As a revision of clocks and time, log onto this interactive clockface and ask your child to show a variety of times. http://www.visnos.com/demos/clock
Language
Our focus in Writing will be how to write paragraphs. Students must read at least four times a week. Please monitor your child’s reading. If this is not happening, make a time to ensure your child reads. Most students have added their spelling words on SeeSaw please help your child learn their words. If your child has not uploaded their words, please message their teacher so this can be rectified.
Inquiry
In previous weeks, we have focussed on designing a complex machine. Students have drawn three possible designs and have chosen the most suitable. Next week students will continue to make a model of their design while analysing their creation and thinking of possible improvement

JOSHUA SALIBA SCIENCE INCURSIONJOSHUA SALIBA SCIENCE INCURSIONJOSHUA SALIBA SCIENCE INCURSION
On the 15th of August 2017, Joshua Saliba from Federation University came to our
school to teach us how a bottle rocket works, how to make it and the safety rules
about working with rockets. First, he gave us a talk about how different machines
work and how they help us.
Then, he gave us a slide show presentation about how a bottle rocket flies. Josh
then showed us how many millilitres of water goes in each bottle. The lowest
amount was 0ml and the highest was 1500ml. Everyone got into partners and each
pair poured a different amount of millilitres of water in each bottle.
Next Joshua told us to make a prediction about how high you thought your bottle
will go in metres. Josh had built a contraption that when air was pumped into the
bottle, and the trigger was pulled, it would fly up in the air like a SPACE ROCKET!
We would pump air in the bottle until it reached 30psi. Then we would pull the
trigger and all the air pressure forced the water out of the bottle and then…
BOOOOOOOOM, it would fire up in the air like a ballistic missile. We learnt about
predicting and estimating height.
Mr Saliba recorded the angle of each flight in a table. We will use this table in
maths creating a graph of our results. The highest flight, 27.7 metres, was achieved
by the bottle which had 400ml in it. We thought Mr Saliba’s session was fun and
interesting.
