We all reunite to celebrate life, a particular occasion or ourselves. But often these events are related to an excessive and massive use of alcohol and psychotropic substances. Music almost always develops a fundamental role with its overwhelming power, which acts like glue, but at the same time it tends to isolate the human being in the world of his own feelings. Small communities are created, tribes that each participate to a particular ritual. Nowadays alcohol consumption has reached dreadful levels and strikes in transversal ways all the generations and the social classes. The loss of the inhibiting brakes often corresponds to a greater and more exhilarating fun. At a ludic event you have fun, you dance. In some cases it is the maximum expression of joyfulness that man can manifest in a community context, understood as moment of aggregation and separation.

As for the assumption of drugs the phenomenon is certainly more limited, but not less visible. Drugs “help” to feel something that is almost impossible to be reached in a state of not altered

conscience and just with the body’s abilities. The altered state of mind can be associated to different needs.

From the more sordid need to reach the “buzz” just to have a good time, to deeper realities than tend to the attainment of a state of trance, that in certain occasions refers to different

shamanic and purification rituals. I don’t focus my attention on the type or quantity of the assumed substances, but on the purpose that they have. A party, as sober as it could be, represents a moment

of separation from the reality that surrounds us daily (maximum expression of this is for instance the carnival). Alcohol and drugs representthe means through which this breakup is sharper and deeper,

and perhaps most true. Probably in these occasions of aggregation we turn to the hunt of a world that is not that in which we live, not better or worse, but a different world.
