Hello all.
May is very important to our synagogue. Demolition and remodeling
of our Karp Chapel not only has begun, but is showing great strides
of progress. Come by
anytime to take a quick tour. We are working very hard to meet our
deadline to have our June 10 congregation meeting in our new Karp
Chapel.
In addition, we are actively moving towards making our May 6
Larry Lasky annual golf outing a social and financial success, as it
has been since inception. Larry and his legacy have meant so much
to us and I am glad to have started and continued the honor of re-
membering what he did for us.
We are making great progress on the June 3 gala. Tickets are selling
great and I ask you to support our dinner/dance by buying tickets.
Lastly, we have started a membership committee chaired by Elise
(could not have chosen a better person to meet its needs). I ask you
with a hopeful heart, to please call Elise 912-507-2980 if you know
of a prospective member, a member with an upcoming birthday,
wedding, anniversary, sickness, or family health disaster. Elise and
her great committee would love to reach out with happy greetings or
thoughtful reaction to a crisis in your life. My two years as president
has always had the focus on YOU wherever YOU may need us.
My best wishes,
Your President
Victor

(Re-)Finding Our Spiritual Place
As a child growing up, I always knew where to find my father when we came to synagogue: fourth row from
the back, left hand side on the middle aisle (on High Holidays, it was seventh row from the front, all the way
on the right; he still sits in those same seats to this day). It was seemingly inconceivable that he would sit
anywhere else during services. That is his “spot.”
Many of us are in a similar situation; we have a spot where we like to sit for services. Sometimes, if we get
there and someone is already sitting there, we’ll be willing to find a different seat, but we’ll return to our old
spot the next time it is available. There is something comforting about the routine and ritual of our seat.
There’s even a term for it in Hebrew: makom kavua, “a fixed place,” a place that you have set aside as your
own.
For us regular service attendees, that routine has been disrupted by the renovations going on in the Karp
Chapel. We have moved for now into the Tenenbaum Sanctuary for all of our services, both weekday and
Shabbat, where we have worked to create an intimate prayer space in such a large area. The feedback has
been largely positive as we have hardly missed a beat.
At the same time, there has been some adjustment period in the new space as each of us try to find our new
makom kavua. We have had to get used to a new seat, a new room, new acoustics, and a new ritual layout.
And once we return to the newly redone Karp Chapel again, there will be another adjustment process. It is a
natural occurrence in any new area. When we move to a new house, buy a new car, or even buy new furni-
ture, it takes some time to get used to it. It is part of the larger process of adjusting to our surroundings.
As difficult as it can be to be forced to move out of the comfort zone of our routines and rituals, Jewish
tradition offers some consolation. There is an idea in rabbinic thought which states, Shinui makom, shinui
mazal, “when you change your place, you change your fortune.” Getting out of your makom kavua, your
usual spot, allows you to gain new perspectives and new ideas. It forces you to see things differently. I
know for me, as a rabbi, it’s forced me to think about things like acoustics, room layout, volume and
projection which I took for granted in our old chapel. And I look forward to looking at them again in a new
light when we move into the new chapel.
It can be difficult to move out of our usual rituals and comfort zones. Hopefully this experience of moving
into a new place has helped you as it has helped me evaluate and appreciate where we are. If you haven’t
been by recently, I hope you’ll join us soon to see all the things going on around our community. And when
we find our new makom kavua in a couple weeks, we will all have a renewed perspective on our place.
Rabbi Steven Henkin

DONOR DUES PROGRAM
MAY 2018 IYAR-SIVAN 5778 Page 6
How do I Send a Mitzvah-Gram? Here are 4 simple steps to do this:
1 Print out the Mitzvah-Gram page from the MAY HaYom newsletter with the list of people celebrating a birthday or
anniversary in JUNE.
2 Circle the names of all those people to whom you would like to send a Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary greeting.
3 Mail or deliver your list, along with your check made out to Agudath Achim Sisterhood for $.50 for each circled name, to
Barbara Abrams, 24 Raindrop Lane, Bluffton, S.C. 29909, or leave your list and check in the synagogue office.
4 Make sure to include your name(s) the way you want it (them) listed.
In order for your birthday and anniversary greetings to be delivered in a timely manner, everyone needs to turn in June Mitzvah-Gram
sheet by the 15th of May.
If you have any questions about this project, please contact me at [email protected], or at (843)705-3723 or (843) 290-3995.
Thanks to everyone for participating in this exciting program.
