Rabbi Alfi’s Sabbatical, Vacation, and Other

Scheduled Time Away from the Temple

this Summer

Rabbi Alfi is scheduled to be out of the office from June 13 through Au-gust 3. This includes her annual install-ment of her sabbatical, as well as two weeks at Camp Newman. She will not be responding to any calls or emails from June 13 through July 19. When Rabbi Alfi is working at Camp Newman, she will have very limited phone and internet access.

This is a time for well-deserved and needed rest and renewal. On be-half of the Board of Trustees, I ask that we respect her time away from her usual duties by not calling, emailing, or texting her. Cantor Steinberg will be available to cover all clergy responsi-bilities.

If there is an emergency, please contact the CBI office during office hours at 916-446-4861, or Cantor Steinberg, after hours, at 916-849-6023. If necessary, staff will contact Rabbi Alfi for you. Thank you for your consideration.

Alan M. Steinberg,

Board President

Worship (Continued) President’s Message

Continued on next page.

President’s Message

Shalom! As we conclude the 2015/16 fiscal year, and with a year as Presi-dent under my Tallis, there is much to say and still more to do heading into the 2016/17 fiscal year. First, a big thank you and best wishes to Mandy

Greene. Mandy retires at the end of June after 13 years of dedicated service. Sadly for us, he and Marcia will be leaving Sacra-mento to enjoy their retirement years with their grandchildren in Massachusetts. The Greenes have been a fixture in the Sacramento Jewish community and they will be dearly missed.

For those that missed the Annual Meeting on May 28, I would like to reiterate how privileged I am to work with such a dedicated group of clergy, staff, lay leaders, volunteers, and congregants. I want to acknowledge and thank outgoing Board of Trustees members Alisa Sakowitz, Daniel Kaufman, and Gary Leiserowitz. They have devoted a tremendous amount of time and effort contributing to the governance and support of our Congre-gation. I am sure they will continue to find ways to stay involved, but they will be missed at board meetings. At the same time, we are fortunate to welcome new members to the board: Jody Prunier, Illene Carroll, Bendan Blue, Diego Horenstein, David Lang, and Davita Levin-Robinson.

And it is with great pleasure that I announce the retention of our Education Administrator, Denise Crevin, with a 3-year contract extension. She has proven to be a tremendous asset to our Congregation, and we are very excited by the continued growth and expansion of our religious education programming. Thank you, Denise.

On the financial front, we are poised to end the 2015/16 fiscal year in the black with a small surplus. The Board of Trustees passed the 2016/17 budget that, based on

Alan M. Steinberg President

very conservative revenue projections, forecasts a budget deficit of several thou-sand dollars. We will make every effort to fill that gap during the year, but do not feel that the small deficit is a cause for concern in the overall context of an ap-proximately $1.1 million annual budget. The Board of Trustees is dedicated to good governance, financial stewardship, and espousing Jewish ideals in our service to this great Congregation.

Finances aside, the real strength of our community comes from your participation and prayer. Congregation B’nai Israel is a dynamic and inclusive community, and we continue to see growth in our member-ship and programming, outreach, and community support. In the past year alone, we have looked inward in our dia-logue on Israel, looked outward to assist refugee families in the Sacramento area, looked intently and critically at social and racial injustice and inequities in our socie-ty, and looked with a progressive and plu-ralistic eye on the Wailing Wall where the Women of the Wall will pray with Rudy’s Torah! And all the while sharing the holi-days and life cycle events together as a community. I look forward to the year to come.

President’s Message (Continued) The Brotherhood

Transition Time

A bit hard for me to believe that the time has come, but this is my twelfth and final column as Brotherhood presi-dent. I have enjoyed the honor and opportunity of leading the Brotherhood during the past two years. With my term coming to an end, I look forward to turning over that same honor and opportunity to the next president, while I catch up on some long overdue home maintenance. These past two years have been personally fulfilling, sometimes challenging, but ultimately gratifying and satis-fying. Yes, it was a lot of work at times, but even on those

inevitable frustrating days where things didn’t go quite as expected (to say the least), I’ve always found the time and effort to be well worth it and rewarding. So perhaps this is also my roundabout way to encourage those men who may be hesitant about actively participating in Brotherhood to just go ahead, step up, and jump in, to mix a metaphor or two. I would be greatly surprised if you didn’t also find it genuinely rewarding and a won-derful way to build friendships and work with a terrific group of men.

There are so many people to thank for their support. First, thanks to eve-ry Brotherhood member – and there were many – who was involved in Brotherhood events. To the leaders of our congregation, Rabbi Alfi and our past and current presidents of the Board of Trustees, Barbara Allen-Brecher and Alan Steinberg – thank you for your confidence in me and your sup-port. To WBI’s Peggy Goldstein and Sandy Lee, who were absolutely won-derful to work with on our collaborative events. A special acknowledge-ment of thanks to our two past presidents, Paul Ortega and Jeff Rabinovitz, for their sage advice and perspective. Also, my deepest thanks to Gary Sib-ner, our V.P. of Programming, who stepped up and took on an additional role of co-leading our catering activities after Dave Lewis retired. Finally, a very special thank you that goes beyond mere words to my wife, Robin, for her support, patience, and wise counsel.

On June 26, we will be holding our annual Brotherhood meeting. I would like to strongly encourage every Brotherhood member and prospective member to attend – not only for the good food and drinks of the adult vari-ety, but also for the fellowship. This meeting really serves two purposes. First, to update members on upcoming programs and activities and present the new budget. Second and more important: to gather ideas and feedback on the programs and activities that you would like to see and that will help keep Brotherhood a relevant, vital, and engaging organization. Hope to see you there.

Again, thank you – it has been a privilege to be your president.

Shalom, Jon

Women of B’nai Israel Farewell and Thank You

It is hard to believe it has been two years since I became the President of the Women of B’nai Israel. The time has flown by in a whirl of meetings, events, planning, discussion, and (most of all) e-mails! I want to use my last column to say what an incredible experience it has been to lead this group of wom-en. I have seen loving kindness, sacrifice, and extreme goodwill at every turn. Over the last two years many women have taken active responsibility or volunteered their time. Many others have given sup-port with their participation and donations. My Jewish journey has been forever enriched through my leadership role in WBI and participation with the national and area organizations of Women of Reform Judaism.

The new Board will be installed on June 5. With Sandy Lee as the new President, WBI will continue to grow, flourish, and explore ways to meet the needs of women (and men) in partnership with the leadership of Congre-gation B’nai Israel. In the past two years, we have set in place mechanisms to help that growth: policies and procedures, job descriptions, a new logo, an annual report, bringing our finances into the computer age, and many innovative and successful events. Those include the Chai Tea, the Happy Hour Havdalah, the Spring Mah Jongg Tournament, and the fall Fashion Show. We have continued to emphasize social action with sponsorships of the Anat Hoffman visit to Sacra-mento, St. John’s and Loaves and Fishes shelters, and the Central Downtown Food Basket. We joined with other groups to sponsor the movie screening of The Mask You Live In, which addresses issues of diversity and gender identity. Our annual membership luncheon featured a dynamic/interactive presentation about a woman’s right to choose. We con-tinue to support CBI youth through awards to assist young people to attend Jewish summer camp, as well as donations to the Confirma-tion Class and other youth groups. We have forged closer working relationships with the Brotherhood and now support each other for our special Shabbat services and onegs.

There is always more that can be done, and I have every expectation that Sandy and her fine Board will take the Women of B’nai Israel into the next two years with a powerful spirit and a love of our mission as Jewish women. Please stay involved, or get involved, and make your mark by being a member of this tremendous organization

Announcing the 2016-18 Women of B’nai Israel Board of Directors Executive Officers.

Religious School Education

Focus on Shavuot

Shavuot is a holiday we don’t discuss much during Religious School, since it usu-ally takes place after classes conclude for the year, so I thought it would be fun to give you some background and ideas for celebrating this year. Shavuot is the Hebrew word for “weeks” and refers to the Jewish festival marking the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. It began as an agricultural festival that marked the end of the spring barley har-

vest and the beginning of the summer wheat harvest. In ancient times, it was a pilgrimage festival during which Isra-elites brought crop offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem. Today, it is a celebration of Torah, education, and actively choosing to participate in Jewish life. It is customary to decorate one’s home with greens and fresh flowers on Shavuot as a reminder of the spring har-vest and the ancient ritual of bringing the first fruits to the Temple. Many Jews prepare and eat dairy foods—often cheesecake or blintzes—on Shavuot as a reminder of the sweetness of Torah. Many people stay up all night studying Torah. And it has become traditional on Shavuot to hold the Confirmation ceremony for high school students who have continued their studies and Jewish involvement be-yond b’nai mitzvah. Just as the Jewish people accepted the Torah on Shavuot, confirmands reaffirm their commitment to the covenant and adult Jewish life.

We have several opportunities for you to observe and celebrate this year, beginning with Shavuot in the Park for families from 3:00-4:30 pm on June 11. Come enjoy music, art, and ice cream in Land Park, across the street from CBI. Later that night, adults are encouraged to attend Tikkun Leil Shavuot from 7:00-10:00 pm and learn about the Book of Ruth with Rabbi Alfi and Cantor Steinberg while enjoying culi-nary treats prepared by Jason Lindo and Caryn Mizzi. Then join us at 7:00 pm on June 12 for Shavuot Services, where our 2016 Confirmation Class will be honored. (Prepare to be amazed by this year’s Confirmation Class.)

And while celebrating active participation in Jewish life, consider signing your children up for Camp Shelanu, CBI’s day camp. With five sessions running from June 27 through July 29 and options for those entering kindergarten through 10th grade, it’s a great opportunity for kids to spend time with friends, learn about Israel, play sports and other games, go on enriching field trips, cook, create, discover, and enjoy being Jewish! Visit http://www.bnais.com/index.php/education/camp-shelanu for details and to register! We look forward to seeing you around campus this summer!

BISY News By BISY Communications Vice President Jonah Wiener-Brodkey

Greetings from BISY for the last time this school year! Yes, it's true - BISY's 2015-16 year has come to a close. We’ve spent the last couple of months attending some great events, starting on April 3 when we watched The Hunting Ground, a film about assault on college campuses, followed by a panel discussion. The film opened up a meaningful discussion and we learned a lot. On May 6 we held our Senior Goodbye Shul-In, where we played an awesome game of real-life Clue, wel-comed our incoming 9th grade members, and said farewell to our graduating seniors. We also elected our new BISY board for the 2016-17 year. These eleven teen leaders are definitely looking forward to planning fun and impactful programs for BISY during the upcoming year!

Over the weekend of May 13, BISYites attend-ed Gesher Kallah, a regional NFTY event at Camp Newman with over 200 Jewish teens. Summer is a slower time for BISY, but before you head off to camp, vacation, jobs, and more, please join us for Shabbat services on June 10, when BISY's new board will be installed. 8th graders are highly encouraged to come to meet the BISY board be-fore getting involved in BISY next year. On that note, feel free to give BISY a shout-out to any 8th

graders you know so they can get in on the fun next year!

On behalf of BISY, thanks, and have a great summer!

BISY elected their board for the 2016-2017 year, beginning with their installation on June 10 during services. They are:

Lexi Nicodemus – President

Ben Schwartz – Programming Vice President

Leeza Wong – Social Action Vice President

Jonah Wiener-Brodkey – Religious & Cultural Vice President

Rachel Chancellor - Membership Vice President

Dani Wiesenthal – Communications Vice President

Maddy Halseth - Fundraising and Merchandise Vice President

Rachael Grand – Senior Representative

OPEN – Junior Representative

Lucy Beckett – Sophomore Representative

Justin Williams – Freshman Representative

Your work is greatly appreciated!

We’re now starting to plan our programs for 2016-17. More information will be available in the August/September issue of the Koleinu and via the weekly Education Chadashot (which will be on hiatus over the summer but will start up again in the fall).

Only recently has he begun speaking about the Holocaust. Within the last few years he has spoken to many institutions such as schools, churches, and synagogues, and has written a memoir called We Survived …At Last I Speak.

After his presentation, Mr. Malmed will be happy to answer questions and sign copies of his book. The book costs $20, and proceeds will go to an organization that aids Holocaust survivors.

Social Action

CBI’s Focus on Racial Justice

Created in fall 2015, and joining with the URJ Commitment to Racial Justice as well as partnering with Reform California, our CBI Racial Justice Committee was formed to strengthen B’nai Israel’s efforts in furthering our Jewish commitment to equality and jus-tice for all of God’s children. Through the 3 stages of “Reflect, Relate, and Reform,” we will embark on a campaign to become allies in the work to dismantle structural racism. (URJ) If you are interested in being on the committee, contact Sharon Rogoff: [email protected]. Sustainable Living Committee Updates and Information

New committee members and project ideas are always welcome! If you would like to get involved with the CBI SLC, please contact Chuck Rosenberg

([email protected]) or Todd Mendell ([email protected]).

American River Parkway Stewardship – Upcoming Parkway Cleanup Dates:

▪ Friday, June 24 – 10:00am ▪ Sunday, July 10 – 10:00 am

If you would like to volunteer or be added to the email contact list for future cleanups, please contact Todd Men-dell ([email protected] or 916-684-6734).

Family Promise Helen Nussbaum has joined Ann Soloway and Sandy

Kaufman in coordinating services for Family Promise this year. We would love to have another member or two join our little committee. FP will be at B'nai Israel starting No-vember 6, 2016, for 2 weeks ending on November 20. We have spoken to the B'nai Mitzvah students and hope to have a couple of students make Family Promise their Mitzvah project. We are looking forward to hosting again this year and enlisting many of our congregants to make it successful!

One of the families that was here this year is now settled in their own apartment. Another family has a new addition to her family. If anyone would like to make a contribution for a gift card, please send a check to Sandy Kaufman. They, too, are getting permanently settled.

Thanks to all who join in this wonderful project each year. Sandy Kaufman, [email protected]

CBI’s GAN ORGANIC – What’s new in the garden? by Sue Rosenberg

Religious School students, Madrichim, and volunteers have been very active in the garden this spring. Participants in the garden chug ac-complished a great deal during their

six week session. The enthusiastic group of 4th through 7th graders weeded, planted seeds, planted transplants, thinned seedlings, and harvested plants, flowers, and veg-etables for CBI and the food closet. They also learned about the garden's drip irrigation system, and the 3rd grade class installed pavers they made!

CBI Refugee Assistance Program By Maryann Rabovsky - Coordinator

Because our world is facing a refugee crisis, CBI organized its volunteer team earlier this year to help with the re-settlement process by working with the local organization “Opening Doors.” However, God works in mysterious ways, and a refugee family came to us a couple of months ago. A young couple, Zlata and Ayhan Durak, arrived in Sacra-mento from Turkey as refugees seeking political asylum and came to B’nai Israel

looking to be part of the Jewish community. While they wait six months for their immigration paper-

work to be reviewed, CBI has opened its food closet to them, as has the Federation, and has been providing gro-cery cards and helping with their rent and utility expenses. Also, on May 1, Opening Doors offered a bike repair class at the Bike Kitchen for tuning up and donating to our refu-gees. Some of the refugee clients were there to tune up their own bikes, and our CBI volunteer team transported them to and from their homes.

Contact Maryann Rabovsky to see how you can help: [email protected].

Sunday, June 26, from 2:00-5:00 pm

There will be Israeli dancing on June 26 in the Social Hall at Congregation B’nai Israel led by Jim Lawson.

Instruction for beginners will be from 2:00-3:00, followed by oldies, requests, and inter-mediate dances. Please wear tennis or soft-soled shoes. Enjoy a fun afternoon of dancing! Donation $5.00. For more information contact Jeanette: (916)799-7213.

Meet Dana Hirschel By Carol Moon Goldberg

I joined B’nai Israel about 20 years ago. I grew up on the Bay Area Peninsula in a Conservative congregation. I came to Sacramento from the Bay Area in 1981 to attend college and attended High Holiday services at another synagogue, but didn't feel comfortable there. I met Eileen Jacobowitz through work and she told me about CBI. I don’t remember when I first attended but I knew I immediately felt at home and comfortable. I joined soon thereafter. It took awhile to become involved, but once I did, I became very busy. In the past 10 years or so I have been the Treasurer and President of the Women of B’nai Israel and now sit on the tem-ple board. I became a Bat Mitzvah three years ago. I like to volunteer at the social events such as the Seder and the Wine and Food Festival, particularly as a wine pourer. What I like most about CBI is the sense of community, our own and that around us. Everything we do is to make our community and world better. That inspires me. Additionally, it is a commu-nity that surrounds us when we need it, and even when we don’t know that we need it, like a

warm, giant hug. I want to ensure that future generations have a community to embrace and inspire them, to make them feel warm and comforted, and for them to continue Tikkun Olam.

The L’Dor V’Dor Legacy Circle is made up of forward-thinking people who have made provisions for a gift to our congregation in their estate plans. Methods and amounts vary but each adds to the foundation on which our congregation rests. These donors are providing for future generations just as those who came before have done for us. In this Koleinu, and in future editions, Legacy Circle members will be profiled to thank them for their generosity and illustrate the variety of donors who wish to provide a legacy to Congregation B’nai Israel. Please join the L’Dor V’Dor Legacy Circle.

Summer Shopping at our Judaica Gift Shop

Although Religious School is on hiatus for the summer, the Jonas Goldman Judaica Gift Shop volunteers are still available to meet your needs. During the summer, the shop will be open the following Tuesdays from 2 to 5 pm: June 7 and 21, July 12 and 26, and August 9 and 23. We’d love to assist you in choosing special gifts for bar/bat mitzvahs, weddings, and holidays.

We have beautiful ritual items, including mezuzzot by Adi Sidler, Seeka, and Gary Rosenthal; necklaces and ear-rings by Ayala Bar, Orly, Adaya, Yoolie, and other Israeli artists; and tallit and kippot from Israel. Before schlepping all the way to the Bay Area, visit the Jonas Goldman Judaica Gift Shop. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by our selection of gifts and ritual items.

If you have questions or can’t visit during our regularly scheduled hours, call Jane Orkand, 365-5579, or Carole Kovnick, 974-0875, for an appointment.

Stars and S’mores Intergenerational Retreat II: March 31 – April 2, 2017

Based on the huge success of our first Stars and S’mores retreat in 2015, we have booked a date for an-other amazing intergenerational CBI retreat, March 31 – April 2, 2017! We will all gather together at URJ’s beauti-ful Camp Newman near Santa Rosa—an easy 90-minute drive from Sacramento. The camp is ours for the week-end! Save the date, you won’t want to miss it!

The retreat will be a super weekend for all age groups and will be filled with food, music, dancing, meditation, arts & crafts, sports, and an awesome Shabbat service under the stars. The weekend will have something for everyone!

We will be forming a committee in the fall to plan for the event, so if you are interested, please contact Ted London at 916-284-7277 or [email protected].

Leisure League welcomes all congregants and their Jewish friends 55 and better, affiliated or not, at any of the events. Each luncheon, $5 payable at the door. For more info or to RSVP: 486-0906 or email [email protected].
