Happy Sunday, Ono readers!Wasting no time this week, let’sget right to the point. I love mush-
rooms and always have, so I figure, whynot have some fun with fungi?! Known asthe “meat” of the vegetable world, fungiare extensively used in international cui-sine, and hold a special place in the heartsof carnivores and vegetarians alike.Whether it be shiitake, enoki, portobello orbutton, these ’shrooms have no boundaries.
Keeping on point with my healthydietary attempts, I just had to partake inthis onolicious culinary delight. Studiesshow that mushrooms are an excellentsource of niacin, low in calories, fat andsodium, are cholesterol free and containessential antioxidants to support a strong
immune system. So, withthat, say goodbye to thatlingering winter bug!
And if you’re not nec-essarily a fan of fungi, you might change yourmind once indulging inthe variety of mushroommasterpieces offered atthe following Ono, YouKnow locations. No
matter what your taste, there’s bound tobe something that will have you madabout mushrooms!
Kit n KitchenKit n Kitchen owners (and husband-
and-wife team) Kit and May Yiu haveperfected the art of blending Europeanfare with Asian cuisine — both of whichare very well-respected in the culinaryworld. And upon my most recent visit tothis University Avenue eatery, abundantwith vibrant hues and eclectic décor, Iwas thrilled to set my eyes and appetiteon two of Kit’s highly requested dishesthat equate to a scrumptious mushroomof a meal. For starters, engage yourappetite with Bowl of Button ($4.95), atempting appetizer featuring garden fresh
button mushrooms sauteed with garlic, olive oil, butter and wine, with a hint ofsalt and pepper.
“Bowl of Button is perfect for sharing,”says Kit. “It's a light appetizer thatpairs extremely well with a glass ofwhite wine.”
Button mushrooms are bite-sized, sotrust me when I say you won’t be ableto stop at just one. But, you must, because if you’re a lover of ’shrooms, you’ll also have to sample Kit’s wonderfulMixed Mushroom Risotto ($13.95). Thisculinary delight presents diners with acreamy white sauce risotto topped witha medley of garden-fresh button, babyenoki and shiitake mushrooms to tickleyour taste buds.
“Shiitake mushrooms give off a lot offlavor, while enoki mushrooms seem tobe more crunchy and, of course, buttonmushrooms are your classic ’shroom,”Kit explains. “Mixed Mushroom Risottohas a bit of everything mushroom!” So,go at it, dig right in!
Recently, Kit n Kitchen also introducedan Owl Menu to its repertoire, encouraginglate-night dining from 9 to midnightnightly. This new menu highlights manyof the traditional menu’s offerings inaddition to a collection of brand new
dishes for your dining pleasure.

Located across from KaimukiHigh School, Sekiya’s has been astaple in the East Oahu communi-ty for more than 75 years, andowner Joy Morihara attributesquality food and loyal customersas the secret to its longevity.
“Sekiya’s opened in 1935, andthis is our third location, to beexact. We started out on SchoolStreet as a tiny okazuya, then werelocated to Kapahulu, and even-tually to Kaimuki in 1955, andwe’re still here today,” she sayswith a laugh. “We offer the samelocal food that we’ve been offer-ing for generations. Our cus-tomers have been eating heresince they were kids, and we’vegenerated quite a following. We’re very appreciative of theircontinuous support.”
Sekiya’s was founded byMorihara’s grandparents Taisukeand Katsuko Sekiya, and today,Morihara, along with her auntDoris Hara, spearhead this family-owned business, which comfort-ably seats 88 diners respectfullyand has 40 employees on staff.
“All of our employees have beenworking here for ages, and eventhough we’re not related it feelslike one big family,” Moriharasays. “We have several chefs aswell, all of whom have beenemployed here for a long time.”
Well, Sekiya’s must be doingsomething right. According toMorihara, the menu hasn’tchanged much since the begin-ning, with the exception of a fewadd-ons here and there. Sekiya’sclassics include full-course meals
of the ever-popular MarinatedFried Chicken ($12.95), OxtailSoup ($13.95), Beef Sukiyaki($14.95) and Beef Teriyaki($11.95), to name a few, all servedwith miso soup, rice, tsukemonoand hot tea.
“Marinated Fried Chicken willalways be a mainstay on ourmenu and features tender chick-en thigh soaked to perfection ina light Teriyaki sauce, flouredand deep-fried. It also comeswith a daikon sauce that’s verytasty,” she explains. “BeefSukiyaki also is very deliciouswith shiitake mushroom, tofu, round onion, makina, greenonion, gobo and itokonyaku.”
But what always keeps cus-tomers coming back time and timeagain is Sekiya’s signature saimin.
The quaint neighborhood ofKaimuki is known for its red dirt, vast number of hills and small-towncharm. Take a stroll through theneighborhood with any old-timeresident and you’ll soon notice thatKaimuki hasn’t changed much overthe years. In fact, you’ll continue tofind many small businesses thathave been serving the communityfor generations, including Sekiya’sRestaurant & Delicatessen, theplace to go for all of your localJapanese favorites.

Beef Sukiyaki ($14.95)

The soup base is made from scratchwith dried shrimp base, konbu andchicken — so don’t be surprised ifyou slurp up every last drop.Sekiya’s accommodates all appetiteswith small ($4.95), large ($6.95) andextra large ($8.95) portions tochoose from. Morihara says mostpeople prefer to keep it simple, top-ping off their saimin with only charsiu and green onions. Bean sproutscan be added for 70 cents and veg-etables cost $1.20 more. And regu-lars to the eatery know that a bowl ofsaimin isn’t complete without a BBQStick ($1.95) on the side. Sekiya’ssaimin repertoire also includes FriedSaimin ($7.15), Karai Saimin($7.95) and Crispy Saimin ($2.25).
“Our saimin is prepared the old-fashioned way,” Morihara states.
“It’s local, home-cooked
saimin, and that’s hard to come bythese days.
“Most of the items on our menu arederived from family recipes whichhave been developed over the years, and they haven’t changed — the tasteand quality remain consistent.”
Sekiya’s is open daily, from 8 a.m.to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridaysand Saturdays. Patrons also can takeadvantage of the okazuya from 8a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day.
“If you’re on the go, you canalways pick up something from theokazuya. We offer everything fromInari sushi, nori maki, musubi, friednoodles, chow fun noodles, barbecuemeat, butterfish, shoyu hot dogs, tempura and more,” Morihara says.“Prices range from 55 cents to $3,and things sell out relativelyquickly because there’s somethingfor everyone.”
You could say the food speaks foritself at Sekiya’s. The atmosphere iscomfortable, casual and unpreten-tious, in which diners can simplyseat themselves. Yet, take note of theoutdoor fishpond at the rear of therestaurant, because there’s more to itthan meets the eye.
“My grandfather always had a fish-pond wherever he lived, so it wasonly fitting to also have one at therestaurant,” Morihara explains. “Thekids who come by love to feed thekoi in the pond, and the fishpond isbelieved to bring about good luck andgood fortune.”
Take it as you will, but perhaps thefishpond has played a role inSekiya’s continued success.
However, Morihara says, moreimportantly, business sustainabilityhas to do with the quality of the food.
“We serve home-cooked food, there’s nothing instant about it, andpeople like the taste of it too. It’sgood local-style food which every-one enjoys.”
And we couldn’t agree more. There’s just something so comfortingabout a good old-fashioned hamburg-er served with a hearty bowl ofsaimin — a local take on theAmericanized soup and sandwichcombo. Add a side order of HashTempura ($5.70, six pieces; 95 centsfor each additional piece) to that, andit’s a match made in heaven. Finally, why not end your meal on a sweetnote with Sekiya’s Orange Freeze($4.95) or Hot Fudge Sundae ($5.95).
“I’ve seen generations of peoplegrow up here. Some went to schoolat Kaimuki High School, and somecustomers will come as far asMililani or North Shore to eat here. Our customer base is pretty amaz-ing,” Morihara says with a smile.“We have some people who eat hereevery day; it’s very nice for us. Andevery so often we will get new cus-tomers drifting in, and they seem tolike it, too.”
At a place where continuity is key,Morihara has high hopes for thefuture of Sekiya’s.
“I hope that we can keep on cook-ing for many more years to come, andkeep on serving our customers as wellas their children and grandchildren.”
Simple comfort food is what it’sall about.

Pupus with a view at Tropics Bar & Grill
If the idea of pupus on the beach is notenough to entice a trip into Waikiki, theappetizer menu at Tropics Bar & Grill at
Hilton Hawaiian Village just may do it.Poke, shrimp, nachos, whatever, just tastebetter when the view includes the glitteringocean, smooth trade winds, bikini and surfshort-clad beachgoers, and, at least for thisweek, a never-ending array of “is that who Ithink it is?” Pro Bowl invitees and alumni.
Coconut Crusted Shrimp ($15) is a per-fect accompaniment to the visual and audi-ble pleasures of Waikiki. Big, crispy, sweetand juicy, with a side of lemon and a slight-ly spicy mango cocktail sauce — it’s notjust great finger food but great food period.
Ahi Tuna Poke ($14) is another seasidefavorite. Made with sashimi-grade ahi that isbrought in fresh each morning, the creamyfish is mixed with shoyu,Maui onion, hijiki, toastedsesame seeds, chili flakes andgarnished with watercress toadd a nice visual effect, and to
signal to others that the Island favorite hasarrived. Not enough fish? Check outFurikake & Beer-Battered Fish & Chips($17).
The fish is light, the batter crispy and theseasoned fries, are, well, crazy good.
Tropics Nachos ($15) made with freshtortilla chips, sour cream, salsa, gua-camole, jalapenos, Cheddar cheese andkalua pork is a popular choice, and slow-eating enough to provideample viewing time.
Waikiki is toooften a missedtreasure for manylocal diners, andthat’s too bad.The views fromTropic’s lanai
are just superb and Brick Oven Pizzasdelicious. Nice segue, huh?
Tropics offers five thin-crust and tastychoices, including Hawaiian, Margherita,Italian Sausage and Pepperoni, and Baconand Bleu Cheese. However, if I were to pickjust one, it would be Fire Grilled Chicken &Mushroom ($16). This pizza features grilledchicken, Hamakua mushrooms, Big Island-made goat cheese and a basil pesto, and it
was almost enough to make me forgetthe coworkers I was dining with.
Who am I kidding? I dismissedthem the minute the first appe-tizer crossed the table. Iended up walking home. Butit was worth it.

The revitalization ofWaikiki hasbrought new life to
the bustling city by thesea. It’s been a boon forlocal businesses, andriding that wave isAtlantis Seafood andSteak, a charmingaquatic-themed restau-rant centrally located inthe former Waikiki 3Theatre spot.
“There’s lots of peo-ple in Waikiki lately,”notes executive generalmanager SteveMatsuno. “We’ve beenthe lucky beneficiary ofthat. And it’s Pro Bowlweek, so we have a lotof customers.”
Of course, it takesmore than luck, football andan influx of potential cus-tomers for an eatery toremain busy. Sure, it maylure them in, but the foodhas to be good enough to getthem hooked.
Fans of Atlantis Seafoodand Steak are confident thatthe food will consistentlymeet their expectations, andthe surf and turf theme ishighly popular. But whilethat may excite hungry carni-vores, what’s the attractionfor vegetarians?
If surf and turf brings tomind nori and vegetables
rather than lobster and aNew York cut, then VeggiePasta ($19.95) will morethan tide you over. It’s aheaping plateful of spaghettitossed in a homemade mari-nara sauce and topped with a
generous amount ofbroccoli and cauli-flower florets, chopped string beans, asparagus and zucchi-ni, and garnished withchopped fresh toma-toes and green onions.Pretty as a picture, thecolorful dish’s crisp-tender vegetables andslightly sweet saucegive it an Asian-fusion accent.
Oh, and don’t for-get that Valentine’sDay is rapidlyapproaching. So ifyour significant otheris a surf-and-turflover, let ’em eatsteak. You’ll be happi-ly reeling in pasta
right in the heart of Waikiki.

Omelettes and pancakes, burgers andfries, milkshakes and sandwiches —these seemingly have been the stan-
dards of the “old-school” American diner, those traditional 24-hour hangouts wherethe aroma of coffee hits your nose uponentering the eatery.
At Wailana Coffee House, which openedin 1969 in the former home of KapiolaniDrive Inn, all your favorites are on the menuas well as a few ethnically customary items, which separates Wailana from the rest.Exclusively on Thursdays, Wailana servesits Oxtail Soup with homestyle care thatbrings comfort to the senses. Priced at$10.50, the soup goes through hours ofpreparation and meticulous phases before itis ladled into each bowl.
“First we use a whole oxtail, we trim thefat and then brown it with salt and pepper, getting rid of all the excess oil. The next daywe boil it for about four hours adding reddates, five star seasonings, peanuts, salt, ginger, chicken base and shiitake mush-rooms — that then becomes the stock whichhelps the meat cook and taste good,” saysowner Kenton Tom, who has been servingoxtail soup at Wailana Coffee House formore than 20 years. A variety of Chinese
vegetables top off the soup before itis served.
Guests of Wailana go out oftheir way on Thursdays to
get a bowl full of thisscrumptious soup.
“This is one of thebest on the island, andthis is according tosome people who knowtheir oxtail soup,” says
longtime customerNorbert Enos with a
laugh, who wishes hecould come by every

hen Seiju and AyakoIfuku opened Rainbow
Drive-In just off KapahuluAvenue in 1961, their goal was tooffer up food geared toward the work-ing class and beach crowd.
The couples’ philosophy was toserve plate lunches featuring ampleportions of simple but delicious foodaccompanied by two scoops of riceand a scoop of macaroni salad — andall at reasonable prices. More than 50years later, the tradition continues askamaaina and visitors flock fromaround the island and the world to eatat Rainbow Drive-In.
Fittingly, Rainbow’s Kapahululocation serves as a link between cus-tomers of multiple backgrounds. On arecent visit, the line at the eatery’sorder window included tourists fromJapan and Canada, visitors from theMainland, a few construction workerstaking a break from the swelteringheat, and former University of Hawaiiturned Oakland Raiders football play-er Samson Satele, who was in townfor Pro Bowl festivities. As RainbowDrive-In vice president JimGusukuma puts it, “we have a greatmix of customers, from constructionworkers to office workers, and look atthe amount of tourists we have here. It’s a great mix, and it kind of repre-sents all the colors of the rainbow, andthat’s what we’re all about. We’re soproud that we can appeal to a greatcross-section of customers.”
Little has changed in the 50-plusyears since Rainbow Drive-In beganpumping out popular plates. After all,why mess with recipes that have beenshared with multiple generations ofdiners? The only noticeable alterationto the iconic eatery can be found at itsmenu display, where digital screenshave replaced the old static and hand-
written menu boards. But don’t worry, the menu items and recipes haven’tchanged a bit, Gusukuma insists.
“We just completed our 50thanniversary celebration in October,2011, and going forward, we intend tobe around for the next 50 years sowe’ve modernized a little bit,” saysGusukuma, the son-in-law of theestablishment’s owners. “If you comedown to Rainbow Drive-In, you’llnotice that we have replaced our staticmenus with digital boards; we used touse hand-written dry erase boards forour specials, but now we feature arevolving digital board. Even thoughwe’ve done some things to modernize, our food is still the same, originalrecipes, the Ifuku family still ownsand operates the restaurant and wehaven’t changed the food or its pres-entation one bit.”
Following a brief absence becauseof a lack of supply and soaring prices, mahi mahi recently made its return tothe Rainbow menu at the start of thenew year. Customers may indulge infavorites including Mahi Plate($8.25), which features tender, juicypieces of fish with tartar sauce andMahi Sandwich ($4.50).
“I don’t know why there was a
shortage, but I do know that mahimahi was difficult if not impossible toget,” Gusukuma says. “And, if youcould get it, it was so expensive thatwe decided not to serve it because oneof the things Rainbows is known foris good value. At the time, mahi wasvery popular, but the cost-per-platewould have been too high for us. So,we substituted ahi and katsu-ed it, andwhile customers enjoyed it, themajority of them expected mahi andwanted it back. After the first of theyear, we were able to secure somemahi mahi at a more-reasonable priceand we are offering it again. We’rehappy to do it, too.”
Mahi is also a major component ofthe eatery’s most popular plate, MixPlate ($7.75). The heaping helpingfeatures mahi mahi, teriyaki barbecuebeef and boneless chicken all perchedatop the standard two scoops of riceand a scoop of macaroni salad.Boneless Chicken ($7) is another localfavorite, and comes smothered withbrown gravy.
“Our Mix Plate is the most popularplate,” says Gusukuma as he offersadvice to a first-time customer whowas in awe of all the tasty offeringsfrom which to choose. “It’s kind of a
sampler, so it has mahi mahi fillet, teriyaki beef and our boneless chickencutlet. Boneless Chicken is our secondmost popular plate, and it comes withbrown gravy. Although Mix Plate isthe most popular, Boneless Chicken isnot far behind.”
Customers also return for otherlocal favorites including BBQ Pork($7.25), which features a marinadethat has been used since the store orig-inally opened, as well as Chili Plate($6). Rainbow chili has become sopopular that the restaurant now sellsindividual chili mix packets so cus-tomers can make and enjoy the dish athome. Hawaiian Style ChiliSeasoning and Rub ($4.95) is avail-able at the RainbowTiki store locatednext door to the restaurant, andGusukuma suggests using the powderas both a seasoning as well as a dryrub for spicing grilled meat. The storealso offers everything under theproverbial rainbow, from T-shirts andhats to bags and gift cards.
And, as a special scoop for DiningOut readers, Gusukuma announcedthat customers will soon be able topurchase packets of Rainbow’sfamous brown gravy and pancakemix. Stop by the RainbowTiki storeafter ordering a plate for more details.
“We’re grateful that our customershave allowed us to be here for the last50 years, and we really, really appreci-ate it,” says Gusukuma as he smileswhile watching customers dig intotheir plate lunches. “If you’ve beenhere before, you know that we try tokeep our prices as low as possible, andgive quick service while serving goodfood. That’s the secret to our success. If we didn’t have the customers whocontinually support us, we wouldn’tbe able to do what we do.”

Since Sakura Terraceopened on SouthKing Street in
November, it has alreadybecome a local hot spotknown for fresh seafoodand affordable yet upscaleJapanese fare.
Its name references thesakura, or cherry blossom, which blooms each springfor a fleeting moment, leaving many eager tocatch a glimpse of theflower’s immense beauty.Holding an array of sym-bolisms, the sakura bringsnew beginnings, just as itsnamesake ventures intonew culinary frontiers withirresitable hot items — allserved on hot plates andavailable briefly, like theblossom itself.
Locals fell in love withthe eatery’s instant hitssuch as Sakura ChirashiSushi Don and Spicy AhiDon. And before long, you
will delight in SakuraSteak ($15) as well, featur-ing 8 ounces of sautéedUSDA Choice Steak.Marketing directorMarilyn Cariaga suggestsdipping the succulent meatinto a mixure of ponzusauce and grated daikonwith a touch of Japanesepepper for a twist. The dishalso comes with asparagus, shiitake mushrooms, redand yellow peppers, rice, miso soup and wasabi.
As tasty as the springbloom is beautiful, SakuraNimono ($7) is a hard-to-find appetizer includingboiled daikon, shaped intoa cherry blossom and filledwith chopped shrimp. Themixture is simmered in asoy, mirin and sake saucealong with a medley ofJapanese fishcake, kon-nyaku, shiitake mushroomand quail eggs.
The comfortably moderndining space, complete withindoor and outdoor seating,as well as chic interiordesign, serves up other siz-zling appetizers such asBroiled Ika (whole) andJapanese Barbecue Ribs, both priced at $9. BlackTiger Shrimp ($9) issautéed in a butter sauce, and topped with garlicchips and a side of broccoli.
For an elegant lunch orromantic dinner, take inSakura’s flowering menubefore the season changes.

Blue Hawaii is notyour average sushiplace. In addition to
head chef BronsonLizares’ delicious Japanesecreations — includingSixty-Nine Roll ($15),Rainbow Roll ($15) andChirashi Bowl ($11.95) —the friendly Pearl City spotrecently added internation-ally inspired menu items.
Sink your teeth into theParty Platter ($21), aremarkable deal with twobacon-wrapped asparagusspears, two ebi fry, two kakifry, three mussels, sautéedmushrooms, and sweet chiliand katsu sauces. StuffedChicken Wings ($7.95alone) steal the sharableplatter’s spotlight with aperfectly seasoned Thai fill-ing of ground pork, longrice, carrots, fish sauce, gar-lic and spices.
Management partnerEmerson Ribao’s inspira-tion for expanding themenu stems from his desireto give customers the din-ing experience they want.“I go around the tables and
ask for any kindof suggestions, and customerssay, ‘I wish youcould have this.’So a lot of whatI put in themenu is guidedby the customer,” explainsthe ever-charming Ribao.
That’s how he came upwith Spaghetti Basilico($7.95), a mildly spicy blendof garlic, basil, pasta andmore, inspired by a patronseeking more vegetarianoptions. Ribao puts a spin on
the old favorite by addingshiso, an aromatic leaf pop-ular in Japanese cooking.
Even though much ofthe restaurant’s menu isnew, the customer responsehas been tremendous, withpopular dishes such asCheese Bread ($4.95),Shrimp Purses ($6.95) andWind Surf & Turf ($16.95)drawing in diners.
Unique new itemsinclude “W” Roll ($7) withbacon-wrapped asparagussushi and Mussels ala “M”($6.95), a muscular versionof escargot. The initials inboth titles represent staffmembers who helped con-cieve the recipes, a sign ofthe personal touch thatgoes into everything atBlue Hawaii.
Join the others headingdown to the restaurantwhere you can count ongreat sushi, but also trydiverse cuisine.

Although tucked away in quiet ManoaValley, Hanaki Restaurant has beendrawing in the customers with
favorites like Chicken Udon ($11.95) andShrimp Tempura Donburi ($11.95) and, ofcourse, shabu shabu. Located in ManoaMarketplace, Hanaki is a great place to stopby for a lunch break or enjoy a family dinner.
“We specialize in shabu shabu meals, butwe also continue to provide our ShrimpTempura ($4.50 for a side order), ChickenKaraage ($4.50 for a side order) andMisoyaki Butterfish ($4.50 for a side order)that everybody loves,” explains general man-ager Mark Mitsuyoshi. These dishes also areavailable as options for Combination Plates(two-choice plate for $9.95; three-choiceplate for $12.95). One popular CombinationPlate is the two-choice plate with ShrimpTempura and Chicken Karaage. AllCombination Plates are served with rice andmiso soup.
Other popular a la carte items are TeriyakiChicken ($4.50 for a side order), Crispy Gau
Gee ($4.50 for a side order), and a variety oframen, udon and donburi dishes. Try the newSpicy Beef Ramen for $12.95.
The shabu shabu option provides an arrayof soups, herbs, vegetables, meat and seafoodto choose from — and an opportunity to cookup everything yourself. Customers can selectany combination of ingredients. The cost of ashabu shabu meal depends on individualselections, but Mitsuyoshi says the averageprice per person is $13 or more, adding thatprices for shabu shabu meals tend to be lowerper person with larger groups.
First, diners start by choosing a soup. Soupflavors include Miso, Beef, and Seafood, which is a light, shio-based soup with anonion flavor. Other options are Curry, whichis a heavy, creamy soup flavored withcoconut milk, and Spicy, which is a strong,beef-based flavor. There’s also Konbu, whichis a light soy sauce-based udon soup, andSukiyaki has a strong soy sauce and sweet sugarflavor. You also can choose from a variety ofherbs, including goji berries, dried dates, gin-
Hanaki Restaurant in Manoa hasbeen a local favorite since1996, and since introducing its
shabu shabu options, the restaurant has become a haven forfoodies looking for quality do-it-yourself dining.
“We have liked shabu shabu for many years now, and wehave wanted to do something like this for a while,” saysHanaki general manager Mark Mitsuyoshi. Wanting to shareits love of shabu shabu, Hanaki began offering shabu shabutwo years ago.
One of the best parts of shabu shabu is that each individualcan cater the dish to their own preferences.
“You can create exactly what you you want to eat,” he says, adding that the most popular ingredients include sliced primerib, pork loin, lamb, fishcake, stuffed aburage, pork tsukune, udon noodles and enoki mushrooms.
“Shabu shabu is a fun and easy way to have a great andhealthy lunch or dinner,” says Mitsuyoshi. Additionally, Hanakitries to use fresh produce from local vendors when possible.
Not only is Hanaki’s shabu shabu healthy and tasty, but it’salso convenient.
“Shabu shabu is great for a quick lunch,” Mitsuyoshi explains.“Pick your soup, choose your food — it just takes a few minutes, and you’re ready to eat. No waiting. It’s easy.”
With its spacious dining room, Hanaki also is perfect for familygatherings, as well as quick lunches.
“It’s a very good place for family meals,” Mitsuyoshi says. “Kidscan easily get all their nutrition in a meal, while having fun doing it.”

Since the 1960s,Shiro’s SaiminHaven has been the
No. 1 pick among dinerswhen it comes to classiccomfort food such assaimin, sandwiches andmore. And with close to200 local delights on themenu, you’ll never tire ofShiro’s delicious fare.
“Saimin is what we’reknown for, in fact, we have65 different saimin optionsto choose from,” says man-
ager Bryce Fujimoto. “Thesaimin noodles are madefrom scratch at our noodlefactory on DillinghamBoulevard and our broth isa secret recipe — but wecan tell you that it’s veryclean and made with a kelpbase. We don’t use chickenor pork,” he adds.
And while all Shiro’s
saimin favorites areworth a try, seafoodaficionados will loveOyster Saimin ($9.35),a newer addition to themenu.
“We decided to addit to the menu becauseI like to feature thingsthat I like to eat, andoysters are one of myfavorite foods,”Fujimoto says. “Ithought we neededmore seafood on themenu as well, so it’s agood addition to our large
saimin selection.”Oyster saimin fea-
tures a heaping bowlof saimin swimmingin your choice oforiginal broth or hotand spicy broth (foran additional cost)with three oysters, lightly breaded inpanko and deep-fried. Wun tun also
accompanies the dish, aswell as a medley of vegeta-bles and garnishes, includ-ing Chinese cabbage, greenonion, luncheon meat, charsiu and sliced egg.
“People seem to reallyenjoy this saimin, but whenit comes to a Shiro’s classicthat would definitely haveto be Beeg Shiro ($7.25),”
Fujimoto states. Now, believe it or not,
saimin is not a part of thisrestaurant original, insteadFujimoto describes BeegShiro as a triple-deckersandwich. Hope you’rehungry!
“Beeg Shiro is servedwith three buns, slices of teribeef, char siu, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato, and aside of fries. Throughout theyears it’s still maintained itspopularity.”
Shiro’s Saimin Haven islocated in Ewa Beach,Waimalu and Waipahu.Planning a party or just inthe mood for some tastysaimin? Shiro’s and itsfriendly staff can cater to allyour needs, as personalizedcatering also is available.

Looking for a family-friendly restaurantwith a homey
atmosphere, serving upsome of Hawaii’s mostsought-out local favorites?Check out the recentlyopened Ert’s Grill, locatedin Aiea Town Square.
The eatery, which openedlast August, is co-owned byStephen (Steve) Ichiokaand Clyde Higa, who high-light its originality.
“The main thing that weemphasize is the way wecook and serve is with loveor aloha,” Ichioka says.“Everything is homemade. This restaurant is namedfor my brother Robert, whopassed away in 2010 … heused to tell everybody, ‘Mybrother can cook.’”
Prior to opening Ert’sGrill, Ichioka and Higawere partners along withsome other individuals inBlazin’ Steaks. Openingtheir own restaurant was anaccomplishment, in asense, as being a part ofBlazin’ Steaks “fueled thefire” to start their own com-pany.
“It (being partners inBlazin Steaks) was a smalltaste of what we could do,so after that, we opened upthis place,” Ichioka says.
At Ert’s Grill, customerscan choose between break-fast entrées (meat choicesinclude bacon, Spam,Portuguese sausage, Viennasausage and hot dog), sand-wiches and plate lunches(served with two scoops of
white or brown rice and achoice of corn, macaronisalad or tossed salad). When it comes to theeatery’s signature dishes,Ichioka says the most pop-ular would be HomemadeHamburger Steak ($5 mini;$7.50 regular), in which thepatties are homemade.Smoked Meat with Onions($8), currently a Fridayspecial, also is popular.
Another highly requestedentrée at Ert’s Grill is Eric’sHomemade Chili ($4 forbowl, $7.50 for Chili withHot Dog, $7 for Loco ChiliMoco), named for Ichioka’snephew, Eric.
“Eric helped me make it(the chili) so he got credit,”Ichioka says with a laugh.“Our chili is differentbecause we put bacon andsausage in it.”
One of the eatery’snewest items, Keiki SportsPack ($3.25) — featuring ascoop of rice, hot dogs andteriyaki chicken — isbecoming a favorite, asnumerous customers haveordered it ever since it wasintroduced about threeweeks ago.
“It’s pretty recent; theteriyaki chicken can be sub-stituted for any meat wehave on the menu,” addsIchioka.
Ert’s Grill is not only afavorite because of its platelunch selections, but alsobecause it serves breakfastall day.
“Ert’s Big Breakfast
($7.50) — three eggs, twoscoops of rice and two meatchoices — is really popular,as is the Steak & Eggs($7),” says Higa.
“Our steak is popularbecause we always use agood cut of meat,” addsIchioka. “Our BreakfastBento ($6.75) is really pop-ular. It has steak, two eggs, two scoops of rice withfurikake and a hot dog.”
Specials change daily atErt’s Grill, featuring dishessuch as Smoked Meat withOnions. The eatery origi-nally featured four specialsa day, but has since reducedthe number of specials totwo entrées.
“Every day we try tomake something new, like astir fry, chicken dish orsalad,” Ichioka says. “Wewant to have somethingthat we consider original. We almost always havehomemade baked goods, too.”
In the near future, upcoming changes for theeatery include lookinginto an Ert’s Grill lunchwagon and introducing anew menu, to whichfavorites like the SmokedMeat with Onions will beadded, as well as addition-al chicken and fish items.Ichioka also notes thatErt’s Grill has been doingfundraisers for differentsports teams, in whichselect menu items, such asBreakfast Bento, are soldfor lower prices.
