Family & Church & “Church Family”Throughout  my  life,  my  family  and  my “church  family” have been  intertwined.   My parents took me to worship at First Christian Church  in  Alamogordo  when  I  was  just  an

infant.    As  I  grew,  weekly  Sunday  School  and  “church”  were always  a  part  of  my  family’s  life  ‐  and  also  the  place where  I learned what “family” means in the best sense of the word.  Since we  lived far  from my grandparents  and  cousins,  it was  natural for me to adopt “extra” grandparents at church among the many caring older adults who nurtured my young life.   When I was old enough to  go  to  church camp,  I met more of our “family” in the brothers  and  sisters  in  Christ  whom  I  encountered  along  the banks of the Black River in southeastern New Mexico.  Now  my  church  family  extends  across  the  country  and around  the  globe.    There  are  Disciples  whom  I  love  dearly  in congregations  I’ve  served from Kentucky,  to  Arizona to  Illinois.  There are  Catholic  brothers  and sisters  in Christ who  touched my  heart  and  soul  during  Cursillo  weekends.    There  are  the American  Baptists  in  Des  Moines  who  welcomed  me  every summer when I spent time at Grandma’s house.   When Charles and I attended General Assembly in Orlando this July, it felt like a wonderful  homecoming  to  see  people who’ve  blessed my  faith journey in the past  ‐ and  to meet new “cousins of  the cross” as we gathered in worship together in the Assembly Hall.  For some people,  family means just Mom or Dad and kids ‐ for others, family is huge, including 2nd and 3rd cousins, inlaws and shirt‐tail  relatives.   At our house,  we’re blessed that  family also  means  the  exchange  students  we’ve  claimed  as  “sons” through  the  years.    I  look  forward  to  your  getting  to  know Emanuele  Frascadore,  our  Italian  son who’s  studying  at  NCHS this  year.    For  me,  family  will  also  always  include  the  dear grandparents  and  siblings  who’ve  adopted  me  as  their  own through our shared love of Jesus Christ.    I hope that you’ll be in worship on Sept.  8  to  meet  a wonderful  brother  in  the  faith  ‐ Todd  Adams,  our  Associate  General  Minister.    If  you’ve  been away  from  the faith family with summer  travels,  there  couldn’t be a better time to come back home!                 ~Pastor Cynthia

THANK YOU’s...To our friends at First Christian Church! Cecelia’s dementia gets more severe each month. But I’m still able to take care of some of her needs but the staff here does most of the things. We will have what they call “Memory Rooms” on the first floor by the middle of September and we are first in line. These rooms are designed for several types of memory loss; strokes, head injuries, Alzheimer’s and dementia. Luckily we have long term health insurance which will take effect next month. Our daughter Kris Handley and I passed through Casper on July 13th on our way to Gunnison, CO for a memorial service for my older brother. While in Casper we were able to spend a few hours with our granddaughter Shante’ Jackson and her daughter Adrianna. I guess that makes Cecelia and I great grandparents but we love it. If I can figure out the logistics, I will bring her down to Casper for a few days and attend church at FCC and visit with our friends. ~~~In Christian Love, Ceceila and Roger Miller

Quote from FCCʼs facebook page...Something special about vacation bible school when I picked up my kids the first thing I asked my 4 year old son Brady was “What did you learn tonight?” He said” that cheez luv us”. Thank you first Christian for teaching our children that Jesus loves them!!. What a blessing!! by Misty Enstrom Dibble

I cannot express adequately the deep feeling of joy in my heart when I received the letter and prayers from FCC, Casper!!! It truly brought tears to my eyes & a sense of being church that I have not experienced very often. Thank you! Please express my gratitude to the wonderful folks with whom you serve!! Blessings, Dani Loving Cartwright – Regional Minister in the Southwest

Wednesday Night Discussion Supper for youth in grades 6-12 will begin in September on Wednesday evenings, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. as soon as we have volunteers to facilitate these gatherings. Youth will share a prayer and supper. This will be a time for our youth to connect, plan youth fellowship and service events. Discussion topics and/or activities will vary. Sometimes youth will separate into middle school and high school--depending on the evening and the availability of adult volunteers. We need two types of facilitators for these youth suppers--one to eat with the youth and participate in discussion and/or activity and one that would provide the supper. A signup sheet is posted on the bulletin board outside the church office or you can contact Jennifer Grooms or the church office.

Help Needed!!!We have received a request from a communitymember regarding help needed for hermother‐in‐law.  Some of the services that sheneeds  help  with  are  painting  the  house,  outside  and/or  inside, cutting  back  or  removing  juniper  trees,  and possibly  some  other work.    The woman will  furnish  the  supplies  to  do  the  work  and would appreciate anything that we can do.   Her mother‐in‐law may be going into an assisted living  facility but if it does not work  out, she will be going back home to  live.    If anyone would be willing to help with any of these projects or would be willing to put together a team  of  volunteers  to  tackle  any  or  all  of  these  projects,  please contact Debbie Mestas, Co‐chair Social Action at 265‐0647._____________________________________________________________________________

“Defining Moment” Wills, Memorials, Trusts & Scholarships

Did you know that in the past year “Wills, Memorials, Trusts and Scholarships” has given out $3,100.00 in scholarships to the youth of our church? Many of the recipients over the past years have gone on to be teachers, engineers, accountants, social workers, and many other professions. Through these opportunities, the recipients have become leaders in our community, church and nation. They do make a difference in their lives, their family’s lives, the church and the community, influencing and defining our society in many positive ways. Thank you to all of our past and present donators who make this possible! FCC certainly appreciates the impact donors have made and/or will make in the lives of our past, present, and future recipients. Scholarship funds are another way our church gives to the community and in turn helps define it. What is or will be one of your “Defining Moments”? Could you? Would you? For more information on applying for a scholarship or donating to the scholarship fund, contact Judy Baker - 277-1530. Anonymous and confidential donations to the fund(s) can be accommodated. WMTS has also awarded $1,260 in Preschool Scholarships from funds earned in the Pumpkin Patch

Living with Gratitude

For more than 50 years, the women of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) have had a special way to express their gratitude to God for the blessings they have received--the Blessing Box. The Blessing Box was created in 1953, the result of a dream of the women who founded Christian Womenʼs Fellowship. Jessie Trout, who was CWFʼs co-founder and first executive secretary, developed the idea as an over--and--above way to help fund the wider mission of the church. Since that time Blessing Boxes have been kept in the homes and offices of women across the church to enable them to express their gratitude for everyday blessings by giving to others. Thanks is given for a sunny day, a birth, a reconciling experience, a welcome phone call, a childʼs smile, a beautiful snow fall, a flower in bloom, relief from pain, a good book, a safe journey, and many other things. It is a way of saying “Thank you God, for your world and especially for people.”

If you have coins jingling around in yourBlessing Box, would you please give themoney to Lois Koch or Jo Cox prior toAugust 31st? As we do every year, ourmembers who attend the mid SeptemberRenewal will report on the amount of Blessing Box donationsour members have made during the past year for the Disciples Mission Fund and that has been sent to the Fund.
