SET ACTIVITY CREATED
P R I O R K N O W L E D G E I D E N T I F I E D
Vocabulary: right triangle, ratio, angle, hypotenuse side, opposite side, and
adjacent side
Asking student about sin, cos, and tan
Watching a video on Trigonometry
Soh - Sine = Opposite / Hypotenuse
Cah - Cosine = Adjacent / Hypotenuse
toa - Tangent = Opposite / Adjacent
"Opposite" is opposite to the angle θ
"Adjacent" is adjacent (next to) to the angle θ
"Hypotenuse" is the long one other word for it
across from 90 degree

From Class
I NDEPENDENT PRACTI CE
1. Find theta
2. What is the two different method of SOH-CAH-
TOA to find the missing side( variable) by the two
Example: what are the sine, cosine and
tangent of 30° ?
The classic 30° triangle has a
hypotenuse (the long side) of length 2, an
opposite side of length 1 and an adjacent
side of √3.
Checking for Understanding
These are the four steps we need to follow:
Step 1 Decide which two sides we know –
out of Opposite, Adjacent and Hypotenuse.
Step 2 Use SOHCAHTOA to decide which
one of Sine, Cosine or Tangent to use in this
question.
Step 3 Use your calculator to calculate the
fraction Opposite/Hypotenuse,
Adjacent/Hypotenuse or Opposite/Adjacent.
Step 4 Find the angle from your calculator,
using one of sin-1, cos-1 or tan-1
Closure Review on Solving Right Triangles Using Trigonometry
•Step 1: The two sides we know are Opposite (300) and Adjacent (400).•Step 2: SOHCAHTOA tells us we must use Tangent.•Step 3: Use your calculator to calculate Opposite/Adjacent = 300/400 = 0.75•Step 4 : Find the angle from your calculator using tan-1Tan x° = opposite/adjacent = 300/400 = 0.75
tan-1 of 0.75 = 36.9°.

Materials/Technology:
Worksheets, paper, pencils, calculators, protractors, PowerPoint
Presentation and Chalk Board.
MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES
Mathematical/logical – shows students how to solve SOH-CAH-TOA step by step.
Music – played a video on how to apply sine, cosine and tangent.
Interpersonal – group work
Bodily/kinesthetic – students moving around and post their answer on the board .
Common core Standards
Right Triangles and Trigonometry G-SRT
Define trigonometric ratios and solve problems involving right
triangles
1. Understand that by similarity, side ratios in right triangles are
properties of the angles in the triangle, leading to definitions of
trigonometric ratios for acute angles.
2. Explain and use the relationship between the sine and cosine of
complementary angles.
3. Use trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve right
triangles in applied problems.★
