    HAVE YOU SEEN MY

NAILS Magazine has totally reinvented our online Nail Art Gallery: Now it’s a little bit Flickr, a little bit Facebook, and a lot of amazing nail artistry. Use this tutorial to help you set up your profi le and get started sharing and interacting right away. Pretty soon you’ll be using our catchphrase: Have you seen MY Nail Art Gallery? BY HANNAH LEE

Our brand-new Nail Art Gallery, which has long been

the most popular section of our website, has been

completely redesigned, and I know you’ll love it. It’s a

cross between Facebook and Flickr, and allows you to

do more to showcase your own art, as well as browse

and get inspired by other nail artists’ work.

On Nail Art Gallery 2010, you can create a personal

profi le, become a fan of other nail artists, and upload

all of your nail art photos in one easy-to-share place.

In addition, you can interact with other nail artists by

browsing, liking, or commenting on other techs’ art

    and photos.

I’m hoping you’ll visit the site at nailartgallery.

nailsmag.com. You don’t have to register to browse,

but I think once you see the fantastic artwork you’ll be

inspired to create your own profi le. Use this article to

give you some pointers for maximizing your Nail Art

    Gallery experience.

1 Create your username and password.

You can log in using your Facebo

    ok

    username and password.

You can create your account directly on our site or, if you are already on Facebook, by using Facebook Connect. Facebook doesn’t share any other information with us and your Nail Art Gallery will not be displayed on your Facebook page (unless you specifically link to it). Create your profile.

    Upload your profile photo.

Since it’s a social networking tool, the more you enter, the more you’ll be able to interact with other nail technicians who share your passion for nail art.

On your first log-in, you’ll be prompted to Update User Info. This is where you enter your name, city, state, salon name, website, and a brief bio about yourself. You can enter as much or as little of this information as you want.

Upload a photo of yourself. This allows other members to see who you are.

Once you’ve created your account, entered your profile information and uploaded your profile picture, you’re ready to start!

Feel free to post your own photo, a photo of

your nail art, or anything creative that you

    want to represent you here.

WHY GO PRO?There are two levels to the Nail Art Gallery. Everyone can join for free and have access to all the features listed on these pages. You’ll be able to upload up to 50 pictures at no charge.

For more prolifi c nail artists, we off er the Pro Membership. A $20 annual subscription allows you unlimited photo uploads, a second profi le page for your salon photos and salon information (a great promotional tool for you!), promotional spots as a “Featured Nail Artist” in the pages of NAILS Magazine and on our Nail Art Channel homepage, the ability to download your original high-resolution photos, and a PRO label on your profi le. We’ll be running promotions throughout the year on Facebook and Twitter, on our blogs, at events, and in the magazine. So make sure to keep your eyes peeled.

    4 Start uploading your photos.

The upload tool will make the a

    ctual image

the exact right size for the galler

    y.

You can tag brand names (Young

    Nails, OPI, CND,

for example) or you can tag

    themes (Holiday,

    Easter, Summer, Floral, Anima

    ls, etc.). We have

    pre-populated some common the

    mes, so when you

start typing, you’ll see them pop

    up automatically.

You can also tag types of produ

    cts used (Glitter,

Mylar, Shells, etc.) or nail s

    tyles themselves

    (Stiletto, Edge, Competition, etc.)

    .

It’s so easy to upload photos to the new Nail Art Gallery. Select a JPEG image from your computer that is at least 500 pixels wide (for horizontal images) or 300 pixels high (for vertical images). Give your artwork a title, and at the bottom of the input screen, check off the application style you used so techs searching for, say, gel designs will have a way to find them.

We also recommend (but don’t require) that you put in some sort of description about the nails. That might be a brief explanation of how you did the nails, what products you used, where you got the inspiration, or maybe even which of your clients you did the nails for.

The last part of the photo upload process is tagging your photos. Again, you aren’t required to, but we highly recommend that you tag your photos so they will come up in more search and browse functions. The more tags you use, the more likely your nails will be seen by visitors to the site.

This really helps other viewers understand your art better and we think it will encourage interaction between nail artists.

We discourage watermarks on your images. You can read our watermark policy on the site, but basically we think it obscures your art and makes it diffi cult for us to use the picture on the home page of the Nail Art Gal-lery, in the pages of NAILS, or as a featured artist on other portions of the NAILS website. That said, we aren’t banning photos with watermarks, but please read our policy to make them more user-friendly.

5 Start interacting with other artists.

There are several ways to get started. You might choose to search by Artist. Once you click on another artist’s page, you can read the bio, “Send a Message” to the nail artist, click on the “Become a Fan” button, or start browsing through her photos.

On each photo detail page, you can click the “Like” button if you want to show you like that nail art, or you can leave comments below each photo.

We encourage positive interaction on the site, so if you don’t like some-thing we suggest you simply move on to the next photo.

We’ve implemented a system to allow the site users to keep things professional: If a picture is offensive, you can click the “Report Offensive” button under the photo. If a comment is offensive, you can click on the yellow triangle next to the specifi c comment. It takes three different members to mark a comment as offensive and then it will be taken down.

    Report as Offen

    6 Browse at your leisure.

That’s basically it — six easy steps to becoming an engaged and active member of Nail Art Gallery. Have fun! This site is a place for you to keep all of your nail art pictures in one place so you can show them off to your peers, your friends and family, and your clients. We encourage you to share the link to your Nail Art Gallery profile with as many people as you want. And we hope you’ll be inspired by other artists’ work. We know we are inspired by you all every day.

You can always go up to the top of the page and look at Most Recent, Most Popular, and Most Active Artists; or you can look at Most Recent, Most Popular, and Most Viewed Photos. But let me share a little trick for improved browsing. Once you’re in the photo detail of an image you like, look on the right hand column of the page. There you’ll find several ways to browse.

    Browse by application style.

(If you only want to see gel

    nail art or hand-painted art,

    for instance.)

Browse all photos by that artist. (If you like the style and want to see more from the artist.)

Browse all photos on the whole site. (If you just want to see a variety of nail art.)

Browse by tags. This is where

the tagging comes in handy. If

you are looking at a design that

    was created with Young Nails

    products, you can use the

    Young Nails tag to browse

through all the nails that have

    been tagged Young Nails.

Say you’re looking at a design with Glitter and you want to see more nails like it. You can simply use the Glitter tag to browse through all the nails that have been tagged Glitter.
