A FAMILY FOUR-WHEELING CLUB DEDICATED TO THE MOTTO •••••••• “TREAD LIGHTLY!”
The
Havasu 4 Wheelers
TRAIL TALK Your monthly club newsletter November 2010 Volume 18, Number 11
P residents Message Happy Thanksgiving
to all H4W members
and their families!
We are to be thankful
for all the blessings
we enjoy in this great country of
ours. And a large part of the thanks
goes to our veterans who have fought
to keep us free and to those serving
today in uniform around the world.
You can thank them by taking part
in the Veterans‟ Day Parade
November 11th. Decorate your jeeps
and join the celebrations. And for the
many H4W‟ers that are veterans – this one‟s for you! See you
there.
And we will be holding our annual Turkey Roast on Saturday
November 13th at Campbell Ranch. Join us for an afternoon of
fun, jeep games, and then of course, great food. The jeep games
start at 2 pm and dinner at 4 PM. It‟s your club so get involved –
it‟s all good stuff!
To keep the Trail Bosses communicating we have a Trail Boss
meeting set for November 10th. Those of you interested in leading
runs please show up. And to build your skills we have an
advanced 4X4 course set for November 22nd.
Let me extend a big „Thank You!‟ to those members who
participated in the annual London Bridge Days parade. With 31
jeeps the H4W‟ers made a statement to the public and BLM that
we are a force to be reckoned with! Mike MacLean - great job!
And the fun continued later that day as Willie Williams hosted a
Pizza Pie in the Park Party.
Now “back to business” – We continue our response to the BLM
about our desert trails. We hosted two public comment letter
writing clinics. This is the most critical challenge we as a club have
ever faced in our seventeen year history. Our responses to the
BLM, both as individuals and as an organization, are critical.
Everyone please send the BLM comment letters.
See you on the trails, Bruce

High Line Trail
O n Oct 2, 2010, despite a forecast high of 103
degrees, 7 jeeps showed up to do the run. This
is the first run I have done that included visual
and audio effects…….lightening, thunder and rain. Made
the run much more interesting. With the storm front it
kept the temperature down but the rain did play a little
havoc when it came time for lunch.
Everyone did such a super job driving I don‟t have any
wild stories to tell you despite that fact the rain was really
pouring down on some of the more technical aspects of
the run. The only real excitement is when I almost got a
new hood ornament…..a motorcycle, going at a pretty
good speed, came around a blind curve and for a moment
thought he would become part of my jeep. A disaster
diverted.
We did stop at U-Go Falls and had 2 jeeps successfully
traverse the waterfall. With the current Trail
Management Plan this route is closed on both Map C &
D, so we decided to take advantage of it while we could.
I want to say thank you to the people who came on the
run and a special Thank You to Tom Bunnell for being
tail gunner.

Cat Tail Run
O n September 25th, after meeting up with eight
avid jeepers, who weren‟t afraid of the heat
(105 degrees), we started the run A.S.A.P.
Everyone went over the obstacle with a minimum
amount of spotting, which made it very easy for me
(Thank You Guy‟s). We had lunch in the shade of a nice
cool cliff with a very nice cool breeze, which was soooooo
refreshing. On our way back there were a number of
extra credit‟s that was collected, and we ALL went up
the Bowling Alley. I had fun, and I believe everyone else
did also.
Thanks to Steve Perry for tail gunning, and thanks to all
who had the fortitude to attend this run on such a warm
day.

Goat Hill Passage
T he run on Oct 6, 2010 did not get off to a good
start thanks to the trail boss giving incorrect
information as to where the meeting location
was. Half were at the location listed on the web and the
other half were at Fantom & Reef. We managed to get
everyone together, after I realized my error, and the 8
jeeps headed out on the run.
Everyone managed to climb the first sandy hill without
any problem. That area is known for stopping a few jeeps
dead in their tracks. The rest of the run is very scenic in
nature with its share of ups and downs to keep you awake.
I think this run should be called Burro Haven. We spotted
4 different groups of burros….with the smallest group
being 4 and the largest 8. Never remember seeing that
many burros on one run.
I want to apology for the incorrect listing of the meeting
location, and thank those who came on the run. A special
Thank You to Bob Drew for being tail gunner.

Copperhead Run
S aturday October 9th, nine vehicles gathered at
Sara Park for this run and due to the fact that
everyone, except one couple had been on this
run the drivers meeting was a snap. After traveling to
our air down location and starting the trail on this
beautiful fall morning, there isn‟t a lot to say until we
got to the narrow ridge area, which everyone traversed
with style. And of course this area is adjacent to J.B.‟s
Revenge and is of interest to many of our drivers, who
walked over to take a look. Well, our tail gunner Steve
Perry, with his Kreuzenstein special modified jeep put
on an exhibition for everyone by driving up through this
short but gnarly canyon with Dave Billick spotting. This
naturally WOWed everyone. We then continued on
entering the wash that leads to Copperhead Canyon,
and it may be noted that this wash provides several
challenges of its own. Once in the canyon besides a few
boulders, we came to the off camber squeeze, and every-
one made it through with no problems other than
leaving some black paint from their slider rails on the
rocks. After that there were numerous rocks, some
large, some medium, culminating at the end with a
medium size waterfall.
We then climbed up and out of the wash, and had lunch
on top of one of the mesa‟s. From here we wandered
around some of the beautiful rock outcroppings, past
the tailing pile from the 12 mile tunnel, down into a red
sandstone lined wash and up and over a sand dune area
to our air up spot, and on to home.
Thanks to Steve Perry for tail gunning, and the
exhibition, and also to all who attended. What a great
group to wheel with.

Trail Talk - 4 - November 2010
Safety Committee “Trail Talk” Safety Rant of the Month –
“Oh where oh where has my little dog gone, oh
where oh where can he be, oh now I remember
he jumped in the jeep, he’s gone four wheeling
with me!”
Lots of people have pets -
the most common being cats
or dogs with the most
frequently encountered when
wheeling is the dog. While
they are man’s best friend
we need to remember that we brought them along
so therefore we are responsible for their well-
being and safety. While a helmet and fire suit
may not be necessary while in the jeep they must
be controlled while out of it. Keep them on a
leash for their own safety and the comfort of
other 4 wheelers (I just can’t believe people get
upset when a dog sticks his head in their lunch
box, jumps on them with dirty feet, or uses their
tire as a urinal). Plus a loose dog dashing about is
a hazard to all when jeeps are maneuvering. And
the old “sticking the nose into every bush” frenzy
could likely result in a find of something very
nasty.
Our area is known for rattlesnakes so for those
of you who frequent the outdoors with their dogs
you may want to check with the local vets to see
if they stock anti-venom. It’s expensive and has
a short shelf life so its unknown if any LHC vet
may routinely stock it. If not you may have to go
to Kingman or Bullhead - Best to call around now
to find out. Also Red Rock Biologics offers a
vaccine to defend your dog by creating an
immunity that works right away to help neutralize
the toxins. Here’s a link -
http://www.redrockbiologics.com/
Coyotes are out and you’re in their “house” when
in the boonies. Coyotes can and do kill dogs using
the pack technique of calling a dog out and then
they all gang in. Also cactus is bad on the snout
and feet so carry a small pair of needle nose
pliers. They also work on your two legged buddies
too.

Boriana Mine Run October 14th
A cool morning greeted 10 jeeps, 16 members
and one guest as we headed east on the 40
from the 95. As we traveled toward the Alamo
Road exit we noticed the state had money again as the
rest stop was open. At the start of the Boriana Road we
aired down and fine turned some radios coming out of
their summer slumber. Then it was off to the Hualapai‟s.
No breeze meant our Tail Gunners Ladell and Judy
Olson were driving by radar at times. Once the track
narrowed the dust subsided and we started our climb.
Early West stopped the group just prior to the Boriana
Mine and surprised us with a little noticed spring and
pond filled with goldfish left by the miners. We then
stopped at the Boriana mine where Howard Wicks led the
group to a second but much larger goldfish pond. We
continued and crested the top of the Hualapais. The trees
were turning in the fall colors – brilliant yellows, oranges,
and reds contrasted against the green pines and shrubs.
We also came across 4 large elk. We stopped at the pine
grove for lunch under the trees. As we headed out Larry
Martin noticed his front sway bar rod end had ripped off
one side. The immediate emergency call went out -
“Ladell !” He organized a virtual Indy 500 pit crew and
out came the tool kit. The fix was made and off we went.
The group stopped to inspect the newly reopened road
that drops down west into Walnut Canyon. Off again and
we climbed to 7,000 feet and then down to the Hualapai
Lodge where more elk and lots of Mule Deer greeted us.
A great day and a fun run. Thank you to AED crew
Chuck and Sue Guibord and Tail Gunners Ladell and
Judy Olson.

Trail Talk - 6 - November 2010
Swap Meet
F or three Sunday‟s in October, members of our
jeep club were at the Swap Meet to talk to the
public regarding the BLM Trail Management
Plan. Our goal was to make them aware of the pending
trail closures and encourage them to write letter
expressing their concerns.
The response from the public was an overwhelming
“keep our trails open”. Many we talked with were from
Calif. where they have had first hand experience with
trail closures and the impact it had on the OHV use.
Some said they moved here specifically because of the
availability of the lake in the summer and the desert in
the winter. Some were winter visitors who came here to
enjoy the desert scenery and sense of freedom and
adventure of being in the desert. Some did not even use
the desert but were against the trail closures on the
principal that the desert should be available to the
people who make up this great country.
Let me tell you, the group of volunteers from our club
who helped with this endeavor were just great. Not one
person got past our booth without being approached.
They were friendly and courtesy while providing the
public with the information they needed. Good Job.
Also a big Thank You to Bob Hill for providing the EZ
up for shade and Ken Weller and Bob Carson for taking
turns being team leaders for the group.

Cooks Night Out October 26, 2010
I t‟s really hard to beat a $2 special Schlotzskys
sandwich! 23 Havasu 4 Wheelers attended the 2nd
Cooks Night Out of this Jeepin' season at Schlotzskys
in Havasu.
The food was great, the beer was cold and the service was
excellent. Thanks also to all who purchased candy bars
from Ana Hofstetter grandson to help him go on his school
trip to Italy. Everyone likes chocolate and we sold every
candy bar that he brought..
It was nice to see some familiar faces that have arrived
back in town. They all look ready to take on the trails that
were all fighting so hard to keep open!
Thanks to all who attended! Next month there won‟t be a
Cooks Night Out due to the H4W Thanksgiving
Extravaganza. Stay tuned for a Hopefully, special
December Cooks Night Out.

London Bridge Days Parade
A t last count, 33 Jeeps and one Toyota met on
McCulloch Drive for the annual London
Bridge Days Parade. After fortifying
ourselves with coffee and donuts, we departed down
McCulloch at the brisk speed of .05 mph. The vehicles
were decorated and displayed various messages to save
our trails. Our club was met with much applause and
cheers from the spectators along the parade route,
supporting our cause. I am so pleased that so many
members turned out to support the club and participate
in the parade. In fact, there were so many of us that the
radio station took a commercial break after we started,
and was back on the air before we finished.
Mike MacLean
Pizza in the Park
B oy was Jack Hardie Park busy on 10-16-10, but
we did manage to find a nice shady spot for
our pizza party. We had about 41 people
present to enjoy the pizza‟s which came in 5 different
types of toppings. Hopefully everyone found something
to satisfy their taste buds. It was a very relaxing
atmosphere giving everyone a chance to move around
and visit with each other. It was suggested we do this
more often. Sounds good to me….I like pizza.
Willie Williams
NOW IT‟S UP TO YOU!
Your public lands committee, along with other volunteers
have put in thousands of hours writing, developing
programs, attending meetings, publicizing the closures,
contacting the public and government agencies, and
researching the effects of the BLM Route closures on your
trails.
NOW IT‟S UP TO YOU!
If we don‟t get a massive amount of letters in to the BLM,
almost all of your trails will be closed. Do nothing and we
are guaranteed of 75% closure of the trails in the Havasu
area.
Go now to the havasu4wheelers.org web site. On the main
page click on the “Click here to access the BLM trail
closures page” and you will be directed to our BLM Trail
Closure Documentation page. You‟ll see a green bar with a
series of headings. Spend a few moments clicking on each
box and looking at all the information, tools and club‟s
official letter to the BLM, and sample letters for you to send
in. All the H4W trails that are threatened are listed
alphabetically below the green bar. Click on any of them
and a sample letter is presented for your use and includes
the problem HN route numbers. Read the cover letters for
ideas, read the suggested comment section, pull up the
trails, rewrite the comments in your language with your
ideas, put your signature on them and forward them by
email, or print them off and drop at BLM. You don‟t need
the BLM form as long as you have your name, address,
phone, email and HN Route numbers on your letter or
email. Share our website address and link with your jeeping
and quading friends and neighbors.
NOW IT‟S UP TO YOU!
Consider this - you devote an entire day to go out on a 4X4
run. If you do nothing we are guaranteed to loose our trails.
Your H4W team has devoted countless hours and has
produced all the information and sample letters for you to
use. It‟s all there for you - we‟ve done 95% of the work for
you so please spend just one day‟s effort and write the
comment letters! Remember, if the BLM only receives a
few letters on each trail they will not change their closure
decisions, Please do not waste all the toil and effort your
club has devoted to save your trails - now it‟s up to you!

RATING DESCRIPTION
1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.
2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.
3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.
3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.
3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. 33” tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.
3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, Some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.
4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.
5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
