TRIP REPORTS (CONTINUED)

Club members in attendance were: Walt & Gert, Pat & Ray,Clete & Randi and Justin & Cody. Guest included: Mike &Jennifer & children, Travis and Jason with his wife, mom &children.

Walt and Gert arrived on Thursday and I think they wereamazed with the size and vastness of the dunes. TheirHummer, "Tweety Bird" can really fly! We had allot of funshowing them a good time and by the looks on their faces, theytoo were enjoying the experience!

Clete and Randi arrived on Friday and had a thrill of a life time. When we took them out for a ride, it was their first trip to thedunes. They were also surprised by their size and by theamount of people who were there!

Saturday we spent riding up and down the dunes then later inthe evening sat around the camp fire and shared in the overallexperience.

Sunday we loaded up and headed home for some muchneeded rest before going back to work on Monday.

Looking forward to next year's trip and hoping you will join us!

Darrel.

Sugarloaf Run,Hello to All 4-Wheelers:It appears I have been elected to write up the good time we allhad on Dale's run Saturday. So here goes:

TRIP REPORTS (CONTINUED)

We had quite a good turnout. Club members in attendance:Trip leaders-Dale & Scoti Helton with their children Christopher& Shailynn, & friend Tylor Bennett, Darrel & Deb Wallace, JimKeller, Jim Kawa, Pat & Ray Jenkins, Mike Drawsky, Nate VanKeuren and Lee & Sami Coppage. Guests included: Clete &Randi Hruska and Steve, a close friend of Wayne and BeverlyTall.

Most of the 4-wheelers on the run, met at 7:30 at Denny'srestaurant in Fountain Hills. I made it at 5 minutes to eight.Ginnie did not come on this trip, making it the second one shemissed... Steve and wife Maggie are possible new members aswell as Clete and Randi Hruska. Wendi Kawa was also atbreakfast. Neither Maggie or Wendi went on the run. I had agood breakfast anyway.

Darrel and Debra went ahead to the starting point, and whenall were thru eating, Nate led the way to the turn-off toSugarloaf. We visited for awhile until the rest of the grouparrived, aired down then had our driver's meeting. Dale pulledout about 9:30 leading nine vehicles.

The trail was pretty good for awhile, but then it really got rough,up and down and around the hills. A lot of sharp left and rightturns at the top, which can really get you in trouble when it ishard over the hood. I missed one left turn, and bumped someboulders straight in cross ways in the trail. This time, theboulder jumped in front of me, not the tree!! No damagehowever, and I got straightened out on the trail and kept going.

All enjoyed the scenery, and about five miles on the trail, westopped for lunch. Nate furnished me with water and Debramade me a lunch meat sandwich, as I forgot both these itemswhen I left home by myself.

Several of us had never been on this trail before and we allreally enjoyed the run. After lunch, we stopped at the quartzmine, where the Grady Gammage Auditorium got its wallcovering. Of course some of us had to pick up some quartzrocks to take home.

The trail from there on, was mostly downhill with several roughspots. I think most of us were in 4-wheel drive most of the way.

End of the trail was Widow-Maker mountain. Our nervyPresident showed us how to climb the mountain. Of course twoor three others had to show their skill also. Darrel went up asecond time and came down the really narrow down trail. Itwas so narrow, he got a bucketful of mountain in his jeep. Now,Mr. Nate had to give it a go. He went up ok, and then camedown the narrows as Darrel did. Low and behold, he didn'tquite make it all the way down before the driver's side of thetop of his Bronco was ripped from front to back. Oh wellChristmas is on the way, so looks like a new top is in order!

I stated I think I could make that run up there with no problem.Mike said forget it Jim, so far you have done really good, sowhy take the chance! I readily agreed, and didn't even try.

TRIP REPORTS (CONTINUED)

Well, that is the end of Dale's trail run. There should be somegood pictures for the Horn this month. Now it's time to air upand head for home. Everyone agreed it was a real fun run.

Christmas Party

This year Santa found time to stop in and wish us a MerryChristmas and pass out gifts to the kids!

Along with celebrating the holiday season the club took time tothrow a surprise birthday party for Lee Coppage. In the centerof the cake is a picture of his Rubicon taken from last year'sM4W Snow Run.

Fred Alexander and Doc Staff continue to inspire us all withtheir long time love for the sport. The Mesa 4 Wheelers isfortunate and proud to have them as members!

We were so happy to see Jack and Sandee McCullen after along absence. Once again Jack is having to battle with cancerand although he has lost some hair, he has not lost his positiveattitude or his love for competitive rock crawling.

Kevin, Melissa and the kids are all smiles after just being votedin as M4W members. Congratulations, you guys have morethan earned it!

Trip Details:The planned route to the top is by way of Forest Road 27 fromthe north side, off the Beeline Highway. At one time the onlyroute to the top, it has long since been replaced by ForestRoad 626 and is no longer maintained. Where FR27 crossesSlate Creek, just off Highway 87, a couple of years ago heavyrains sent record amounts of runoff rushing down from aboveand washed away a wide section of the roadbed. The ForestService immediately went in and erected a locked gate toprevent people from trying to cross.

A few months back I drove by the entrance and saw the gateopen and noticed fresh tire tracks. Our goal is to reach the endof the public road, just a half mile below the fire lookout tower. Here we will break for lunch and if the group is up to it, hike theremaining 1 mile to the fire lookout tower. Our descent will beby way of FR 626. This 2-wheel drive road will lead us back tothe Beeline in less than half the time.

M4W Fun Days 2009Hi Folks, it is time to plan our great M4W Fun Days event for2009. Mark your calendars for March 27-29, 2009. First, somenotes, then the committee chairs that need to be filled. TheWallaces and I just visited Bob and Wilda Church (ranchforeman) to see the ranch and welcome them back from theirsummer jobs at Jackson Hole, Wyoming. They are excitedabout our weekend next March. We have been invited by the

"two flying cowboys" Mr. John Fowler, and Bruce Johnson touse the ranch headquarters on Cottonwood Canyon road forFun Days next spring. The location is west of mineral mountainroad and east of HWY 79 on cottonwood canyon road. N33,12', 01" and W 111, 14", 48". The elevation is 2171 ft. We willuse the same driveway the semis use to move the cattle, andmotor homes & toy-haulers will have little difficulty making thegentle grade. If you bring pets they must be leashed torespect the ranch dogs home turf. It is imperative we removeall rubbish from the event, including the camp firecinders. Water is available. Porta-Potties are a must for tentcampers. Getting to use someone's home for our event isgreat and we must respect that by leaving the area better thanwe found it. Here are the committee positions - please let meknow which positions you can fill: (Nate Van Keuren - 480-836-1926)

CURRENT NEWS

Rome the planet while taking care of it!"Leave nothing behind" just took on a whole new meaning. TheJeep EV development vehicle infuses Wrangler's go-anywherecapability with eco-friendly emissions.

For your typical commutes, the four-door Jeep EV won't sip anounce of gasoline or emit any carbon, relying on its electricmotor and advanced lithium-ion battery system for the first 40miles. When you feel like wandering, a small gasoline enginewith an integrated electric generator produces the additionalenergy needed to power the electric-drive system - up to 400miles on eight to ten gallons of gas.

If your adventure should include some off-roading, you can relyon the instant high torque of the electric-drive motor and theability to precisely control each wheel independently to get youwhere you need to go - paved or unpaved.Stay tuned for theannouncement of more additions to the Jeep EV family in themonths to come.
