SCHOOL CLOSING – DELAYED OPENINGA delayed opening of schools will be instituted in some cases of inclement weather.
Classes at all levels will commence at 10:00 a.m. on a delayed opening day.Radio stations in the metropolitan area (WOR, WINS, WCBS, WVNJ, WABC) will
announce school closings and delayed openings beginning about 6:30 a.m. Informationon local school closings or delayed openings can also be obtained by calling 288-1848and also in the Internet: cancellations.com
Parents are urged to use the local telephone number and listen to radioannouncements. Please do not phone the Police Department for closing information.
ATTENDANCERegularity of attendance and punctuality are important from the first day in
Kindergarten. They are essential requirements for a child’s steady progress throughouthis or her life.
The Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education recognizes the following as legitimatereasons for school absence: physical or emotional illness, serious illness or deathwithin the immediate family, remedial health treatments, observance of religiousholidays, and required attendance at court.
The parents of students in grades K-8 who have more than 10 days of occasionalabsences will be required to confer with the principal or guidance counselor. Secondarystudents and parents are urged to become familiar with the attendance policy at theMiddle School and High School to determine the relationship of school absences withthe loss of course credit and graduation.
When students are absent, a written excuse from home must be brought to schoolon the day of return. Parents of elementary students are requested to inform the schooleach morning that their child will be absent. The principal or his/her designee will callthe home of each absent child if no call relative to the absence has been received bythe school.
HOME INSTRUCTIONHome instruction is provided by the Board of Education for students who, because
of illness, must be absent from school for extended periods of time. Arrangements forsuch instruction can be made after consultation with the principal of the school.
REPORTING TO PARENTSProgress reports are issued in the middle of each marking period.Report cards are issued four times per year (see calendar for specific dates).Parent/Teacher conferences are conducted once a year. Parents will be contacted
and appointments scheduled. Evening conferences will be announced.Parents are always welcome and are urged to come to school to consult with the
principal and teachers regarding their child’s progress. Parents are asked to call theschool and make an appointment in advance of their visit.
SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICESThe Hasbrouck Heights School System is pleased to continue an ambitious Health
Screening Program. The purpose is to identify potential health problems. Informationor concerns should be shared with the school nurse. All communication will be held instrict confidence.
All new students and those in 3rd, 7th and 10th grades are required to have aphysical examination. All athletes and cheerleaders are required to have a physicalexamination yearly for participation in the activity of their choice.
Height, weight, and vision screenings are provided at all grade levels. Audiometricscreening is also provided at 1st, 4th, 8th and 10th grades as the need arises. Scoliosisscreening is provided in 5th-12th grades.
Nurses or other designated personnel will administer first aid in cases of injury.Parents are notified if injury is serious.
State guidelines for T.B. screening require that students from out of county, out ofstate or in certain towns/grades in New Jersey be Mantoux (T.B.) tested.
All newly hired employees must be Mantoux tested and have a physical examination.Immunization against Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccination must have been
administered after the first birthday. In cases of Chicken Pox or other similar diseases,the students must remain at home until lesions are healed and dry.
According to Board Policy, the administration of prescribed medication to a studentduring school hours will be permitted only when failure to take such medication wouldjeopardize the health of the student or the student would not be able to attend schoolif the medicine was not made available during school hours. Nurses will providenecessary forms for physician and parent documentation. medication may beadministered by the school nurse or parent (guardian) ONLY.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONChildren who cannot attend regular classes in the public school may attend a
special class or special school which provides for their individual needs. Arrangementsfor such instruction may be made after consultation with the principal of the individualschool.
KINDERGARTEN ENTRANCETo be admitted to kindergarten, a child must be five years of age by October 1st of
the current year.Registration of kindergarten children is held in the spring with the late registration
on the day school opens in September. Parents of each entering student must presenta copy of the child’s birth certificate, the record of contagious diseases, and dates ofvaccination, inoculations, and immunizations. D.P.T. and polio vaccinations must begiven after the child’s fourth birthday. A physical and dental examination is alsonecessary. Immunization must be presented before or on the first day of school. Thosenot in compliance will not be able to attend until the regulations are met.
COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONSApplications for these exams are available from the Guidance Office and should

INSURANCEThe Board of Education provides an insurance policy for all children in kindergarten
through grade 12. This policy covers pupils while in school and on the way to and fromschool.
WORKING PAPERSAnyone under eighteen years of age will require working papers for all types of
jobs. Working papers are issued through the school. The prospective employer must fillout a form telling the kind of work the student will be doing and the number of hours hewill be working. The student must also be examined by the school doctor. If the medicalexamination is satisfactory, the school issues the papers.
Working papers may be secured from the secretary in the guidance office of thehigh school from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. while school is in session and from 9:00 a.m. to3:00 p.m. during July and August.
