We have once again achieved 100% graduation and 100% attainment whereby all students achieved at least one Certificate II. Our students had the benefit of choosing from a wide range of vocational and training courses and have made the most of the opportunities. 24% of our Year 12 students achieved Cert III and IV courses and 41% achieved 2 or more Certificates. This is steadily increasing each year. We are currently exploring alternative entries into University. Each university has differing requirements. For example, Murdoch University website states that a Cert III or IV with an A or B grade in General English and a D or better in ATAR English could qualify for entry into their OnTrack course. Some new additions to our courses this year include ELITE SPORTS in Year 9 (also in Year 10) and the introduction of MUSIC into the lower school curriculum. We have continued to offer the Cert II in Outdoor Recreation which proved popular in its first year in 2018. Save our P&C!

Calling all new and existing families of Harvey Senior High School and all interested community members.

Our school desperately needs a new committee if we are hoping to continue to support our school community and our children’s education. All positions are considered vacant and need your support to continue this legacy.

The first meeting will be held on Tuesday 26 February, 5.30pm at the school in B2.

Please contact the Secretary, Gaylene Shales to register your interest at [email protected] or by mobile on 0428830597. If you want to see the P&C continue to support our local High School you need to talk with your feet and come along to find out how you can make a difference to your school.

Valentine’s Day Fundraiser On Thursday 14 February the student councillors had their first fundraising event.

Students raised over $108 by wearing RED for the day. All participants received a chocolate heart and a choice of red velvet biscuit (baked by Rachel Millichamp), flocked heart or heart (felt) sticker.

The event was well received and all monies went to the Heart Foundation that fund lifesaving heart research, and work to improve heart disease prevention and care for all Australians.

Thank you to all students and staff whom participated.

Teaching and Learning at Harvey OLNA Support – In preparation for the On-line Literacy and Numeracy Assessment the school have purchased log-ins for a number of Year 10 and 11 students to familiarise themselves with the format of OLNA. Mrs Dyson is also availing herself before and after school for students to have the best possible opportunity to pass this assessment. Access to OLNA support will become available to more students after the results from Round One have been received.

Australian Geography Competition – The school has identified a number of students to participate in this annual event. Based on their academic status Mrs Dyson has invited students to enter The Australian Geography Competition. This competition is a contest for Australian secondary school students, assessing their geographical knowledge and skills. The competition aims to encourage student interest in geography and to reward student excellence. This will be held at a date to be advised between; 27 March and 10 April.

Between the Lines – Harvey Senior High School’s most successful literary students will be receiving an invitation to attend a writer’s workshop in Busselton on 28 March. Students will complete workshops by acclaimed author Matt Ottley. Our Year 9 students are currently studying his picture book Home and Away. This is an opportunity for our young writers to access creative writing practice from experts. I look forward to sharing with you their experience in our next newsletter.

Lower School Engagement Program Beginning in 2019, our Lower School Engagement Program caters exclusively for students with specific learning challenges and our class-room is based upon the principles of: Inclusivity Safety through structured risk taking Team work Explicit instruction Cooperative learning Our aim is to ensure smooth transition pathways, including into mainstream classrooms, our Senior School Engagement Program or potentially into the workforce. Our timetable differs from a mainstream timetable in that our mornings are designed to have a high level of routine so as to make students feel welcome and safe. Our mornings have a focus on ensuring literacy and numeracy supports. Our Literacy and Numeracy programs have been designed to assist students struggling with the demands of the mainstream and have strong components and links to learning in context with a high engagement factor. Our afternoons have emphasis on team building, social and life skills, physical activity, and building identity.

The Year begins…..

During the first few weeks at SSEP we have been focusing on teamwork and building positive relationships with others.

Students have commented that they are enjoy-ing “learning new life skills”, “cooperating with others that they didn’t know” and “learning in a different way”.

Some students have thought outside the box and used inventive strategies in group challenges. Great use of the new oven to make birthday cakes!

Congratulations to those that have started their Traineeships and TAFE courses.

A huge “thank you” from SSEP to Mrs Isis Ballares for donating an exercise bike and treadmill for our Physical Fitness program.

From the 15 to 17 January, while other students enjoyed a relaxing holiday break, Roisin Schofield and I had the unique opportunity to attend the ConocoPhillips Science Experience at The University of Western Australia. We had the chance to explore the campus, listen to interesting lectures and meet many new people. We also participated in many hands-on workshops in the laboratories, and see epic demonstrations of science in action including watching levitating magnets using liquid nitrogen. I thoroughly recommend it to other adventurous Year 9 students in 2019 and would like to thank Aspire WA for providing the scholarship.

Senior School Conference The Senior School Conference took place on Monday 11 February, in conjunction with Aspire UWA and guest presenter, Mike Bormann.

Mike’s sessions were interactive and engaging while delivering some powerful messages about life-long learning and growth. Students participated in a range of team activities challenges that focused on surviving through Year 11, 12 and beyond.

Students were involved in five sessions throughout the day including getting prepared and organised (making timetables, setting goals, analysing and interpreting assessment outlines), team building activities and competitive wind-up games.

Feedback indicated that over 80% of students enjoyed the day with most enjoying the Mike Bormann activities and, of course, the free sausage sizzle.

A huge thank you to Jodi, Sharon S, Bronwen, Mike and staff who supported the sessions, Stophy, David, Yr 10 student councillors and all Year 11 and 12 students involved.

Sexual Health Day

On Friday 15 February the Year 9 students participated in Sexual Health Week, and the theme this year was “Ask

First - Communicate, Negotiate”.

The students were given brief 30 minutes educational sessions during periods 1 and 2 with some great agencies coming to the school - Public Health Unit, Inclusive Education and Waratah. The students were involved in fun activities and given information regarding Gender inclusivity, Consent and Protecting yourself from Infections and some Basketball in between with SS Manager.

The feedback from students was really positive and of the responses received from students, 80% of the students rated sessions 4/5 with 5 being strongly agree to the following questions:

The workshop was fun The workshop was informative I am likely to find more information I feel comfortable getting help I know more about sexual health This session helped me make good

sexual health decisions.

Thank you to everyone that helped make this day successful.

Louise McDonald, Community Health Nurse

On a very hot day, Tuesday 19 February, the student council for 2019 were invited to attend a one day excursion to Mornington Adventure Camp. This allowed us to celebrate their selection and provide an opportunity for students to create a cohesive working committee.

The programme consisted of low rope challenges and obstacle courses. The students participated with enthusiasm and cleared every challenge with vigour. They were commended by the guide Chloe who said “they completed all challenges speedily through communication and support.” Most students enjoyed the “Mohawk” and “spider-web” challenges. It was also great to see other students take on personal trials by climbing the 2m high wall and letting go with the flying fox. We then engaged in a planning session, in an air conditioned room, to determine activities for the year.

It was great to see students become more vocal and communicate more freely as the day progressed and to see happy faces during the team building activities.

A huge thank you to Jodi Dyson for driving and Mornington Camp for the use of their facilities.

Well done to Sarah Oberthur (School Captain) Joshua Lavis (School Captain), Nadia Davis, Conrad Chester, Monique Ellis, William Barron, Brylin Bonner, Ella Morgan, Joel Downey-Barnes, Trinity Bateup, Anastasia Tupou, Lincoln Lawson, Tyson Baggetta and Ty Guretti for your selection to the 2019 Student Council.
