Collection Description

Biographical NoteHarvey E. Klehr (1933- ) is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Politics and History at EmoryUniversity. He was born on December 25, 1945 in Newark, New Jersey. He received hisundergraduate degree from Franklin and Marshall College in 1967, and obtained a Ph.D. fromthe University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971. Klehr has written over a dozen books onthe history of American communism and Soviet espionage in the United States.

Scope and Content NoteThe collection consists of research files accumulated by Harvey Klehr relating to Americancommunism and Soviet espionage in the United States. The files include printed materials,Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) files, materials relating to the 1979 Greensboro (N.C.)Massacre, collected research files, and unprocessed additions. Printed material includes selectedradical periodicals, books and pamphlets accumulated by Klehr during his research. TheFBI files, released under the terms of FOIA, concern organizations, topics, and individualsassociated with American Communism. The Greensboro, North Carolina files relate to Waltersvs. Butkovich, United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina, 1984.The unprocessed additions include oral history interviews with Oliver Carlson and CharlesTaylor; photocopies of early files of the Communist Party of the United States of Americaincluding letters, minutes, and reports from 1921-1922; "most secret" communications betweenCommunists Party operatives from 1934-1937; Russian archives materials; photocopies ofscholarly articles on communism in the United States of America, as well as Soviet espionage;subject files on individuals involved in the Amerasia Affair; collected materials on the
