Curwen Primary School

continues to deliver a gold standard education having

been recognised with the Primary Geography Quality

Mark, Leading Parent Partnership

Award, International School Award and TfL STARS Award.

Paul Harris, Chief Executive of The Tapscott Learning Trust, said: “We

are delighted to have been awarded these awards as they show

how much work we at Curwen do to

ensure that children receive a broad and balanced curriculum. It

is important to focus on developing the whole child working as a team

with parents and local and wider

community partners. It supports children and their understanding in

modern Britain and their place within it. The awards also show the

hard work and commitment of all involved to work with our

communities to engage and develop

the way we work to meet the needs of all. We are very proud of these

achievements and look forward to continuing to provide an excellent

education for our children.”

Jeanne Le Bars, the Leading Parent Partnership Award (LPPA) award

verifier, said: “Curwen is a model of excellent practice in terms of the

development and embedding of

effective partnership with parents and carers.”

The LPPA is a set of benchmarks used to judge how well the school

involves and engages parents and carers with their child’s learning.

John Potter, Curwen Assistant Head

Teacher leading with LPPA, said: “For a long time the relationship

between school and home has been at the heart of Curwen’s successes

and we felt that it was important to

celebrate this in the form of Leading Parent Partnership Award.”

The school and home relationship has also secured Curwen’s standing

as a TfL STARS gold-award school, having first attained this status in

2012. Curwen is amongst the top

10% of London schools setting high standards to inspire pupils to

transform travel habits. The school

has seen a marked reduction in the

number of journeys made by cars every day, fully engaging the wider

community to promote best practices.

Swasthi Mahabeer, the School

Travel Plan Champion, said: “With the school growing over the 10

years we have been taking part in the hands up survey with TfL.

Active travel in 2007 was 85% for a pupil roll of just 289. In 2010 active

travel dropped by 10% with public

travel rising to 12% for a roll of 435 pupils. This year, with the roll now

of 914 children, the combined active travel and public travel has

risen to 93% with cars making up

the remaining percentage. The benefits arising from this show that

the school is well placed within easy access of a public transportation

network for both pupils and staff. With the school being deemed

outstanding by OFSTED and having

continued academic success, it is a much sought after place to come to

learn. The challenges Curwen continue to face is the congestion

around the school with the school

being in a cul-de-sac, with an increasing car usage by the public

yet town planning and the school car park remaining the same.”

Curwen Primary has been

reaccredited the International School Award by the British

Council. Sir Ciarán Devane, CEO of the British Council, said: “The

school’s fantastic international work has rightfully earned it this prestigious

award. The International School Award

is a great chance for schools to demonstrate the important work

they’re doing to bring the world into their classrooms. Embedding

an international dimension in

children’s education ensures that they are truly global citizens and

helps prepare them for successful lives and careers in an increasingly

global economy.”

Montse Tome, Curwen International

Award lead, said: “The award

reflects the work that we do to celebrate our rich diversity. With

our pupils speaking over 100 languages and their heritage

coming from over 50 countries

around the world, we are representative of Newham. Events

such as the International Week, and making strong links with a

school in Spain have empowered

our pupils to be more in touch with the culture, language and

understanding of the wider world.”

Th i s com m i tm en t t o t he

international education of pupils was part of Curwen’s success in the

Primary Geography Quality Mark.

Curwen is one of only eight schools to achieve the Gold level in 2017.

Alan Kinder, Geography Association Chief Executive, said: “There has

never been a more important time

for all children and young people to study geography. Growing up in the

21st century means living in an increasingly interconnected world

and facing a growing number of global challenges, such as climate

change and the need to live our

lives sustainably. Geography is, as we say in the Geography

A s s o c i a t i o n ’ s M a n i f e s t o , ‘fundamental to everyone’ and I am

delighted that Curwen Primary

School is teaching their students to fully engage with the subject.”

Emma White, Assistant Head Teacher at Curwen Primary School,

who led the PGQM application said:

“We are delighted that Curwen Pr imary Schoo l has been

highlighted as ‘leading the way in providing excellent and innovative

geography’. Our vis ion for geography at Curwen is to inspire a

sense of awe and wonder and

enable children to make sense of a continually changing world. Through

our engaging, creative and inspiring Geography Curriculum, our children

develop an understanding and a

deeper connection with their local environment, learn about the

interconnected nature of people and their world and consider the

challenges that we will all face in future. This approach equips

children with the tools needed to

embrace the challenges of lifelong learning and the confidence and

drive to succeed throughout their lives.”

Working at heights The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require employers

to ensure that a sufficient risk assessment is carried out so that all potential work at height risks are effectively

identified, controlled and managed.

Work at height means work in any place where, if precautions were not taken, a person could fall a

distance liable to cause personal injury. You are working at height if you:

work above ground/floor level

could fall from an edge, through an opening or fragile

surface or

could fall from ground level into an opening in a floor

or a hole in the ground

Schools must also ensure that employees are appropriately

trained to ensure that they can carry out their work safely. This also includes ensuring that other staff are

supervised by somebody competent to work at heights.

This new NPW Working at Height training course will assist you in complying with the Work at Height

Regulations 2005 by providing the necessary information needed to be able to successfully deal with working at

height risks and control measures. This includes an

understanding of how to undertake a working at height risk assessment, how to use and access the appropriate

equipment safely and how to ensure that employees can reduce their risk of falls from height.
