Our goal was to reduce those numbers by at least 3% this year. (Our hope is that we will actually reduce them by far more!). Notes from Ms. Taylor

Congratulations and thank you to our wonderful Hartley Volunteers

of the Year! Mrs. Clara Gardner (senior division), Mrs. Jan

Anderson(adult), and Miss Alyssa Moxon (youth) were nominated to

represent our school at the District’s Volunteer of the Year Banquet

last Thursday because of the countless hours of time and energy they

have given to assist students and staff at our school. Volunteer

Coordinator Annmarie Darcy was also recognized for her tireless

service to our school. Because of her, Hartley consistently earns the

Five Star School Award because of our strong volunteer and parent

involvement record. There is simply no way Hartley could be as

successful as we are without the contributions of all of our hard

working volunteers. Thanks to you all.

And now…..we need everyone’s support in helping us to reach two

of our important School Improvement Plan goals for this year. Last

year, over 150 students missed 10 days of school or more, and we

also logged over 100 who were tardy at least 10 times, and that was

alarming. Our goal was to reduce those numbers by at least 3% this

year. (Our hope is that we will actually reduce them by far more!).

With less than nine weeks left in the school year, we are doing

better, however we’ve begun to see our numbers creep back up

toward the “danger zone”. I cannot stress enough how critical it is

for students to be in class, on time, every day in order for them to

have every opportunity to be successful in class. Computer

generated letters will remind parents if their students have

accumulated five, ten or 15 unexcused absences. At fifteen, the

District Office files a report with the court system. Please help us

reduce these costly mail outs and help us reach our SIP goals by

insuring your child is in school on time every day. Thank you!

SUMMER MARINE SCIENCE PROGRAM

Parents,

Applications for the summer Marine Science Program

will be passed out at all schools during the week of

February 25th. Applications are due back to science

teachers by March 7th. Applications can also be

downloaded at any time from the website prior to

April 15th at http://www-grms.stjohns.k12.fl.us/ and

click on the Marine Science link.

This summer program is available to all students in

grades five through seven and has been sponsored by

the school district since 1982. Three eight day

sessions are held at Menendez High School with bus

transportation provided. The dates for the three

sessions this summer will be June 10th through June

20th, June 24th, through July 11th, and July 15th through

July 25th. (The school district will be closed during

the week of July 1st through 4th.) Small classes that

average 14 students are separated by grade level. All

instructors in the program are St. Johns County

School District teachers.

The Marine Science Program is a carefully designed

experience for responsible students who are

interested in learning about our local marine

environments. Learning is “hands on” in the field

with students kayaking, canoeing, boating, hiking,

snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, etc. Specific

grade level activities and curriculum are attached to

the applications and are also available from the

website.

More information about the program can be had by

emailing John Gordon at [email protected] .

ESE SURVEY

The Florida Department of Education is conducting a survey designed to provide the state with information on how well schools are supporting parents’ involvement in their child’s education. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), states must report this information to the federal government on an annual basis. All parents of children with disabilities and a current IEP (PK to 12th grade) are invited to participate in this survey. The survey is opened from February 1, 2013 to June 30, 2013. Please visit www.esesurvey.com to complete the survey.
