Notes from Principal Taylor
Dear Hawk Families,
Thank you to all our volunteers and business partners who came out on Thursday to our volunteer breakfast and training. I look
forward to seeing all of you in our classrooms this year. Hartley is being recognized at the School Board meeting tomorrow for
having earned the Five Star Award for the 15th year and the Golden School Award for the 21st time!! These awards celebrate the
thousands of hours given by volunteers in our school every year as well as the contributions and support of our business
partners. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for everything you do for our teachers and students every day!
Thank you also to all our families who came out in force for our open house Thursday night. Thank you teachers for working
late that night and preparing your classrooms for the event, and finally, thanks to everyone for your continued patience with our limited parking. I appreciate all those who parked in the back field, as requested, in order to keep cars off our neighbor’s
lawns!
Please note that the District has determined the date for our hurricane makeup day to be on Monday, October 17th. This
originally was scheduled as a teacher planning day, so make sure you’ve recorded that change. Because teachers will no longer
have this day free to work on report cards, the District may be postponing the date for first quarter grades to be released by a
few days.
And now for a few gentle reminders:
Please, please do not use your cell phones in the parent pick up or drop off line. We are increasingly frustrated and
concerned by the lack of attention due to cell phone distractions during this critically busy time and place. Our number one goal is keeping our kids safe, but we need your cooperation with this request in order to do this.
If you think your child qualifies for free or reduced breakfasts/lunches, you must fill out the form (on our website under “Helpful Links/school lunches”) every year in order for your child to receive eligibility.
You will not be able to enter the school building to eat lunch with your child, attend awards ceremonies, chaperone, volunteer or visit a classroom unless you have completed a volunteer registration form (on the Hartley website or in person
at Hartley) and been cleared as a volunteer in advance of the activity you plan to attend. This process can take up to six weeks, so make sure you register now. If you’re not certain about whether you have been cleared, call Helen Hagan at 547-8400. You must also show your driver’s license when you sign in. This is District policy and is critical to assuring our school’s safety.
Thank you!
Hurricane Make-Up Day Monday, October 17, 2016
October 17th was originally a planning day for the teachers, but St. Johns County Schools will be using this day as our hurricane make-up day for students. Please make this change on your calendars. This will be a regular school day from 8:30 AM -2:50 PM. Since we are using teacher planning day for the make-up day, the report card date may be adjusted.
Hartley Visitors: If you would like to visit your child at school during lunch, attend a field trip, and/or volunteer at school, please
fill out the volunteer application on the following website:
https://knt3.keepntrack.com/HTML/KnTOnlineVolunteerApplication.html?db=stjohns&version=3.16.1-
20160701
You must be an approved volunteer to come into school and do any of the above fun things at Hartley. Once your
application has been cleared through the school district and the St. Johns County Sherriff’s office, it will be valid
for three years. You will not need to fill out another application in the future, just let us know you need to be
renewed. Your volunteer status, once cleared, will allow you to sign in at all St. Johns County Schools.
Please do not check your child out early from school, or call after 2:00 PM (1:00 PM on Wednesday) to change the way your child goes home (EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY).
Thank you very much for your cooperation. Mrs. Helen

Notes from Nurse Rosemary
If your children become ill, please do
not send them to school until they have
been fever free for 24 hours without the
aid of Tylenol or Advil-type products.
Together we can keep Hartley healthy.
Occasionally students may need to
borrow clothes from the clinic. If this is
the case with you child, please launder
and return these items as soon as
possible.

After School Questions
Asking “How was school today?”
might not get you far. Instead, ask
questions like these for a better
picture of your youngster’s day:
“What’s the coolest thing that happened today?” What
wasn’t cool?”
“Pretend you’re the teacher. How would you describe the
day?”
“What made you laugh?”
“What was the most creative thing you did?”
How were you kind or helpful today? Was anyone
kind or helpful to you?

Dear Hartley Parents,
I am very pleased to announce that we will be starting an afterschool club to explore Minecraft, the
popular “sandbox” gaming environment. This club will allow participating students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades
to learn how to craft all kinds of materials throughout the Minecraft world and build things together as a
team, while safely immersed in our school’s private server.
Details:
The club will run on Wednesday afternoons from 1:50 to 3:15pm. Transportation is not provided.
Parents need to pick students up promptly at 3:15pm at parent pick-up. Failure to pick your child
up on time could result in him/her being withdrawn from the club.
We expect students to abide by our students handbook’s policies for behavior and Internet use.
Please notify the school if your child will not be at a club meeting.
We have room for 25 students in the club. We will accept students in the order in which
permission slips are turned in.
There is a $20.00 fee for joining the club, which covers the cost of our personal, secure Minecraft
Edu sever and individual licenses. Make checks payable to Hartley Elementary.
General Information: To see short introduction videos/trailers about Minecraft and learn more about
Minecraft Edu’s special mission in the field of education, please visit
htt://services.minecraftedu.com/wiki/What_is_MinecraftEdu
Requirements: Students do not need to have any experience with Minecraft, but experienced students are
more that welcome to join our club: they will even serve as student helpers since my own experience with
Minecraft is limited.
Further Information: Please feel free to contact me, Stephanie Hudson, with and additional questions. My
email is [email protected] and I can also be reached at the school at 904-547-8400.
The club will meet the following dates, which are all Wednesdays:
October 5, 12 and 19 & November 2, 9, and 16
Please cut the bottom portion of the paper off and return to Mrs. Hudson at school.
