In appreciation of Harmony’s Veteran’s Day Assembly and Reception: ♦ “Loved seeing all the flags around Harmony today. Thank you for remembering America’s veterans.” ♦ “I wanted to drop a note that I really enjoyed the Veteran’s Day event at Harmony. Your students represented themselves well and the chorus sounded great. I can’t believe that was their first time performing as a group.” ♦ “The Veteran’s Day presentation was splendid! The kids enjoyed it too. The SCA did a great job. Thanks for making that hour so memorably worthy!” ♦ “I just wanted to take a moment and thank you all for having a great Veteran’s Day Assembly. This was such a good lesson for our students teaching them about service, honor and sacrifice for our country. Great Job.” Thank you to long-term substitute, Ms. Raffensperger:

♦ “I just wanted to take a quick moment to tell you how impressed I am with Donna Raffensperger as a long

term math subs:tute. My son, (x), is in her 6th grade math class. I was very pleased with Mrs. Farrey at back

-to-school-night, so I was so saddened to hear her news, and a liCle concerned about having a long term sub,

par:cularly in math. However, Mrs. Raffensperger has gone above and beyond. My son has been quite ill

for the past few days, and Mrs. Raffensperger sent a packet of work home with one of his friends. However,

it was forgoCen in a locker on Friday aDernoon, so not only did Mrs. Raffensperger get the email I sent her

on Friday night, but she also took the :me to scan everything in and send it to me. In addi:on, she has

offered her services both before and aDer school, and even gave me her cell phone number in case (my son)

has any trouble with the work. I have never had a subs:tute do any of that before.”

Congratulations to the following art students who currently have artwork on display at the Loudoun County Public Schools Administration Office Building in Ashburn. The art show is an exhibition representing recent student work by the 6th, 7th

and 8th grade students at Harmony Middle School.

The artwork will be on display October 28, 2014 through January 30, 2015. Artwork is located in the hallway of the second floor or in the Department to Planning and Legislative Services office Suite 220 (2nd floor) of the Administration Office Build-ing. The office is located at 21000 Education Court, Ashburn, VA 20148. The doors are open from 8:00 am until 5:30 pm

weekdays. Stop and check out our student artists’ work!

BOOK CLUBS Harmony’s 6th and 7th Grade Book Clubs are off to a great start! November’s meetings featured virtu-

al visits to the war-torn countryside of the Congo through discussions of Endangered and some exciting

experiences at the “Academy of Scholastic Distinction” through discussions of Ungifted.

The December book discussion and meeting dates are:

6th Grade: How They Croaked (VRC) –December 16th

7th Grade: One for the Murphys (VRC) and Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie –December 18th

*VRC=Virginia Reader’s Choice-Students must read a minimum of 4 of the 10 nominated books this

year to be eligible voters for this program in the spring ☺

Battle of the Books applications have been distributed and collected from all interested 7th and 8th grade

students. Students are required to read at least 4 of the 5 books for the regional competition, which will

take place after school on Thursday, April 23rd. The titles are: Legend by Marie Lu, Because of Mr.

Terupt by Rob Buyea, Trash by Andy Mulligan, Lincoln’s Grave Robbers by Steve Sheinkin, and Out of

My Mind by Sharon Draper. Let the battle begin!

CITING SOURCES Why do I have to give credit to my sources of information when I do research? If you or your child

has ever asked this question, here is how we explain it in the Library: “When you use someone else's

words or original ideas in a research assignment, you must give that person credit for their work. Other-

wise, YOU are taking credit for someone else's work and this is not ethical! At the end of your paper,

you must provide a ‘Works Cited’ list of all the books, encyclopedia articles, online databases, or web-

sites used in your research. The goal is to provide enough information so that the reader of your paper

Throughout the month of November, our school-wide PBIS focus was on the letter “H” in our Hornet Habits matrix, “RESPECT”. Students who

demonstrated behaviors above and beyond the matrix expectations were rewarded with our new Hornet High Flier tickets! These tickets are

deposited into grade level buckets in the Library, making these students eligible to spin the prize wheel to represent their grade level on

December 1st. Students wonder, “What surprises will be on the prize wheel???”

Mark your calendars for our exciting “Quest for Respect” assembly for

all students coming on December 2nd!
