What can you do During Test Administration?

Active Monitoring! This means ensuring a Test Administrator (TA) moves about the classroom and principal(s), hall monitors, and campus coordinator(s) monitor test areas. (There is no internet, TAC use, grading student work, and reading the newspaper). Including hall monitors

Students will not be permitted to alter their answer documents after turning in their materials and/or leaving the testing room.

• Make sure students check for any stray marks on their answer documents. Once picked up, the answer document is completed.

• Monitor students for stray marks on their demographics area of the answer document

• Prepare a seating chart for your testing room.  This will be documentation verifying that the students actually tested in your classroom.  We need to document if a student was absent during testing. 

• Make sure all students have been given a chance to use the restroom before testing begins.

• 7th grade writing testing – Please prepare your classroom with dictionaries and thesauruses.  At least 1 per 5 students.

• Require use of No. 2 pencils

• Students who have finished testing and who remain in the room may read an AR book

• A trained test administrator must be present at all times – Do not leave a testing room unsupervised during testing

• Carefully monitor all restroom breaks according to the manual

• Wait until announcements have been made to begin testing.

• Bulletin boards and instructional displays that might aid students during testing must be covered or removed (please address this no later than the day before the exam.)

• Testing rooms should be well lighted, well ventilated.

• NO CELL PHONES or electronic devices are allowed:– Do not have your cell phone on your desk or hip-belt buckle area.  – Send students to front office for non-disciplinary holding or place in the

student’s locker. – DO NOT hold the phone in the class room for the student. It may

automatically turn on.

• Lunch – students must remain together as a group and be closely monitored by a trained test administrator to ensure that they do not discuss the contents of the test.  (Please discuss the lunch process with your hall monitor. We recommend limiting student conversation to a minimum in order to prevent any possible discussion about the test. 

• Students may not be directed to answer in the book first and fill in answer documents later.

• No testing strategies on testing day. • No Music allowed during testing

• Students place answer documents in the test booklet.

• Wait patiently for five minutes in classroom

• If possible collect test booklets and answer documents

• After 5 minutes, quietly ask students to walk outside and sit in the hallway – no talking about the test.

• Return when light goes back on OR wait for hall monitor instructions

• Continue testing if possible or students place answer documents in the test booklet.

Reference Materials for Mathematics and Science

• Consists of formulas, constants, conversions, periodic table, etc.

• Are used for grades 3–8 mathematics, grade 8 science, Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II, chemistry, and physics

• Are not used for grade 5 science or biology • Will be embedded in the paper test booklets and perforated so students can tear them out

• Will be embedded in online tests as a pop-up window

• May be printed from the TEA website and distributed to students to use during paper and online testing

Work Space for Mathematics and Science

• Paper tests will have blank space around test questions for students

to make notes and perform calculations.

• Online tests will have new tools for making notes and performing calculations.

• Math tests will have graph paper embedded in the paper test booklets and perforated so students can tear it out.

• Online math tests will have a new pop-up window of graph paper.

• Campuses may print copies of the graph paper from the TEA website

and distribute to students to use during paper and online testing.23

Calculators for Mathematics and Science

• A graphing calculator must be provided to each student taking the Algebra I, geometry, and Algebra II assessments.

• A scientific or graphing calculator must be provided to each student taking the chemistry and physics assessments.

• A calculator must be available for every five students taking the biology assessment.

• Will be embedded in online math tests as a pop-up window

• A calculator must not be provided to students taking the grades 3–8 assessments unless eligibility criteria for an accommodation is met.

Checklist for Significant Changes

The only results we will know in June will be the STAAR EOCs and STAAR L EOCS. We will receive raw score reports in June. We are still required to report these results to parents.

No results for SSI placement, other relevant academic information should be used to make promotion/detention decisions.

STAAR Spanish is available for ELLs in grades 3-5 who meet the specific participation requirements. ELLs not eligible for STAAR L or STAAR Spanish may be provided allowed linguistic accommodations on STAAR.

Four hour time limit. Testing will end at the close of a regular school day (exception for campuses testing more than one session). Do we want to have lunch break during the four hour time limit?

Checklist for Significant Changes

Make-ups are available for all grades, all subjects, and courses. Available for all administrations.

Third grade students will record answers on separate answer documents.

STAAR Administrative Manuals-Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and EOC. Campuses will keep manuals.

Techs must sign Technology Oath.

For writing: 4th grade will administer ½ of multiple choice items and first prompt on Day 1 and Day 2 second half of multiple choice and second prompt.

For writing : 7th grade will administer all the multiple choice and first composition on Day 1. Day 2 second and third composition.

Checklist for Significant Changes

For English I, II, and III STAAR EOC assessments: Writing Component administered Day 1 and Reading Component Day 2. Scores reported separately for reading and writing. These tests will be the most challenging having 3 compositions in one day and short answers.

New dictionary policy (see handout). Only 26 lines to the page. Test takers cannot double line. Will not score anything beyond the 26 lines. Short answer will have 9 lines and students an write below line 9 to be equivalent to 10 lines.

For math and science, tests will have blank space around test questions to make notes and perform calculations. Students can request scratch paper. Must be destroyed after testing. Graph paper will be embedded in the paper test booklets and perforated so students can tear it out.

Checklist for Significant Changes

A graphing calculator must be provided to each student taking the math EOCs.

A scientific or graphing calculator must be provided to each student taking the chemistry and physics assessments.

A calculator must be available for every five students taking the Biology EOC.

For on-line testing, calculator will be embedded as a pop-up window. It is suggested that the student also have a hand held calculator.

No calculators for grades 3-8 unless eligibility criteria is met for an accommodation. This is not counting Algebra I at 8th grade.
